Would THIS be of assistance to you in planning, or are you like me and it's all greek to you? :P According to what's in there, running and jumping also affects item drops. Along with pretty much every other action in the game, really.

...there's even an item that depends on someone entering initials "SEX". Well, looks like you need to get your extraneous running moves on- don't stand still while you're blowing those wastebubbles.

That list only applies to the arcade version.

PLEASE use the umbrellas. I'm glad to see someone working on this! I really like this game but I think it could be done a whole lot faster. If the items are really as manipulatable as they are in the arcade version then your playing might not be optimal. You could be walking more after each stage to get the shoes, popping more bubbles, eating less fruit (at least until you get the shoes), and blowing more bubbles. You also ignore a few water bubbles. And there was one time you made a huge pile of bubbles and then... left it there. I wanted to see you dive in. Oh well. In level 3 you got an 'X'. How'd you do that? The enemies died 2, then 2. If you can get letter bubbles that easily then you might want to try doing it on purpose more often. Any letter bubbles you earn during a level where they can't appear are saved until you reach a level where they can appear. EDIT: Whoever encodes this, I have an idea :P

You actually just answered your own question. The 3+ simultanous enemy pop to make them appear happens in level One, and the next place where they can appear is in level 3. There is a limit to how often you want to get letter bubbles for a TAS though, since completing EXTEND brings up a cutscene. Unless the cutscene + skip to the next level is faster than the time it would take to complete said level the final leter is collected on, it isn't worth it to do so.

Unrelated to the TAS improvement, but I've just made a video that some might find entertaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXkIxp8dlyY This movie aims to pop a maximum combo on each level, then eat all the fruit. The current movie goes up to Level 20. I'm stuck on Level 35 at the moment, but I'll post another movie once I beat level 40.

very cool TAS, the next level will probably getting harder and harder... I'm curious how far you'll be able to go with one player.

When I was playing Bubble Bobble Plus on the Wii, I noticed there was an achievement list that was based upon getting special items, like candy, shoes, crosses, etc. And it gave a listing of how to get the stuff. Since it's based upon the original arcade game, I'm sure the same priniciples apply to the NES version. I don't have a listing and there's no FAQs on it, but if you can find out what it is, I'm sure it'll help.

Here's how to get the special items in the arcade version, if you can understand it. http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/file/583720/1222

Interesting challenge and a nice effort. With respect to improving the current run (now the eldest published run on the site), I think the only way to go is a run that uses 2 players and warps to the max. This game is way too repetitive, with too much transition time between levels to justify a full run. Failing that, or in addition, I can see supporting a play-around for this game that uses 2 players, does all/most of the levels, and focuses on being entertaining w/ big combos, Bub/Bob interacting or performing synch'd movements, etc.

Even if this look poorly optimized sometime(the new part is definitly better, thought) I feel like you can do your combo challenge for all the level with this new demonstration, as long as you don't run out of time..!

I think that the 2player run, is fun for the first two minute with bubble interact, but it become quicly lame... Also, I'm unsure if you can do some big diamond combo in two player-run. (thought if there a way to create a bubble combo enought big for game beaking this might be interesthing) Here we can heard the "hurry-up!" making everything more exceting as the level keep rolling on.

Any plans to continue this combo TAS, or perhaps start anew? I sure would like to see more.

Oh sweet memories... how I wish this came to a successful conclusion and was published. Unfortunately I lack the time and patience to attempt this.. but I am hoping some kind soul will lift this gauntlet up and accept the challenge. More entertaining then a warping run, that's for sure. I stumbled up on this video today. As soon as the boss gets active it has 5 hp instead of the usual 60. https://youtu.be/TaB-XKsRDlI

It happens when you pop a bobble inside the boss sprite before it gets active. Can be done alone in 1 player too. Nice

I get a feeling that a new TAS is needed... =).

New TAS would be cool, though the existing one is a beauty. This might be something worth looking into also. We got to the secret world without grabbing the items in 99. We were creating Everdrive savestates that playthrough, from round 50 or so. Might be that the savestating messed up the memory somehow? https://streamable.com/bqrcg
