MKDasher's Comments

Yay, done at last! I didn't start TASing this game that long ago, so I have the least experience, but I really want to thank the rest of the team for letting me join and participate in this great project. It's been a really nice experience for me and I'm hoping that everyone enjoys watching the run as much as we did making it!

Nahoc's Comments

Yo, yo, yo! I must say, like Jeremiah and David, I'm really happy to finally see this completed run in the workbench. I had a blast TASing this awesome game with such awesome people.
I'd like to point out that a big part of this project was done by the Japanese TASers. When they were working on the "120 Stars" TAS, they used to go back a lot to redo and improve earlier stars, since they were working on a "perfect" TAS. We (sonicpacker and myself) got tired of being left aside the project, seeing how slow the progress on it was and decided to go along and do our own TAS. MKDasher later joined us. Not gonna lie, we used a lot of their inputs during the making of this movie (but always with permissions) and "quickly" finished the masterpiece that you're about to watch. Of course, some improvements were found during the 3-month period we worked on the project, but it's nothing too big.
We would like to thank all the Japanese SM64 TASers for their hard work and hope they will be able to improve this movie with a more "perfect" v2. Good luck guys!

sonicpacker's Comments

Well it's about damn time. No, but really, working with the community towards finishing this run has given me the best time of my life and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my teenage years. I've met so many awesome people and have had the best partners to work with. I'm thankful beyond words and I hope everyone that watches the TAS has a great time! I could go on and write a book about it, but I'll let the run speak for itself. And remember, SM64 isn't even near dead. Stay tuned, haha!

Known Improvements

Of course, in every long TAS, even with the highest standards and level of optimization, nothing is ever perfect. Here's a list of the known improvements. Most were discovered when we were already too far into the run to go back. They will be included in a new version made by a different team of TASers.
[dead image link removed]
  • CCM:
    • About 18 frames can be saved on "Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins".
    • 3 frames lost on "Li'l Penguin Lost".
    • 1 VI/s is savable during the "100 Coins" star.
  • BoB:
    • About 1 second can be saved on the "100 Coins" star with better coins manipulation.
  • WF:
    • "Chip Off Whomp's Block" is improvable by 3 frames.
    • "To the Top of the Fortress" is improvable by 7 frames.
    • 2 frames lost on the "100 Coins" star due to luck manipulation.
  • DDD:
    • 0"30 seconds lost due to random lag.
    • Extra frame lost for better lag manipulation.
  • LLL:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.
  • HMC:
  • BBH:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.

No, I have no problem of the authors of the run making money off TASing. I do have a problem on why noone else can except sonicpacker. What did he do that made him be allowed to have TASVideos link to his channel instead of the official one? Edit: And incase anyone still thinks I do have a problem making money, that comment was a joke. I think I explained why I keep making those jokes before.

Hmm, I see what you mean. Making exceptions just because this TAS is the "uber-TAS" seems a bit wrong, because we should treat all submissions and submitters the same. The better solution would still be to always link to the official youtube channel and if the author demands it to his channel as well (on the publication page). Yet I'd still prefer it, if the author could decide whether the video gets published on the official channel or not. If he wants it to only be viewable on his channel, he should simply have to link to the official channel as well as to tasvideos.org on his own youtube encode.

Everytime I see this game and hear it’s sounds, I wonder why it’s called „Super Mario” and not „Escape from nuthouse”. But I vote „yes”, since the number of rerecords is even crazier than those sounds.

I've come out of the woodwark to vote yes! Really nice job, and entertaining TAS. Just a few of my favorites include Big Boo's Balcony, 100 coins in Tiny Huge Island, and the complete demolishing of Tick Tock Clock that you guys achieved. I'd like to see a comparison of the applicable stars and current world records. I know a lot of the stars are not comparable, since you collect 2 stars at once, but it would be interesting to know how many frames are lost (or gained!?) compared to individual current world record stars. Great job guys!

I will never understand why so many people don't have any concern about attracting the attention of the copyright holders of the games. The copyright holders might, might, let the copyright infringement pass if you don't make money out of it. They may change their minds if you start earning with their property. (And yes, it is copyright infringement. The video game music has copyright protection, and most probably the graphics too. Just because the owners don't do anything about it doesn't mean it's not infringement. And "fair use" does not cover putting entire songs and large amounts of graphics on youtube.)
A bit off topic, but is one actually taking money away from the video game companies that produced the games? If anything, I would call it promotion and possible advertisement for the company. Sure, the music itself is rights of Nintendo, etc. However, in general, the consumers did not purchase games for the music, nor the images, but for the experience itself. Arguably, in newer games the purchase is for storyline and cutscenes (and game companies do have issues with people posting this). When one buys a video game, do they not purchase the images played for their own use? One should be able to do what they want with what they bought. Technically speaking, it is copyright (the music at least). Emulation has more copyright violation than the videos themselves though. Do piano players' songs get taken off Youtube because the music sheets nor piano weren't created by them? Creating and selling roms for profit is an issue; I don't see an issue with making profit off of something you created with the use of a video games' images, especially if this actually has no effect on the sales of a company. I don't think you could argue that because someone saw the images of a video game that they no longer will buy it because they already know what it looks like. If anything, the opposite would be true. About the TAS itself, it was really incredible. I love the optimization that went into it and there were a lot of unexpected results. I even watched a lot of the improvements as they came through on Youtube, but wasn't aware of about 50% of the video's content. Amazing work guys!

Copyright law isn't concerned nor cares about that. Copyright infringement isn't about whether someone makes (or doesn't make) money, or how much. My concern is, however, that the copyright holders tend to be lenient on game videos (even though they most probably would have the right to shut them down if they so wished), but they might change their minds if people are making money out of them.
Emulation has more copyright violation than the videos themselves though.
How so? Care to explain?

I simply have to quote myself:
MrGrunz wrote:
There are many gaming channels like Machinima, which have billions of views and thus gather thousands if not millions of dollars (yes, all those big gaming channels are partners), so I can't see how any TAS uploaded to youtube could make the gaming industry suddenly change their whole attitude towards youtube. Especially considering that even the most famous TASes usually don't even get close to reaching one million views (of course we've seen a few exceptions).
Making money out of TASing isn't going to change their whole attitude, because we would only gather a fraction of what other huge gaming channels (machinima and all the "Let's Play-Channels") have been gathering for years already. If they really forbid making money out of gaming videos, we wouldn't have had an influence on that.

Not really. Pretty much nobody knows this, as nobody actually reads EULAs, but rarely do you ever actually "buy" a game. Usually, the EULA specifies that any and all content remains property of whoever made it and you have merely bought the right to actually access said content. But I do agree with you (and MrGrunz): though the medium is not yours, the performance is. And indeed, if anyone will get gaming companies to suddenly start hating on gameplay videos, it won't be the TASing community. Worst-case scenario, we might elicit a patch. If we ever manage current-generation TASing. So never.

EULAs have nothing to do with this, though. Even without any kind of EULA or anything, copyright is most certainly not transferred simply because you bought a copy of the artwork. And since you don't own the copyright, you don't have any right to distribute or make derivative works from the original without the copyright holder's permission.

To whoever keeps changing the YouTube link on the movie page, leave it alone for now. I had a conversation with staff last night and we agreed that the author encode will be the only YouTube one. Thanks.
Honestly, the clouds look terrible with the texture filter you used in your encode. Aktan didn't make that mistake. So it's a bit of a shame if other uploads won't be allowed on YouTube, for no good reason (?)
It's not a mistake. In fact, it's entirely intentional and that's only your opinion. Well over 50% of people like the way the filters look and I get far more positive comments than negative ones regarding quality. Edit: I mean, look at the first 2 comments of the TVC one. Speaks for itself.
I haven't watched the video yet (still downloading), but I agree the clouds in his example pic look absolutely awful. Of course if everything else looks notably better then it may ultimately be okay. Question: Does the 640x480 encode available here http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=335125#335125 have the filter applied?

Why didn't I notice this run had been submitted? Unfortunately I'm at work right now, so I'm gonna have to wait to watch it :'( edit: Watched it. Some stars were clearly really clever, others showed tricks I was still unaware of, while others were simply fun to watch. This run is such an incredible effort, I can't begin to imagine it... 5 years? I was tired of working on my run for 1 year.

Why is "100% completion" listed as one of the tags? I mean, wouldn't 100% TECHNICALLY be unlocking all the cannons as well, since they are also something you'd unlock in the game? Also, I voted yes, obviously. - User 2
How can I help you King Dedede? I need a monster that can help me get Kirby. That´s what we do best at NME. You better give it with a money-back guarantee!

This game considers getting all the stars as "complete". It has a different message at the end if you beat the final boss with all stars and it also unlocks a secret (Yoshi and the special Triple Jump). One could argue that 100% should also include all coins, but usually 100% never requires you to max out specific counters, unless it's a highscore-TAS. The switches and the cannons have the problem, that the game doesn't keep count of them. Technically, you're just activating a trigger that changes some levels. If you wanted to include them, you would also have to open all doors
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

I was just rewatching this video, and something stuck out to me as weird but probably correct, just counterintuitive. In Dire, Dire Docks, you do Board Bowser's Sub before Manta Ray's Reward, rather than selecting Manta Ray's Reward in the list to activate it. Does it really take less time to long jump the extra distance than it does to select the star? Or is there something else going on?

It isn't possible to select star #5 from the menu unless stars 1, 2, 3, and 4 have already been collected. Even if 6 is collected first, so that the menu shows 5 blue stars and then a yellow, you can't move to select any of them beyond #1. Since Board Bowser's Sub is obviously star #1, and the manta ray doesn't appear unless star #5 is explicitly selected, there's no getting around the fact that at least one star must wait until the "painting" moves to the back.

All the images in this submission text are broken btw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhCcTeZCYcA The TASVideosChannel upload’s description links to the obsolete SM64DS TAS. Should it be updated?

The publication was still linking to the obsoleted TAS as well, so I updated that. Not entirely sure about YouTube, it might update automatically at some point with the fixed description or it might not. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. If someone on YT happens to read the description (already rare enough) and then follow the link, they can just follow it through to the current run.

Unfortunately all the images in the author's comments are gone due to Imageshack ending its free service. :( If anyone's interested in fixing, the images were archived on the IA.

To whoever keeps changing the YouTube link on the movie page, leave it alone for now. I had a conversation with staff last night and we agreed that the author encode will be the only YouTube one. Thanks.
I'm not sure why the publication link was edited to the TVC upload recently. But if an editor could revert that changed link back as was agreed upon between staff and I, it would be much appreciated.
