In this topic, we will compete to see who can finish each level in the fewest number of time units.
Rules:
1. You may use a real NES, or you may use an emulator as long as you do not use save states or slow motion during the level. However, you may save before you start the level and load when you mess up to start the entire level over again.
2. Specify which version of the game you used to get your times.
3. Specify which kind of Mario you started each level with. The abbreviations, which are in parentheses next to the level, are S for Super Mario, F for Fire Mario, R for Racoon Mario, and no letter for Little Mario. You may not start with any other kind of Mario, but you may start with a star (but be sure to mention it if you do).
4. The name of each level will be in the form of world-level. The abbreviations are f for fortress, c for castle, d for desert, p for pyramid, t for tower, and h for hand stage. For example, world 1 fortress would be 1-f, and the second hand stage would be 8-h2. Times for auto-scrolling levels will not be kept track of.
Here are all the times I have so far. I got my times playing on the Japanese version of the game running in Famtasia.

8-1 (F): 282
8-2 (F): 292
8-f (F+star): 373
8-c (F): 356
Edit: I improved a time and also added in a new time.
Edit 2: Check out my awesome world 7 fortress time! 148 starting with Little Mario (which makes a huge difference in this level). If I started with Racoon Mario it would have been much faster, but then the level would be so short and easy that there would be no point.
Edit 3: 7-8 is really hard.
I finished world 1 so far on the US version. Here are my times:
1-1: 294
1-2: 293
1-3: 294
1-4 (getting P-wing): 223
1-f (S)(getting whistle): 286
1-5 (R): 286
1-6 (R): 291
It took me a long time to figure out how to do the early acceleration in
1-2 and 1-3. Also, 1-5 would be much faster as small mario.
I think world 7 would be fun for a speed competition, especially with the pipe maze levels.
1-f (S)(getting whistle): 286
I guess I need more work on that level. I haven't been able to master the part at the end where you jump into the leaf and start flying.
I think world 7 would be fun for a speed competition, especially with the pipe maze levels.
First I'd like to see you try world 8. For some of the levels it really took a lot of practice to get my times, especially the castle, so I want to see if you can beat them.
Also, 1-5 would be much faster as small mario.
Yeah, I've noticed that being Racoon Mario is a big disadvantage in a lot of levels.

Ok, I did some of the world 7 levels today, and editted new my times into my first post.
Check it out. I did the speedrun of the game on my friend's GBA and had him time me with a stopwatch. I managed a time of 11:19, from start button to entering the final door! Everything went perfectly on this run. All 3 hands were avoided and all the high-risk moves were pulled off successfully. Wish I got this thing on tape.
Here are the level times we wrote down:
1-1: 294
1-2: 291
1-3: 284
1-f: 287
8-1: 285
8-2: 290
8-f: 373
END: 350
I'm not sure what version it was. My friend has this GBA flashcard, and he had like a hundred nes game on it, all downloaded from the net. He also puts GBA games on it. It was awesome.
I played this game on the All-Stars version yesterday, and I did the first few levels rather well, but it seems though, that the time units run down a little faster in this version...
The US (and all subsequently released) versions of SMB3 are slightly faster than the Japanese version, as there is no opening transition for each stage. It saves about a second or two per level this way.
See if you can get a good run on the NES version, and then submit it to TG and SDA.
Edit: By the way, if you want to submit it to TG, don't forget that they ban the shortcut in Bowser's Castle that involves going through a wall. I'm not sure if SDA bans it also.
Will do. The run I did didn't use the wall shortcut. I just fell down the narrow path and made my way up the falling steps.
Also, I found out a neat trick while trying to come up with a faster way through 8-f. Take a look at this map of the world 8 fortress:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/super_mario_bros_3_level_08_fortress.png
Challenge: Finish the level without using the door labeled "D".
I think Tokushin took a different door in his no-warps video and used a glitch to go through a wall, but I didn't know it was faster than the normal route.
Edit: By the way, in case anyone didn't know this already, you need to type the link Sleepz posted into the address bar instead of clicking it since GameFAQs doesn't allow linking directly to the FAQs.
Edit 2: I just remembered what he did. He entered the door just before the door normally entered, and since he was on the right side of the door, he was partially inside the wall when he went to the other side so he got pushed through the wall. I'm pretty sure that would be slower since you can run much faster than you get pushed through a wall. Is this what you did or did you come up with something else?
hmm, I actually didn't watch that far in his vid. Yeah, that would be it. It is slower and it would be a banned trick, but still looks cool.
btw Michael, for 1-3, how do you start off the level? I always go over the top block to get over the boomeranger and then hit full speed once I get to the bricks, but this only works if the boomeranger is moving forward. The other way I do it is jump over the turtle, hit full speed, and then do a boost jump off the boomeranger, but that only works if he's moving backwards. What do you do for this part? I need something that can get me past him everytime and hit full speed before the bricks, without having to depend on luck and him moving in the right direction.
When I'm doing a whole game speed run I don't do it the same way as in a level speed run, and I don't get up to full speed before the bricks. If I remember correctly my best time (as part of a whole game speed run) for starting with super Mario and ending with raccoon Mario and getting the whistle is 283.
I got 11:35 on tape. It's 17 seconds slower than my best time, mainly because I get pulled in by one of the hands. Getting past all 3 seems impossible to do again, so I'll just settle for this run (unless someone can tell me exactly how the hands work and how I can get past them every time)
Next up is MM2.
btw, thanks for helping me fix my nes Boco. It runs just fine now. ^o^
I noticed that when the constantly shrinking square is near it's smallest size the hand will grab you. Wait until the square disappears completely before you try to pass them.
