I recently saw this article in print: http://www.stuffmagazine.com/articles/html/article_707.html It's a list of five games that are "unbeatable," in the author's opinion. Personally, I would agree with the first item: Ultima IV. I owned that game for the Commodore 64 and played it for years and never got close to the finale. My buddy made it to the final dungeon (allegedly) but was slain and had to start over. He found this...discouraging.

Bah. Those I know Kid Icarus was beaten, as well as Blaster Master. Now where is BattleToads?

I completed Kid Icarus repeatedly when I was a kid. It is not one of the hundred hardest games I have played.

Blaster Master? Um... I've beaten that SO many times on my NES. Faster than Lezard, in fact :)

Well, I've only played Kid icarus and blaster master of those games, and I think both are beatable. How about Ikari warriors without ABBA (gives you 3 lives again, after you died).

LOL no cheating In fact my method doesn't use the grenade glitch It's just that Lezard missed a lot of the shortcuts that I know

Is Battle of Olympus a difficult game? I played it back then as a child and couldn't get far from start. Well,, maybe it had something to do with not understanding english? ;)

It's difficult, but more importantly very long. I'd estimate that a minimal completion takes at least 40 minutes, more likely something like 1.5 hours. Even more importantly, the physics in that game is somewhat clumsy and I don't recall seeing any glitches in the game. Meaning that a timeattack at this game wouldn't provide many surprises. The game is not "impossible" - I have beated it on a real NES.

hmm... I'd beaten Ikari Warriors ... 2 and 3. I don't remember if I beat 1 or not. Games that rank high on my "unbeatable" list are those that simply require onerous amounts of playtime in difficult situations... Shingen the Ruler, for instance. You begin the game with three powerful warlords nearby. If you ever do an auto-combat against an enemy army with a power more than 1/2 your own, you'll start taking massive casualties (which means, instead, you have to play every battle manually. that's a painful experience.) The Immortal strikes me as another really tedious and long game. Everyone says Deadly Towers is a terrible game, but if you know where not to step, it's ALMOST an okay game.. that's another one of those I'd consider "unbeatable".. certainly moreso than Kid Icarus or Blaster Master.

I remember Solar Jetman. The last planet was so huge. It took me more than an hour to finish it. Only to discover the worst part of the game : the escape mini-game. A single death and the entire level was to start over. Even if you had stocked 4 extra live. I never saw the ending.

Those games are beatable. Battletoads and Dragons Lair however I see impossible to beat on a real NES. Dragons Lair is the hardest and stupidest game I've played.

I remember the games Low G man. And most of the simpsons games but those where just hard because of the crappy controls.

Low G Man is beatable.. I own the game. I've also finished two of the Simpsons NES games.. and I've only played two of them.

heh, i can't believe blaster master is up there. It's not really that hard...just freakin long as hell, and the Crabullus boss is a punk. Kid Icarus too! I know I beat it at least once without ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS.

Wizards & Warriors II. I would LOVE to see someone beat this on a real NES, without passwords. Even using passwords I never quite beat it...got to the last bosses but that was it. -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

In my experience, W&W2 was the easiest in the series.. because I could beat it but not 1 or 3 >.<

The first Wizards and Warriors is one of those games that takes more patience than skill, seeing as continues take away only your score and nothing else. :P

Did he say Kid Icarus has limited continues? No it doesn't. Ikaruga though... that game is rough, I would love to see a completion video of that game! I say Battletoads should be on there, that game is a KILLER, of course I have seen it beaten on this site, but of all the games I played, thatw as it.

Ikaruga is an interesting game, and in my opinion, one of the most finely crafted. It is not hard, in particular. It's relatively easy to beat the game without continuing by never firing a bullet. What separates Ikaruga from the rest of the games out there is that it's exceptionally hard to play well.

I'd like to add 'Toki' on hardest mode to that impossible game list. With major slowdown and loads of save/load states, I couldn't even get past the first few screens.

Oh goddess, I remember Toki. I actually think I got rather far in it (on the lowest difficulty) but damn if I can remember just how far. Oh, wait. There's an invincibility code. Okay. That's probably how I got so far.

A game that should be on that list is UFO: enemy unknown. That game is nearly impossible to defeat without using save/load extensively... on beginner difficulty! (There are many difficulty levels...)
