MKDasher's Comments

Yay, done at last! I didn't start TASing this game that long ago, so I have the least experience, but I really want to thank the rest of the team for letting me join and participate in this great project. It's been a really nice experience for me and I'm hoping that everyone enjoys watching the run as much as we did making it!

Nahoc's Comments

Yo, yo, yo! I must say, like Jeremiah and David, I'm really happy to finally see this completed run in the workbench. I had a blast TASing this awesome game with such awesome people.
I'd like to point out that a big part of this project was done by the Japanese TASers. When they were working on the "120 Stars" TAS, they used to go back a lot to redo and improve earlier stars, since they were working on a "perfect" TAS. We (sonicpacker and myself) got tired of being left aside the project, seeing how slow the progress on it was and decided to go along and do our own TAS. MKDasher later joined us. Not gonna lie, we used a lot of their inputs during the making of this movie (but always with permissions) and "quickly" finished the masterpiece that you're about to watch. Of course, some improvements were found during the 3-month period we worked on the project, but it's nothing too big.
We would like to thank all the Japanese SM64 TASers for their hard work and hope they will be able to improve this movie with a more "perfect" v2. Good luck guys!

sonicpacker's Comments

Well it's about damn time. No, but really, working with the community towards finishing this run has given me the best time of my life and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my teenage years. I've met so many awesome people and have had the best partners to work with. I'm thankful beyond words and I hope everyone that watches the TAS has a great time! I could go on and write a book about it, but I'll let the run speak for itself. And remember, SM64 isn't even near dead. Stay tuned, haha!

Known Improvements

Of course, in every long TAS, even with the highest standards and level of optimization, nothing is ever perfect. Here's a list of the known improvements. Most were discovered when we were already too far into the run to go back. They will be included in a new version made by a different team of TASers.
[dead image link removed]
  • CCM:
    • About 18 frames can be saved on "Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins".
    • 3 frames lost on "Li'l Penguin Lost".
    • 1 VI/s is savable during the "100 Coins" star.
  • BoB:
    • About 1 second can be saved on the "100 Coins" star with better coins manipulation.
  • WF:
    • "Chip Off Whomp's Block" is improvable by 3 frames.
    • "To the Top of the Fortress" is improvable by 7 frames.
    • 2 frames lost on the "100 Coins" star due to luck manipulation.
  • DDD:
    • 0"30 seconds lost due to random lag.
    • Extra frame lost for better lag manipulation.
  • LLL:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.
  • HMC:
  • BBH:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.

First of all, congratulations on finally finishing this tremendous and monstrous project. I had a huge blast watching this. Thank you all for your inspiring determination to get this run done after all the resets and whatnot. I'd like to point out a few things: 1) If there is anything I think you could slightly criticize this run for is its camera handling. Sometimes the camera was too close to Mario's body to fully enjoy some stars. 2) My favorite star was 75/76. The way you totally butt fucked that turtle was hilarious.. Holy shit man, that was truly a funny and kickass moment :) 3) There is no question at all (for me at least), this run deserves a star. 4) Now that you guys are done with this wonderful run, I recommend focusing on Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2. I think it's time to move on to another 3D mario run. Dolphin is ready for it. I hope at least you discuss it with yourselves.

TAS of the year ^_^
Not that this movie isn't very impressive, astronomical to take on, and overall amazing... But if another SM64 gets TAS of the year/an award like N64 tas of the year or something, I'm going to lose faith in aiming about branching to more games instead of just the favorites (Zelda, Mario, and the like). Overall though, obviously a yes :p

Absolutely incredible. I never thought that the Big House In The Sky star could ever be done without the carpet, so that was pretty mind-blowing to see. I also loved the flying in Bomb-Omb Battlefield, and Shell Mario is awesome. My favorite ideas for a screenshot would involve either Shell Mario or the spawning Moneybags. There's a lot of good stuff in there though. Congratulations!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

How hyped were we? PRETTY HYPED! Was the hype worth it? HELL YEAH! Obvious TAS of the year, or the decade even. Too many good moments, Filimonas pointed them all out. This was amazingly mind-blowing. Thanks a lot for this run.

I'll try and get a decent recording of a console verification. I am aware I don't have any top-notch recording equipment but I'll do what I can. I won't be able to getting it verified until tomorrow night (have to rebuild my device)
Could you please time the run on console as accurately as you can? I'd like to be able to compare it with realtime runs, and don't trust Mupen to calculate the time correctly.

I just watched getting 5 stars and voted yes. Judging from numerous efforts all TASer have made, I'm sure this deserves to get published. Although it will take over an hour to watch the whole run, I'm not going to miss every moment of this glorious movie.

I expected this to be absolutely amazing, and it was, but I was still blown away by the speed of Mario Wings to the Sky, the strategy of Can the Eel Come Out to Play?, and the genius route for Mystery of the Monkey Cage. Definitely Star material. Not sure about TAS of the year though (Pokémon might deserve it more). YES vote though, and thanks for the beautiful HD encode!

No emulator is ever going to give you the exact timing on a console because of the differing frame rates. Mupen calculates frames at 60FPS, while a console does 59.85. Also, SM64 has areas which lag a lot more on an N64.

That's why he (and I, +others) want a console verification video showing the "true" console length as opposed to the Mupen length.

After even more exstensive research and a failed post, I have come up with several legitimate reasons as to why this should not be published. 1.) Nothing in this run provides me with a good excuse to post ponies in the discussion thread. 2.) Arbitrary amount of authors. This just proves that this TAS was made by a bunch of lazy slobs who enjoy havin others do their hard work. 3.) Kyman is included as an author. Kyman has a published run that I have beaten. This proves that his work on this run is suboptimal. 4.) There are too many noises in this run. This makes the run distracting. I wanted to listen to the music. 5.) Arbitrary ending time. The run should have ended earlier and let the viewer complete the final stage. This makes the viewer feel like they have contributed to the TAS. I hope all you yes voters feel silly now. Don't worry, I will hack the poll and add 1000 no votes to make up for your misguided yes votes. That is all.

I liked how the 95th star was collected.... just death, you know no big deal Time to get the others. Edit: I still cannot believe my guess was off by 1 second and 2 milliseconds! I'm only up to the 19th Star, and this run hasn't stopped making me say "What the hell??!?" If the rest of the run is like this (and judging by the margin by which it beats the real-time WR, I don't doubt it a bit), then it deserves the highest technical score and entertainment score possible!

this run just blew my mind from the begining to the end the creativity, the speed, the overall smoothness, this run achievied to become something more than mere TASing, it became "art". For all the efforts put in it, all the collaboration and creativity, this run shows another new level of Gaming experience. for me this run not only deserve to be stared but also is definitly the TAS of the year. yes vote
