I made a movie using the Justin Bailey code to beat the game in 4:22, but I don't know whether or not there's anything about it that makes it worthy of being submitted to Bisqwit.

I don't know about submitting it for AVI, but I suggest throwing down a gauntlet and declare the Justin Bailey Challenge open!
How fast can Metroid be beaten using the "Justin Bailey" oassword (and not UP+A)?
I'd imagine that's why he made this :)
I would like to see one of you two all-stars try to pull off the no boss run, although I wouldn't have any idea how to quickly put it together.

The any% run is on hold for now. I have decided to go ahead and make an improved 100% run. I will be using Up+A this time around. I'm already a few seconds faster. I'm also being much more aggressive this time around.
Map of my new route. Stars are reset points. I haven't decided on the best path through Kraid's lair. I have a few different ideas to test out once I get down there.
My progress so far.
If for honesty, you want apologies, I don't sympathize.
I got 2 ideas to modify that route-
1. up+A after 8, do kraid's lair, get 37, procede to 9. Its a question of going to tourian from game start and going from 8 to norfair, or going to tourian from norfair/game start and going from game start to norfair. I bet it'd be slower.
2. Go from 18 to 23, then do Ridley's lair, then do 19,20,21 and 22 then up+A. This could be close, there less horizontal distance but more verticle and you'd have to go through the secrete passage twice.

That looked promising, as it's pretty much the same distance both ways. However, if I go to Kraid's lair first, I won't have High Jump Boots, Wave Beam, or Screw Attack. I will also have much fewer missles to work with, which means a slower Kraid fight.
This looks pretty close. I will have to look at it closer when I'm not tired. Not having the Wave Beam for Ridley's lair could prove challenging. It helps quite a bit for all the enemies that come out of the pipes(don't remember their name.) It would also slow down the Ridley fight slightly, but not by much.

There's a number of ways you could do Kraid's lair and I have no idea which would be the fastest. This is the least obvious one I thought up:
Procede to Kraid the normal fastest way as you would on an any% run. Get the MP that's halfway there, kill kraid. Then glitch up 1 level on the first blue door to the right, then glitch up another level the blue door to the left. Get the MP to the left and up+A, then get the 3 remaining items up+A after each one.

I'm still confused on this glitch in Kraid's lair to get missiles. Where do you pull it off? All of the missiles are either behind missile doors or require bombs, right?

That is one of the routes I am considering. I'm going to probably have to play through the different routes to determine which is actually the fastest.
The upper-left missle tank can be acquired by going to the second door on the left in the shaft. Take that room to the next shaft. Then you have to door glitch up one floor and enter the door on the right. You can then grab the missle tank from behind. The time wasted door glitching does not warrant this route, in my opinion. Door glitching takes longer going up because you have to keep jumping to scroll the screen upwards.

It would be nice if you could glitch down to the middle MP. I tried for a bit on the left 2 doors down there but no success. You could still bomb boost up that the little thing at the bottom of the center column and go around to the right, but I suspect going from the left MP would be faster ultimately.

Sorry to take this a bit off topic, but I'm working on the fastest route for a bossless run and could use some input. What I have so far:
Collect missiles in Brinstar, backtrack up the shaft to the ice beam and bombs, freeze and bomb up to the highest room in this shaft for 5 more missiles, then drop down to enter Norfair.
In Norfair, collect 6 missile tanks (1 to the left, then go right and up for 5 more) for a total of 40 missiles, then travel back through Brinstar to get to work on Tourian.
Freeze and bomb into Tourian, max out missiles on metroids, then kill all but one Zeebetite, leaving 8 missiles. Exit the room to collect 2 missile tanks from metroids, and re-enter with 40 missiles to kill the last Zeebetite and Mother Brain.
Does this seem optimized? (Or does it just sound plain stupid?)

You will be one missle short if you do it that way. Mother Brain takes 32 missles plus one to break the glass. You will have to back out of Mother Brain's room twice to refill missles.
Here's the route I would take:
Using Up+A
1. Maru Mari
2. Lower Brinstar Missle Tank
3. Brinstar Ice Beam.
4. Norfair 5 Missle Cluster. I'm pretty sure you can't get there without the high jump or bomb boosting, so you will have to door glitch up. This should still be faster than getting bombs.
5. Up+A.
6. Tourian.
Not Using Up+A
1. Maru Mari
2. Lower Brinstar Missle Tank
3. Bombs.
4. Norfair 5 Missle Cluster.
5. Norfair Ice Beam.
6. Tourian.
This will leave you with 30 missles. There are 5 zeebetites which take 8 missles each, and Mother Brain, which takes 33 missles. Kill 3 zeebetites, then refill. Kill the last two, fire 9 more missles at Mother Brain, then refill again. Kill Mother Brain. Someone posted way back in this thread saying they tested that Mother Brain remembers its damage if you do not get any energy pickups. If this is not true, you should get the missle tank in Norfair, left of the starting shaft.

Hmm - can anyone think of any way I wouldn't need to reload twice? I would think collecting even the furthest missile tank would be faster than reloading twice, which means I would need 9 total instead of 8.
Right now, there's 2 in brinstar and 6 in norfair (5 in one cluster).
Perhaps this:
Collect 1 in brinstar, continue to norfair, grab 1 just left of elevator, go right then down, collect 2 and the ice beam, go back up and get the 5, then Tourian?
At worst, I feel as though this would be one of those style-for-speed tradeoffs you sometimes have to make. Admittedly not knowing Metroid nearly as well as some other games, I'd say go for this route. I know I'd be more entertained by a bit more running around Zebes as opposed to a second reload (Which I would think you could manipulate so as to be faster than the extra missile pickup; don't forget that Metroids drop 30 missiles a pop).
Emptyeye.com- Come for the music, stay for the blog.
Well, that's a question of the maximum that we've been talking about. With only collecting a certain amount, there's only so many you can fire before you reload, regardless of how many the metroids drop.
In other words, when you wail away at the metroids, you need to make sure you save 5 to be able to reload. There are 5 Zeebetites and Mother Brain, taking up a total of 73 missiles. With only 1 reload, my original plan was to collect 8 tanks (40 missiles), kill 4 Zeebetites (using 32 missiles), then reload, go back and kill the last Zeebetite and Mother Brain (40 missiles). Because I knew Mother Brain took 32 hits, I thought it would work, but I didn't take into account the jar. So, 9 missile tanks are needed for only 1 reload. Now it's a question of the best route to get those 9.
I think any 9 route would be slower than a 6 route with reloading twice. I only see 3 missile pickups as another plosible solution, but this would require 7 reloads. If using up+A you could get 3 MPs in kraid's liar fairly quickly, might save enough time to be worth 5 reloads but I don't it. Aren't the nearest metroids still a ways after you get out of the Z room?
Here's the routes I think would be best:
using up+A:
1. roll :P
2. lower brinstar MP
3. 5 MP cluster in norfair (first boost up the white wall climber in the middle, then glitch up to the row with 3, not sure if you can jump up to the top row, but you could glitch up, might be able to manipulate things to get enemies to spawn up higher and use them to boost)
4. up+A
5. brinstar ice beam
6. up+A
7. Tourian
I'm pretty sure this^ was the route I wanted arc to try a long time ago.
Not using up+A:
1. roll
2. top left Kraid MP
3. botom Kraid MP
4. Glitch to middle left column (it can be done in secret passage room to the left and up 1 from fake kraid)
5. top right Kraid MP
6. brinstar ice beam
7. tourian
I think this^ route is the coolest ;)
Not using up+A (orthodox way)
1. roll
2. lower brinstar MP
3. norfair 5 MPs
4. glitch down
5. brinstar ice beam
6. tourian
up+A, 9 MP:
1. roll
2. lower brinstar MP
3. top left norfair MP, up+A
4. 5 MPs, up+A
5. brinstar ice beam, up+A
6. top left kraid MP, up+A
7. top right kraid MP, up +A
8. tourian
NO up+A 9MP
1. roll
2. top Left kraid MP
3. top right kraid MP
4. brinstar ice beam
5. lower brinstar MP
6. top left norfair MP
7. 5 MPs (then glitch down)
8. tourian

Call me a dunsky, but I don't think I can get the Norfair ice beam or 2 of the missile tanks in the five cluster without bombs.
It's looking like the only option is 4 missile tanks in Norfair and 2 tanks and the ice beam in Brinstar and go for a 6 tank run.

To get the top 2 missle tanks, you can bomb boost jump or door glitch. It may be possible to get a ripper to spawn so you can get up there with the ice beam. I do a bomb boost jump to get up there in my new run. You also need to do the same just to get to the 3 missle tank room.

The 3 at the top are wide open, but the two through the door just below the 3 are blocked by a bomb wall. Getting to the door isn't the problem. Is there a way to glitch up to the 2 tanks from somewhere else? Or am I missing something simple?
