I have not yet made any progress with this. I am not sure how to proceed with the ship minigame. Should I just re-enter the minigame on a different frame to get the prize I would want? This is not the fastest method but I don't know how to be sure to get right prizes won with consecutive games. For now I win first place Megalixir, second place Emergency exit. If I start another game now I would win White Curtain 3rd place or Remedy 2nd place. Which are not any good. I could win another megalixir and hope I get better prizes next round. I could do this: win a price -> re-enter game -> win a prize. Takes a bit more than a second to re-enter a game. But would be the easiest way. Better: win megalixir -> win emergency exit -> win megalixir -> new prizes next round, maybe I could get the item I want. This method is better but I don't know how I should plan this. With the monster immunities I did try 350 consecutive frames against a resistant monster (death eye) to see if scourge would hit but none of those did. I guess I'll have to try it some more.

What I would suggest is making two versions. The first version is the first method you said and, obviously, the second version would be the second method. Then it's simply a matter of figuring out which actually took less time to do. What items are you trying to get anyway?

The items from the shipgame would be: Cockatrice Claws I think I need 3 of these, but if resistant monsters are not immune I should bring more. Hermes Shoes maybe one. Emergency Exits 4 of these Megalixirs I don't know how many, depending on if monsters are immune or not. But surely the method of not re-entering the is quicker but it may not be possible to do that. Maybe I could get to win 2 good items in a row before I would have to re-enter the minigame. I tried some more of testing scourge against the death eye but still no good.

It was mentioned a little while back that the frame-based approach has no effect on anything in battle. You have to give different commands, ones that change how many random numbers are generated during the round.

I would imagine he's knew that. The enemy he's fighting is a fixed location fight. I would bet he meant he was starting the fight at a different frame.

Graphically and musically this version is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than the NES version. Go for it.

I'm going to attempt a speedrun of Final Fantasy I: Dawn of Souls, for GBA. I've read the FAQ thoroughly, downloaded the re-recording emulator for GBA,etc. Is there any other additional information I should know before starting my attempt?

You may want to start a topic in the GBA forum about the game, and post updates, get feedback, discuss strategies, etc. There are a couple existing topics in the GBA section that might fit what you're doing: Final Fantasy II: Dawn of Souls Final Fantasy 1 Soul of Chaos (1 & 2 Dawn of Souls) I don't know the numbering, so those may not be correct. Other than that, welcome!

Welcome to the forums Crimsonpride! Now I'm no expert, perhaps someone could clarify this. How similar are Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls and Final Fantasy for the NES. I always thought that it was a straight port, but I'm no expert. In which case you should download the NES version and the .fcm file and try and obsolete it.

Its not a straight port, but the main mechanics and plot points are the same. For example, in FF1 there was no MP, you had a cirtain number of times you could cast each level of spell. There is also some strange side dungeon I never explored much myself, but that probably wouldnt come into play in a timerun. Botom line, it would probably make the most sence to compare to the original nes version.

This should probably be moved to the GBA forum, heh.. The one major difference between this version and the NES version is that some enemies(bosses mainly) are completely immune to the Bane sword.

This is going to be my first TAS, ever, and I'm determined to finish it, from start to finish. The main goal is simply to reach, and defeat the final boss as quickly as possible. I'm lacking a general strategy at the moment, and the Bane sword strategy from the NES version won't work due to enemies being immune. The White Mage and Red Mage classes will be mostly useless, but at the moment I think Monks would be better than fighters simply because I won't need to purchase equipment.

I actually went with Two White Mages and Two Black Mages in this version, heh. I haven't beaten it yet myself, kinda lost interest for some reason. ;3 It's my favorite version of FF1 though. Looking forward to this TAS.

I don't know how much EXP you'll get along the way, but.. Monks do more damage based on level, while Fighters would do more damage based on picking up some super sword in a chest somewhere. EDIT: So I think Fighters and someone who can Haste..

I think my party of choice will be 2 monks/2 fighters and 2 black mages. Will a fighter hit harder than a monk? If they can, will the time taken purchasing weapons/finding them make up for it?

I think the best TAS party would be 1 Monk and 3 Red Mages. Monks hit harder than anything, and save you much money. This party should be the best for boss fights, and you should be running from all randoms. You should have your Monk being your designated attacker, and the other 3 RM's should be Temper and Hasting. Temper stacking + Haste = dead bosses fast. You shouldn't have to class change either. Edit: If you don't get enough XP for a Monk to be worth it, just use a Fighter and 3 RM's then.

There probably won't be much leveling done, so a fighter would probably be best. On top of that, I can easily manipulate Garland into dropping a long sword, making for a good early increase in attack power.

I would like to see this run made. I tried this a year ago but I gave up. Hope you will make it through. My party was 1 monk and 3 black mages. The good thing about this game is that all random battles can be avoided. This is what I had before giving up. ( I gave up because I couldn't manipulate the right prizes from the ship-minigame) Good luck!

Monk is most likely best choice in my opinion. Class change won't be necessary in this challenge as Master isn't THAT good so the whole class changing quest would be only waste of time. By the time you beat Astos, Monk will be strong enough to manage a lot better in remaining battles than Fighter. Also with Fighter you will be wasting time finding stronger weapons in dungeons while with Monk you can rush through dungeons with ease. Long Sword won't be THAT good because you can one-hit Pirates anyway and you can most likely one-hit Piscodemon with single Thunder by your Red Mages. I would HIGHLY recommend exactly same party as OgreSlayer; 1 Monk + 3 Red Mages.

After checking some information on weapons, a monk would indeed be far better than a fighter. Best of all, I developed myself a fairly good strategy to do this, and I can start creating this run. The ship game will be my best friend through this, as long as I can manipulate it.

2 problems with using red mages. Firstly, I'm attempting the Garland fight now, and they do crap physical damage, anywhere in the range of 3 to 10. Secondly, I'm going to need to level them so they can actually use temper and haste, because their magic levels are going to(respectively) need to be 2 and 4, meaning I need level 15 by the time I get to Elfheim so I can use haste. Peninsula of Power, anyone?

Why don't you buy thunder for all of them? You shouldn't be attacking physically with anyone other than your Monk. You also should be able to buy and use Temper right after you kill the pirates in the second town. I don't remember what level you have to be to use haste though. Edit: You would of course also want sleep on one of them. Another spell that might be worthwhile is blink. You might be able to manipulate it so you don't get hit every time.
