Welcome to 2015 where we bump this to be noticed and talk about anime once more. You can always check AniChart for the latest anime that is out for 2015 or you can bring up something you watched in the past or currently watching, yadda, yadda. Anything marked in red has been rated M (or higher). Anything marked in blue means I just picked it up late during the season, it will be purple if rated M. It will return to default when I catchup. Anime that have come out so far in 2015 (That I've watched & Completed): Actually, I Am (Jitsu wa Watashi wa) Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu) Durarara!!x2 Shou Durarara!!x2 Ten Digimon Adventure tri. Underline ones are the ones that I liked (besides those that are bold) but wouldn't probably not recommend. If you are planing on watching the series to Index you have many ways of watching this series. I am personally watching it Air Date order.

I've definitely got some overlap with what's been posted here already, so here's what hasn't. Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Aporon) - a coming of age / friendship / romance story centered around jazz with plenty of feels. Naturally, the soundtrack is AMAZING, but don't you dare listen to it before watching (because spoilers, yes, really). Faithfully covers about 90% of the manga. SFW. Nichijou - a wildly over the top caricature of the "ordinary" lives of a group of female high school students. Not the fastest-moving or most eventful plot, but if full-on Japanese humor sits well with you and you can recognize at least some of the occasionally obscure (to non-natives) cultural references, it's a riot to watch. Strangely enough, its less serious sections tend to have better animation than many serious anime. Mostly SFW with some PG-13 suggestive themes. Initial D - a staple for anyone even mildly interested in mountain racing / drifting. It's not the most realistic thing ever, but it's not so far out there to be a turn off an automotive enthusiast like myself. I'd put it at about 75% reasonable, 25% fluff. Anyway, it's well-known enough that I probably don't need to say any more. Mostly SFW with some PG-13 suggestive themes and language. Samurai Champloo - a serious / not serious story following two very dissimilar samurai and the girl they're indebted to. Same director as Cowboy Bebop and it shows. Somehow anachronistically mashes in some hip-hop style, but it works incredibly well overall. Great anime all-around. NSFW.
Current Project: Pocky & Rocky (SNES) improvements Status: Stage 2 - fighting the octopus Frames improved so far: 577

Hm. Since the last time I posted here which was over a year ago, I watched a lot more anime: - Tonari no Seki-kun - Danganronpa (anime) - Vividred Operation ... ok, that wasn't much. I also watched about 40 episodes of Aikatsu! at random; do note that it is a kids show (like Precure) and I don't think it's worth watching unless you want to learn Japanese by listening. I've finally decided to follow at least some anime on a weekly basis (i.e. as it airs), which I never really did before. Though this could change, I'm currently following Kantai Collection (Kancolle) the anime, Idolmaster Cinderella Girls the anime, and Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (known in some places as Assassination Classroom or Ass Class). The first two already have existing fanbases from popular game media (easy justification from my point of view) and for the third one I followed the manga and liked it.

Check out "Boku no Hero Academia" manga.. it's so good, maybe it'll have anime adaptation eventually. It's sort of like xmen mutant world, and main character does smart thing like what Captain America does.

AngerFist, have you watched/read Shingeki no Kyojin yet? You probably shouldn't, because the anime's first season is barely 1/3 through the story, and it's good enough to be depressed at how long they take to continue. Some recent stuff I watched... Kill la Kill: Very much a love-it-or-hate-it thing. Think of it as of Gurenn Lagann of magical girl genre: super fast-paced, decidedly over the top, and full of references and subverted tropes. If you manage to finish the first episode without a feel of disgust or anything of that sort, you'll be very impressed by how clever, nuanced, and generally well-done this show is on so many levels. 9/10. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (the movie trilogy, I skipped the TV series to save time™): While we're on the subject of magical girls, this is more like the Evangelion of the genre; a work that tackles some of the questions and undertones interesting to the mature audience, and presents it in a very solid, satisfying way. 8/10. Steins;Gate: There's been a lot of hype surrounding this show, allegedly based on the thundering success of the visual novel it was based upon, so I decided to check it out. This show left me with mixed feelings, mainly because of how I wanted to like it and how it tried to be likable, but it didn't quite work out. The premise is pretty fun, and characters are somewhat likable, even though they behave very cliche a lot of times (I swear, at least three of them acted out the typical tsundere "it-it's not like I care about you!.." bs a good deal of the time). The pacing, for one, is amazingly bad: over the course of the first nine or so episodes, virtually nothing happens. When you put shows like the aforementioned SnK, KLK, or Madoka in comparison, they manage to tell a helluva lot of story during this timeframe. The story and how it develops is barely held together, but when it works, it does. There's a LOT of genre cliche and various forms of fanservice that is mostly played straight, sometimes to an aggravating degree. The sweetness factor and that some of the characters actually made me care somewhat saved it in my eyes, but I really see this as little more of a lowest common denominator show which has something for everyone but ultimately excels at nothing. 7.5/10. The Lives of Highschool Boys (Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou): Actually this was the second time I watched it (first time was somewhere in 2009 or so) because I remembered just how good it was and decided to watch again. Laughed all the way through, just like the first time. 9/10. Sakasama no Patema: The studio that did a short called Pale Cocoon back in the day tries its hand at a child-friendly Ghibli-like tale and one-ups Ghibli at it. Who would've thought! Then again, with Makoto Shinkai and Katsuhiro Otomo each managing to successfully do it earlier, this is hardly surprising. This movie's premise also connected with me in a very surprising way: when I was a kid, I would sometimes hang from metal bars and other similar playground objects upside down, straightened my feet in the air, looked at the endless space below them and thought how crappy it would be to "fall" there. Many years later somebody made a movie about that exact thing. 8.5/10. The Wind Rises: Miyazaki one-ups himself (lol) in his latest feature. Easily my favorite Ghibli movie since Howl's Walking Castle, and perhaps my favorite original (if you can call a semi-biography original, that is) story since I don't remember when. 8.5/10. Shingeki no Kyojin: Yep, really good, and closely follows the manga which is top-tier. 8/10. Spikestuff, Durarara is rated R now? It's tame as hell (hell, Soul Eater can be more disturbing at times).

I actually meant exactly that! Pity to see him go, but then again I like it more when great artists leave on a high note rather than gradually decay into obscurity.

Thank you my dear friend for suggesting new interesting anime shows. Much obliged :) I got to say though, after your recommendation of Shigurui, not a single show afterwards has managed to caught my attention. When you recommended Shigurui 1-2 years ago, and after watching the whole thing, it was most definitely one of my greatest moments in life. In my opinion, no other show comes near visually, stylistically and storywise near it. Obviously everyone has their own opinion :) But never have I seen a show like Shigurui that managed to tell in such an extremely vicious, marvel and unique way a story. A story which luckily happens to be about my favorite genre and era. One of maaaaaany things I love about Shigurui is their pretty extensive explanation of a sword technique and how someone like Fujiki discovers on his own new techniques. The music.... my lord... Absolutely top notch. I am such a proud owner of my bluray version of Shigurui :) I even tried inspiring people at imdb so we could together kickstart the continuation of the show.. :( 'Cause as you know there are so many things that needs to be told. Such a shame they didn't conclude show-wise the story. The manga is pretty long and rich in story-telling. So if you or any other spot a future or perhaps an old show that I have missed similar to Shigurui, please let me know!

Yea, I'm confused by this too, because it's a 15 in UK, M in Australia and heck if I know US and Japan. I should probably change what I have to the Australian rating system and red the MA15 and R for Australia... actually something that has the correct ratings than waiting. Because myanimelist is garbage for rating system (and scoring)

Man, I wish I could help you, but it doesn't seem like there's anything recent in the same/similar style (i.e. swordfighting + period Japan + ultra violent). The only thing that comes close is Beyond the Heavens/Souten Kourou (2009, 26 eps) (and mind you: I haven't seen it, just going by description here; it does seem good though). As for the old ones, I believe you got all of the best ones that I'm aware of. Shingeki no Kyojin has swordfighting as well, but it's more steampunk-ish and has quite a different feel compared to period shows (well, it's to be expected since it's fantasy). There's also loosely related ninja/samurai-ish stuff that I haven't watched: Katanagatari, Time of Shura/Shura no Toki, House of Five Leaves/Saraiya Goyou, Kage OVA (sex and violence, lol). Most of those seem to have good ratings, but proceed at your own risk.

creaothceann, feel free to watch a few episodes of Shigurui and you will understand what I am looking for. To be fair, Rurouni Kenshin compared with Shigurui is like comparing a sweet kitty with an astounding huge Tiger :D creaotheceann, please watch this at 10:52. The supreme leader of Kogan style Iwamoto Kogan asks his right wing guy Gonza about his opinion of who should be his successor of his property, wealth and ultimately to wed his daughter Mie. It's between Irako Seigen or Fujiki. Gonza replies Fujiki and Kogan shovs a sword in his mouth! Because he gave the wrong answer :D:D:D Gonza looked like the Joker afterwards (that's how ruthless they are in that story and yes he survived). A lot of other great examples in the series.

I would suggest Basilisk for violent historical ninja story. May not be that close to some of what was mentioned but definitely a mature audiences only affair!

It's been years since I watched Death Note but I remember it was a bit bland especially after a certain plot point. I vaguely remember some parts had way too much dialogue to be enjoyable...

I’ve re-watched it recently and even after *spoiler* it’s not actually bad. I don’t remember ever thinking the dialogue was too long. Bland? No idea what you were watching. Other good anime: Ef – A Tale of Memories Kino’s Journey CLANNAD Spice and Wolf Serial Experiments Lain Mushishi Black Lagoon Gunslinger Girl Elfen Lied Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Cowboy Bebop School Days GANTZ Mnemosyne

I've recently watched all of Mushishi; confirming its absolute brilliance. 9/10 easily. Out of the more recent ones, One-Punch Man is definitely the most enjoyable one. With that level of animation quality we're probably going to have to wait a couple years for a season 2 though. And Gintama is still as good as ever, at least when it does comedy (its attempts at drama are way too shoddy and ridden with cliche to the point of being 100% predictable). The rest can be safely ignored.

I watched several episodes of Mushishi many years ago, but eventually I got tired of the recurring scheme: The guy wanders to some location, and there's something strange going on, and the cause is this mushi. And you watch an episode after episode, and in every episode, there are new unpredictable supernatural things the mushi are apparently causing. You don't get a sense of a world being established, and you don't get to feel engaged to the story or the characters. The only thing you see is more things pulled out from the writer's ass.

At some point mid-season 1 you get some background on the world and the protagonist, and it's expanded some more in season 2 but never properly focused on. The reason is that the show itself is not about the protagonist (there are many episodes where he only appears on screen for a couple minutes or so); rather, the protagonist serves as a narrative backbone that strings the episodes together, provides some insight on what's happening to the viewer, and advances the plot of each story when needed. The real drama that happens is about the people who become afflicted with or fall victims to the "extra" forces of nature that the mushi represent, and how they deal with it (or fail to do so). In this sense, it's like a collection of fairy tales that all of us have read at some point in our childhood, told through the eyes of a single storyteller, and it bears the same magical feeling without pandering to or insulting the audience's intelligence.
