i got my hands full right now, and this game is kind of unforgiving (i did my best, i thought it was perfect, and still some levels were very improveable... even comparing to real times). so i don't know about working on this game... i might try finishing it, but... you know, like i said i got other priorities right now (it may take an year before i want to get back to this game)

Well, I can't hexedit this thing in. I think I'm pretty much hopeless at hexediting. Could someone with some reasonable hexediting experience help out?

You know what... I think I'm going to do 1-1 to 1-5, 2-5 to 2-1, 3-1 to 3-5, etc. because it will save something like 5 frames.

OK, so I beat the times for 2-5 through 2-2. But now I'm at 2-1 again! *cries* My WIP is here. I think I'll try reoptimizing 2-1 tomorrow. Maybe.

Well, I tried 2-1 again. Predictably, I can't get any better than 5"43 (one frame slower than FODA). So we have two choices here: - Let the one-frame difference stand, keep working on the movie. - Have FODA do it, have someone hexedit it in, painstakingly replicate FODA's route on a frame-by-frame basis, etc. What do you guys think?

You do realize, of course, that, since I can't get the 5"41 in the video [yes, I've tried, for a total of about 6 hours], I'm not going to spend any time on this until someone chooses one of those choices? I'm sort of a perfectionist, but sometimes you just have to give up, and, unless you guys think it's OK to have a TAS that's known to be slower than another WIP, I can't work on this movie anymore.

Why isn't Foda helping you do this? At the very least you could try copying Foda's run of that level frame by frame.

But I don't have time for that because of the AP tests, and when I tried to hexedit FODA's playing onto my run I got something that crashed halfway through, so I can't be sure that that will even work.

I mean just open a second VisualBoyAdvance window to play Foda's movie and imitate that level's movements little by little.

I can't get it to work - when one screen plays FODA's movie, the other freezes and won't let me see the graphics. If it's so easy, then, why can't I do it? (Or why don't you do it?)

Oh, right, there's some kind of memory-sharing bug in the Game Boy Advance part of the code now. We should ask someone to fix it!

Wouldn't it just be simpler to - accept the error as a fact of life - get FODA to help us out - get someone to hexedit it ? Seriously, though, I just tried it again, and that is the last time. I am not trying this level again until this WIP is finished, because it's taken too much of my time already. You can come up with suggestions if you want, but I seriously doubt that I'll play this level again unless it's a certainty that I'll get the 5"41 (or better).

If you're going to fix it at all, you should fix it NOW!

Yes, I know, but I haven't got the 5"41 yet and I'm not in a position to keep trying. So it's really impossible to work on this run.

i vote for ignoring the times and just making a visually perfect video...

What do you mean by "visually perfect", exactly? If you want a demonstration video of good strategies, that's all well and good, I've made a bunch of those, but the whole point of a TAS is to focus on times, and most of the good times require a good amount of jumpiness. I'm in this for the record times, personally, anyway; this is a good excuse to really work at the levels to see how low they'll go. That's my main reason to not focus on frames but on level times. Of course, this is a TAS... Why are we doing the Challenge levels anyway? Is the goal to get an 'M' rating as fast as possible, or just to complete the game?

I don't think this run is going anywhere, but working on it got me back into this game, and so I've been finding a lot of record-setting new strategies. Take a look at the one at http://www.mzrg.com/filepost/KK_a7-3_1433.vbm, for example. The old record was 17"43. I think it might be a better idea to make a run with only the Adventure levels. We can do a 100% run (with Challenge and Last Land levels) later, if we want, but a full Normal Adventure run might make more sense speedrun-wise. What do you think? I'd do it if anyone thinks it's a good idea.

ha, good news folks: I decided to make a perfect Kurukurukururin run, I have played this game for years (have it since the release) and i know olmost all tricks in this game. My only question regarding this is if I should collect all items (e.g. skinns) or if it would be enough to do a "all level with star + the three bonus levels with star" run? I would start this project tommorow since I live in germany and have to go to driving school now,so please tell me what you think.

I vote for collecting all items, and good luck with making it perfect. The problem is not much about the tricks, it's something else...

If you mean starting at the exat frame to get at maximum speed through the stages, then you are right, this could realy get a problem and would use many re-recordings. Plus, this is my first TAS ever made, but since it is on the suggestion page and i love this game I will try hard.

Be sure to watch the existing movies in slow-motion, you'll see that they seem perfect, but there are known better real time records, for some reason.

I have a records page at http://www.mzrg.com/games/records.shtml. If you're going for game time, you should try to equal/beat these records. Of course, you don't have to - if you're going for fastest time, for example, feel free to cut corners and take damage. It depends what you want. Good luck!

Looks like this game has been abandoned twice already... It's time for a third time :D I just started trying to TAS it and played first two levels skipping training. I was aiming for minimum time between the moment I gain controls over stick and the moment it reached destination without taking damage, BUT I hit the walls while inside safe (starting) area to adjust my position, and that really helps. Grassland-1 time: 0'05"78 on timer (record time: 0'05"76, one frame faster, but I believe that was gained by waiting in the start area, and that adds unneceseary play time). I hit the wall twice while in start area to aviod waiting at the end of the level. I could not get 0'05'76 or less no matter how hard I tried(~10 different attempts), my path seems to be optimal. Grassland-2 time: 0'10"78 on timer (record time: 0'10'83). Once again no waiting at the start, but position is adjusted by hitting wall in the safe area. I've got this result on second attempt and I find it pretty good. Maybe few frames can be cut off. EDIT: Yay, microstorage works again, and here is movie file: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/3332/kuru1-2.vbm

Are you sure hitting the walls are a good idea stylistically? I think it will look less bad to wait a while in the beginning instead. Also the +3 second penalty means your time isn't really 0'05'78.
