Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a submission for Super Mario Advance using only Princess Peach with warps.

Game Information

The Super Mario Advance version of Super Mario Bros. 2 includes several new features such as the addition of the enemy Robirdo (a robotic Birdo acting as the boss of World 3, replacing Mouser), the addition of the Yoshi Challenge (in which players may revisit stages to search for Yoshi Eggs), and an all-new point-scoring system (a first for the game). Graphical and audio enhancements were also added in the form of enlarged sprites, multiple hit combos, digital voice acting, and such minor stylistic and aesthetic changes as an altered default health-meter level, boss-order, backgrounds, the size of hearts, Princess Toadstool being renamed to the now-standard "Princess Peach," and the inclusion of a chime to announce Stars.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA RR v23.6 svn461
  • Uses a Suboptimal character
  • Uses Warps
  • Aims for fastest time
After seeing this submission, #4055: turgish's GBA Super Mario Advance "princess only" in 11:37.87 I decided to take this into my own hands. Despite having spend about less than 24 hours on this, it's pretty solid. I saved 03:16.46 over that submission and also beats adelikat's NES version TAS by about 8 seconds.
More to add later.

feos: Judging!

Nach: Updated submission with new one from author(s).

The game is a graphical improvement over the old game (NES) but I would rather have a 100% run.
When TAS does Quake 1, SDA will declare war. The Prince doth arrive he doth please.

In the case of a 100% run, there's a lot of new content over the original. IIRC, new boss even. So someone should TAS that properly.

I may take up that project once done with my primary one, which is Sonic Advance "100%". Though we still have to find a definitive meaning for SMA's "100%" TAS goal.

As silly as this port is with its abundance of bad voiceovers, the gameplay is still very good. I'll leave it to the judges to determine whether this game is different enough to warrant separate publication. As for me, I'm voting Yes, because I rather enjoyed a less-glitchy runthrough of SMB2 with a new route. I also would love to see how a 100% run looks.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/881899246/SMA_Peach-1-1.vbm I checked the 1-1, and improved 39 frames when get bomb. Mitjitsu is right, go left is faster on the first screen. I don't know the nes version glitch can be used to gba version or not, but I never succeed to use glitch. So I stop at getting the bomb. I found this game is a little hard to splice. The same axis value and the same input, but the result is desync.

For 100% it's probably best to start a run with SRAM and do all 20 stages while obtaining the 5 Red Coins/2 Yoshi Eggs per stage. Making the SRAM: Complete the game on one of the files to unlock Yoshi's Egg Challenge, make sure you avoid picking up any of the 5 red coins on the first playthrough, this removes the blinking effect when you revisit those stages (TASing the run that is).

just had a thought since you can save and quit then go back and replay a level would it be faster in the run to get the warp for level 4 s&q then go to level 3 to open level 5 then go to world 4-2 and then use the world 6 warp to open world 5-3 up? or is the current way the fastest? also I like the 100% idea from greenalink but lets be honest do we really want to see that much back tracking since in order to get the Yoshi eggs to complete you need to beat the level no warps allowed which would mean you would have to fight all the bosses....just not in any order .

Watched the updated version. It still isn't entertaining enough to change my no vote. Also, the current peach only run exists because it peach isn't used at all in the normal run. What's the purpose of having the same for this version?

Hold on a moment and let me get this straight. You were saying before that just because the run doesn't make use of glitches that it's no good.. Clearly, that is your standard for judging this run and that you're sticking with it. In other words, No Glitches = Not Entertaining.. Why don't you try the game out for yourself to see if all of your precious glitches still work in this version... If they all do work, then I'll accept that my run is to be marked as one of the most non entertaining and worst runs that has hit the workbench.

It's my opinion. I'm not saying that everyone must agree with it. Heck, if this run ends up getting published, I wouldn't rant about it for days or anything, since clearly I would be the minority to find this run unentertaining. :P

GoddessMaria15, why are you attacking those who criticize your run? These comments you're responding to are not personally attacking you. I voted "no" because there are several improvements that were suggested and demonstrated, leading me to believe that the overall technical quality of the run is not high enough. Note: This doesn't mean I think you're a bad person. However, I do think that the few people rushing in to defend your honor in this thread (and you, to a lesser degree) are behaving obnoxiously. Feel free to dismiss my opinion if you feel it is helpful to do so. I don't plan to continue any discussion here.

I was not trying to attack anyone, but from the day that I first submitted this one until today, I have been feeling my emotions stirring wildly and leaving me with great uncertainty. My reason for saying what I said was because inside, it felt as if I was being constantly pushed down and discouraged, that I needed to defend myself somehow. I do admit that it did come up wrong and I should've been more careful on what I said. I really feel now that submitting this run was a very terrible idea as all I ended up doing was causing problems... For those that I have attacked or have been obnoxious to, I am deeply sorry! If only I was truly given the time and chance to implement the mentioned improvements, then maybe I would've "slightly" changed some people's minds. Either way, I am working at adding more of the ideas and improvements mentioned until there is no more room for doubts and once again everyone, I'm very sorry for my immature behavior during the time of submission up to today.

In fact, I'm a little disappointed your new submission. As JXQ said and my wip show, the technical quality still not high enough. The run of nes version has the high quality, but this run is not. I found another some improved ideas. In the first screen of 4-2, jump on the ground is higher than jump on "power". In second screen, try to stand on the top bee which fly to right, you can see that bee at frames 14380(or movie time 4分01秒). When climbing in 7-1(frames 19440, movie time 5分26秒), you should go to left screen to right first, and then go to right to left. I think you need spend more time to increase the entertainment, too. If you are still willing to improve it, let feos deley this submission.

With so much improvements keeping being brought up in the thread, I would suggest to move this movie as a WIP to the games forum and work as a real team.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

The only problem with that is that is that the ones saying that their are improvements either hasn't/won't touch the game to even give it a try or do not factor in the game's frame rules, which runs at the very start of the game.

Frame Rules 0x0010 - Global 255 frame timer There is no RNG in this game. EVERYTHING is dictated by this global timer. This timer resets to 0 before each level and ticks to 255 (256 frame timer). Some events like Birdo spitting his eggs, or veggies popping out of Wart's Veggie Machine only happen once per cycle. Thus, they are on a 256 frame rule! Other events like a rocket ship take off will be on this timer but have multiple opportunities per cycle. Thus they operate on smaller frame rules.
Note: I'm not trying to slander anyone. The ones that dislike the game due to being a port said so already themselves so I don't need to add more to that and the ones that are mentioning the improvements possibly aren't aware of the frame rules for the game.

Thanks, I just know how the frame rules work. In GBA version, address is 0x03001943. And I found a new improvement. In 6-1(frames 16030, movie time 4分28秒), you can choose the second line(save and continue), then use emulator's reset. It can be saved 76 frames.
