EXCLUDING JAPAN, AMERICA AND CANADA. IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED A SINGLE GHIBLI FILM, OR YOU'VE ONLY SEEN A HANDFUL. NETFLIX WILL BE STREAMING THEM. Link to video You will notice I have marked those rated M in Australia with red. It's the equivalent to America's PG-13. These aren't recommendations, I usually do that with a bold on them. From February 1st: Castle in the Sky (1986) - Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa My Neighbor Totoro (1988) - Tonari no Totoro Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) - Majo no Takkyuubin Only Yesterday (1991) - Omoide Poroporo Porco Rosso (1992) - Kurenai no Buta The Ocean Waves (1993) - Umi ga Kikoeru Tales from Earthsea (2006) - Gedo Senki From March 1st: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) - Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä Princess Mononoke (1997) - Mononoke Hime My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) - Tonari no Yamada-kun Spirited Away (2001) - Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi The Cat Returns (2002) - Neko no Ongaeshi Arrietty / The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) - Karigurashi no Arrietty The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013) - Kaguya-hime no Monogatari From April 1st: Pom Poko (1994) - Mimi wo Sumaseba Whisper of the Heart (1995) - Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - Howl no Ugoku Shiro Ponyo (2008) - Gake no Ue no Ponyo From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) - Coquelicot-zaka kara The Wind Rises (2013) - Kaze Tachinu When Marnie Was There (2014) - Omoide no Marnie You may notice that Grave of Fireflies (1988, Hotaru no Haka) is missing for those that want to see it. Allegedly Netflix Europe actually already has this, I can't confirm this as I'm Netflix ANZ (AusNZ) and we don't have it. This list also comes from NetflixANZ which confirms that it's everywhere except again, Japan, US and Canada.

Like Spikestuff, I enjoyed Date A Live (S1) but I don't know if I'd recommend it to others. It's a mostly light and playful anime about romancing girls from space and teaching them about the joys of Earth like waterparks, ice cream, and first-kisses. It's really cute and made me nostalgic for my own childhood. I'd say it doesn't take itself too seriously, kind of like One Punch Man. Oh, and definitely watch One Punch Man, that one I can recommend. SAO:A's 2nd season is half finished, they're taking a break and more episodes will release sometime in April July now because of the pandemic. If you don't like cliffhanger endings, you might want to pause after finishing S1 so you can watch the whole S2 nonstop. (EDIT 2021: All S2 episodes have aired now.)

While I live in the US and feel like we're being excluded, at least Ghibli brings their movies back to theaters here every year. I think it's the best way to appreciate the detailed animation in their movies, though they can be more expensive than most movie tickets. I also found a list of "healing" anime that are supposed to be relaxing and have little to no conflict. I will likely be watching some of these in the near future. Edit: I forgot to mention the Kirby anime! I watched the Japanese sub version online as a teenager and much prefer it over 4Kids' English dub. It takes place in a reality separate from the games, where Kirby is still a baby, but becomes a mighty warrior on inhaling certain enemies. Described by the director as a "life drama", it includes different characters from the games and Dedede as the self-declared ruler who regularly threatens the safety of everyone on the planet. Good for kids too, maybe ages 7 and up. Also just skip the episode "Birth? Kirby's Younger Brother" / "Kirby's Pet Peeve". It's really sad for no reason and the events in it are never mentioned again anyway. Kirby gets a dog and the dog dies, that's it.

Okay, so the next season actually looks quite promising. Just in time for the quarantine! First off, we finally get the adaptation for the holy grail of Korean webtoons: Tower of God—which is something that hasn't really happened before aside from the few very cautious steps. This isn't the only webtoon slated for a 2020 adaptation, either: The God Of High School and a full adaptation of Noblesse will both air in the second half of the year. All of these are big guns, and if they are received favorably, it means other good webtoons may have a chance for a TV series in the future. Imagine Bastard or Home Sweet Home! (And no, not Solo Leveling; that's just Sword Art Online all over again.) Then we have another Koji Kumeta adaptation—that's the author of Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei and Uchouten Kazoku / The Eccentric Family. Definitely an interesting writer, and the new show has an interesting premise, so I have high hopes for this being the sleeper hit of the season. Then there's the new original Trigger show which, if the last few were any indication, will likely generate a lot of hype and end up a disappointment. :D Hopefully this one will not suffer as much from self-plagiarism and contrived endings. That being said, the director previously worked on Little Witch Academia (also as a director) and a whole bunch of certified top-tier productions as a key animator. So if anything, I suppose we can at least expect excellent visuals. Suddenly, a new 24-episode Ghost in the Shell anime directed by foremost cyberpunk specialists Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki! In 2020! After 16 long years! Exclamation mark! No, seriously, this is big. Super high hopes for this. And I just noticed a show based on Hiroaki Samura's latest manga. That is the author of Blade of the Immortal and a bloody excellent artist. As it usually happens, there's a high chance none of that glory will be present in the TV series, but a man can dream, right? There are also a few more potentially interesting, somewhat more adult-oriented new shows, both original and adapted (e.g. Arte, Yesterday no Utatte, Appare-Ranman, etc.), but it's probably too early to be excited about those. We'll see. And of course, the low-hanging fruits of the season: the edgy bloodfest and the usual isekai. I expect these to be trainwrecks, but who knows? I've been wrong before, though unfortunately not too often when I'm being pessimistic about a show. And if all of that wasn't enough, we also get a whole bunch of sequels! Of which I'd like to note the second season of Kaguya-sama and the third season of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, both among the very best romcoms to come out from Japan. The latter in particular is very a pleasant surprise since the second season aired a long five years ago. Then we have the third season of Kingdom—also coming after a long seven-year break—and the arc that finally got Food Wars axed (for a very good reason). All things considered, this season brings a lot of long-awaited shows to the table and has a very high chance of being the best season of the year by a solid margin. And a special note to AngerFist (and everyone else for that matter): watch Dorohedoro! It's turned out to be a really good adaptation of a fun, wild, and original action manga. One of the few cases where a dystopian setting is used for a good purpose and not just to be edgy. And also watch Castlevania, though it's not really an anime. It's quite good! Both are/will be on Netflix (Dorohedoro only on Japanese Netflix so far, so either wait for the English version or watch the fansubbed version).

With the launch of HBO Max in the USA, almost all of the Ghibli films are now free with a streaming subscription! This is the first time this has ever happened in my country. All the movies listed on Studio Ghibli's Wikipedia page are included except for Grave of the Fireflies, though it also includes Nausicaa. This amounts to 21 movies. HBO Max supports profiles so it might be wise to share a subscription with friends to make the $14.99/month a little easier to justify.

I had to Google this cause Australian. I actually thought that Disney still had the rights to the Ghibli films in the States so I was surprised it wasn't on Disney+ Disney relinquished their rights to Ghibli films in 2017 (exc. When the Wind Rises, 2020) which was then promptly picked up by GKIDS and distributed by Shout! Factory.

Much obliged moozooh! Per your recommendation, I watched the whole first season of Dorohedoro. I think it was after the second episode where I was persuaded to watch the whole thing. I quite enjoyed it on Netflix. By the end, almost every scene with Johnson and Ebisu was gold :D Also covered the latest of Castlevania. I am anxiously waiting for this though: https://comicbook.com/anime/news/vampire-hunter-d-creator-new-anime-gibiate-anime-expo/ The Vampire Hunter D movie is one excellent piece of art. Keep the recommendations coming my man :)

Animes I watched this year: Welcome to NHK. Watamote. Sakurasou. Prison School. Shimoneta (lol). I stopped watching anime like 2014-2013~ but only a few months ago got back to it(must be the quarantine). I would rather read manga than watch anime, animes adapations often get cancelled(stuck at 12 eps) for low popularity and the studios move on to the next adaptation(and the cycle restarts). Mangas that I have read is: Shadow Star. Bokurano. Hallucinations from the womb. All of Junji ito works. Yugioh (original 1996 manga). Susuka(reading right now). Akira (didn't finnish). Devilman (original 1971 manga). Jojo Bizarre Adventure I & II

Watching the first 4 out of (probably) 12 episodes of season 2 of The Promised Neverland, I'm making these notes: - The new opening is pretty good imo. - The anime does a good job at showing how even the smaller children learn survival skills like herb collecting and hunting. - I don't remember if the kids listening to the radio transmissions every evening or them hunting slimy fish is canon. Either way, the latter seems odd because fish could be poisonous and they didn't try to look it up in books first. - Up until episode 4, until they find the shelter, it seems very faithful to the manga. - After that point the anime changes things up drastically: -- In the manga, the kids immediately find the "nameless man" in the manga, but he doesn't appear in the anime so far. -- The scene of Isabella having to take responsibility for the children's escape: It happens right after the escape in the manga and it is short, with unknown outcome. In the anime it is different and broken up into multiple parts, showing that Isabella is being given a chance to live. -- There are intruders to the shelter in episode 4, which didn't happen in the manga until much later in the plot (two arcs later). It seems odd to implement here, because "nameless man" didn't appear yet and he has to appear in the shelter since there are notes scratched into the wall or written in a book, associated to him and that would mean they have to take back the shelter they just abandoned - a bad idea since the enemy would know the location. So basicly, since season 2 would be a bit lacklustre if it went straight on like in the manga, the showrunners seem to have decided to implement plot points that would only appear later. This is interesting, but the parts that are not faithful to the manga could confuse some fans. In fact, manga fans on reddit seem rather pissed at the changes.

Looks at previous yearly post. lmao Welcome back to 2022, where everything's made up and the Spikestuff was actually re-watching Anime this year but they didn't make a yearly thread so they forgot what they re-watched. :V AniChart shows the latest anime that's out this year or you can bring up something you watched in the past, you can use MyAnimeList to assist. Spring '22: Black★★Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall - THIS IS GOING TO BE TRASH, AND I'M GOING TO LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT. Date a Live IV - THIS IS GOING TO BE TRASH, AND I'M GOING TO RESENT EVERY SECOND OF IT.
