Alisia Dragoon is a game about a girl that shoots lightning from her hands. It is a relatively obscure game that I luckily got to beta test when I was about 11 or 12 years old (I'm 25 now!). Alisia's lightning is used in two ways: -Normal Attack. When held down, lightning will shoot from Alisia's hands and attack any enemy she is facing. When facing multiple enemies, the lightning will focus on each enemy for a split second, dealing less damage when more enemies are being attacked. When held down, her magic meter will deplete, and when empty, she cannot attack. -Rolling Thunder. Alisia's magic meter will rapidly regenerate when not attacking. The last three bars slowly regenerate, however. When the meter is completely full, attacking will use Rolling Thunder, which will cause Alisia to release two very powerful lightning bolts that sweep back and forth, attacking anything in sight. Lightning's damage level can be raised by collecting power-ups. These are usually hidden, or at least out of the way. In addition to her magic, Alisia has four monster pets. Only one may be active at a time. They can be upgraded individually twice by collecting a power-up. -Dragon. Attacks by shooting a fireball forward. Attacks for good damage at a decent rate of fire. Additional levels add an extra fireball each. -Thunder Raven. Attacks all enemies in sight with a flash attack. Attacks for good damage, the the rate of fire is very long. Additional levels raise the damage dealt by its attack. -Ball O' Fire. This monster has no attack. When enemies come in contact with it they will take damage. It's attack meter is depleted when hit, instead of life. When its attack meter is empty, it will start taking damage. Useful for defending Alisia's rear. -Boomerang Lizard. Attacks by shooting a boomerang from its back, which travels forward in an arc, and then comes back. Attacks for low damage, but has the fastest attack rate. Additional levels add an extra boomerang each. This game is quite fun and extremely difficult. It's a very unique platformer. Anyways, I've been wanting to time attack this game for a long time, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing it. I made a run to end of stage 5 a long time ago, before I even began working on my 100% Metroid run. I'm posting it to show what this game looks like and as a small preview. I would love to see a run of this game. Count me as one of the three people who played this game. Like you said, it's a very interesting platformer. I can't get your gmv to work. It always desyncs on the second area of the first stage. I tried both movie test 9 and 9c, and messing around with the system settings (ntsc and pal). Is there anything else I need to know? Also, why the E version? Why not the JU version? The thirty seconds or so I saw so far looked good. I thought it would be too hard to maintain constant forward movement in this game, but you do know there is a hard mode right?

I guess that would make me the third person to play this game, as well as being interested in a run. Sadly, it also desyncs for me in the second area of the first level.

The E version was the only version I could find at the time I had recorded this. I got it to work in 9c, so that's not an issue. Here's the relevant settings, I think. Auto region(USA) Sound - 22050 6 buttons If that doesn't work, here's a working Gens.cfg file: http://www.jx3.net/tdg/Zoi/Gens.cfg

Yeah, it was the sound in my case too. I also really like it, but do you think collecting all of the lightning powerups and leveling up all the familiars is necessary? I know you need powerups and familiars to take down bosses fast, but is it worth it to collect them the first chance you get?

I'm playing it on hard this time around. I'm having trouble deciding on which monster to keep out. I can use Dragon and not slow down on 1-1, but he's practically useless on 1-2. I'm thinking Boomerang Lizard will probably prove most useful. Thunder Raven's attack just takes too long to come, and is sometimes wasted on only one or two enemies. Switching takes 54 frames, plus 10 frames each time you scroll (ie: going from Dragon to Thunder Raven takes 74 frames). I'm also not sure if it's faster to get the lightning power ups or not. I know in a normal playthrough it's suicide not to get them. Boss fights will be longer, but I'm not sure if it's worth the time. [edit]I'm glad you both liked it. I liked it. Record it at 44 instead. That is standard now so you wont have to go trough this trouble again when you submit it. I looked for about 30 minutes last night for that site, as I had lost my bookmarks a while back. (It's all screwed up in Firefox... have to break out IE. Meh.) Thanks! I'm using 44k this time around, as well as using the JU ROM. I'll post up a preview after each zone probably. I'm almost done with 1-2 right now. Just finished 1-3. I still haven't taken any lighting or monster power-ups, as they've all been out of the way. [Edit]Finished stage 2. Boss fight was slower than before, but I'm still up 40 seconds. The autoselector takes an inefficient path when choosing NONE for the demos (both middle and first boss). Can you do it faster yourself just before the demo? The first boss: the right one seems to spawn first. Can you have the familiar blast him once before frying the left one that drops down? Can you jump to start hitting the left boss earlier? I'm curious about your new idea of course, but I guess I'll have to wait.

You're probably right about all of these. I'll definately test them when I get back to the run. Thanks for the feedback. I often overlook stuff. =)

The lightning powerup is a must for this game, or else the later bosses will be near impossible to kill. Heck, you won't be able to get near them without being hit a lot of times, since the later levels spawn a ridiculous amount of baddies - all of whom are very powerful, even if you are on your max level. There are two tricks you can do to kill bosses extremely fast. - Use the ball'o'fire. Get close to an enemy, and turn around - position yourself so the fireball goes to sit at the exact place where the boss is. The Ball O'fire does extreme amounts of damage, at all times, its attack power only controls how much damage it recieves when it is hit. - The Rolling Thunder. Let it charge up, go and take some damage, and move into the damage spot of the enemy you are facing. Then use the rolling blast. If you position yourself right, every part of the rolling blast will end up inside your enemy, since its hitbox overlaps the root of your thunder completely. But make sure that it overlaps at least your front blasts in case the enemy is not big enough (stage 2 boss). I didn't check your gmv files but with these tactics I can kill the first boss in 2 seconds flat, in real time battle, and the second boss before it enters its second loop.

Yup, I made a gmv a little while ago of this, it seems like it would be a great game to TAS, but it needs to definitely be tested for route planning (i.e. when to get Lightning powerups, and when to get animal powerups). It's very likely that you would need to collect every lightning powerup immediately, whenever possible, but as for the animal ones, you might get away with just sticking to maxing out the fireball. The only thing that bothers me is the boss of level 3 (the purple slugs on the airship). You can't reach them with your fireball buddy (not all of them at least), and so you would need to lightning the rest. I'm wondering if powering up the Dragon or Raven would help here. I'm leaning toward no, but I'm not too sure. I found many addresses that display HP values, if anyone would like them. Also, there's an insta-kill for the skeleton pterodactyl thing in the cliff level that's worth a mention. Oh right, here's the GMV

It would be wise to miss out the powerups that require huge detours, since there are plenty you can grab on normal routes as well. You can still get up to 5-6 level by the endgame, which should be enough if you keep using rolling blasts and the ballofire. I think. Depends on what difficulty you play, on hard mode the enemies do ridiculous damage (touching a boss = one bar of life, iirc). I have no idea how you could speed up the final boss, Baldour. Maybe if you find out his weakpoint, you could rolling blast it. But, there are too many little pieces of shit flying around, so you'd bleed out way too fast using a suicide tactic - which you will require for the rolling blasts, since he is flying around and covered in lots of junk you have to blast off. His mage, Ornah, should be incredibly easy though, since a rolling blast almost completely drains his HP. For the level 3 boss, I use the Dragon since it fires straight forward, recharges fast, and does stupid amounts of damage when it hits. The Raven does more damage but recharges much slower, which is a liability if the enemy just pops back to his shield when the Raven fires. For normal gameplay the Boomerang Lizard is the most useful, it attacks often, and its small enough to not get hit often. Of course, this is not normal gameplay... Do note that I never made tool assisted runs, so I'm speaking from regular gameplay experience here. If you have problems with the level 3 boss, you'll have hell of a time with the level 7 one, unless you find a pattern to dodge the mini-priests. I never could, so I used rolling blasts on the mini priests (takes out 2-4 of them depending on how well I can target, the remaining ones either die fast enough from normal fire afterwards, or I can asily dodge their attacks), and when the boss appeared I hit him twice with the fireball and dodged. As long as the fireball didnt get hit, this tactic worked, albeit it takes some 10 minutes to finish the boss this way.

Also, I can make a list of hidden powerups in the game if you need one. There are a few ridiculously hidden ones, especially on Stage 5 (you can jump into one of the firepits to find a hidden chamber with invincibility, for example). Stage 5 also has a lot of lightning levelups.

Ah, I was going to ask, but I just figured someone would just put up a link to GameFAQs and tell me to find them myself :P Also, is the maximum Lightning level 8? Finally, I found these videos, which should be helpful (also an amazing watch, considering he plays on Hard and DOESN'T GET HIT): Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 With Boss insta-killage! Stage 4 Stage 5 Stage 6 Stage 7 Stage 8 Oh, I also have to test out using turbo with the lightning some more. I'm pretty sure it never runs out if you turbo, but I'm not sure if it does half as much damage over any given period of time. One thing I would like to do is whip up a comparison list. It would be easy to find out how many frames it takes to collect each of the upgrades. Then you could find out how long each boss takes with differing levels of lightning, and compare the two lists to get an optimal route. Only problem is, it would be no small task to test each boss with differing levels of lightning. Unless you found a memory address that you could change to adjust your lightning level, which, so far, I have yet to find.

I know you can max out the lightning, and it wouldn't surprise me if 8 is the max, but it's been a while since I last played the game.

Max lightning level is 8, note how they are also color grouped (blue, red, yellow, silver, then repeat with darker tones). Also, there are more then 8 powerups in the game, but after lvl8 you cant gain more levels. There is a cheat code for levelling up your lightning and skipping stages, you can use that for testing boss times. Check the Tips page on the fansite mentioned above. I don't know how complete the guides at gamefaqs are, I mean I just found out a secret spot on stage 2 just by watching those youtube movies you linked. There are some insanely secret spots in this game! Nice way for instakilling the 4th boss though, I didn't think it would be possible to carry up that powerup to the boss. Also, I think you face less enemies on your way up if you don't kill the earth-digging-monster at the bottom (but that also means no rolling blast powerup).

Hah! I hadn't even thought of using the cheat code! I guess this is a classic case of thinking too hard about things. I'll begin planning a route when I finish DKC3 in the next few days.

Here are the hidden powerups and boss tactics for stage 1 to 3. Stage 4+ are huge labyrinths so I'm not sure how I will write info about those. Stage 1-2 - as you enter, on the right ledge, above sight. (Monster Level) - just below that, on the second ledge, you can go behind the pillars with a jump. Note that you can exit the area by falling down on the left side directly, instead of tracking back to the right. (Monster Level & Food) - 3rd ledge on the right: Make sure you hold Lightning while jumping if you want to get this, since a badguy pops and hits you mid-jump. There is no way to backtrack here. (Continue item) - 4th ledge on the right: You can climb the second pillar with high jumps (Monster Level) - In this very chamber, theres a hole on the upper right corner. (Lightning Up, HP Up) Stage 1-3 - as you enter, straight walk to the right side, ignoring the stairs (HP Up) - After you climbed the stairs, theres a detour to the far left, filled with gargoyles (Lightning Up) - Once you are on the other side of the building, go back to the building, you can destroy the wall with your rolling blast on the upper level of it (HP refill) - On the lower floor, move to the left, next to the wall as possible, an extra item will turn up (HP refill) - Move to the right from this spot for 3 more items. Watch out, as you move to pick them up, boulder-droppers appear above you. (Monster Level) - Take the upmost route and theres a hidden location above the boss pit (Monster Level) - Boss tactic: move to the far right, turn around so you face to the left. Have the Ball O'Fire selected. As the boss comes in, move left so the fireball is positioned EXACTLY overlapping the boss - this should kill the boss in 2 hits if the ball o'fire is lvl3. Then move to the left, as close to the other boss as possible, and use the rolling blast directly in its face - it should die instantly as well (lvl3 lightning). Stage 2 - As you enter, move to the left corner, there is a hidden item box (invincibility) - In the Sea Lizard pit, there is one hiddem item in the leftmost corner, and one hidden item in the right side (but not as far as the right corner). (HP refill and Monster refill each) - Additionally the Sea Lizard can be defeated on its very first pass, if you do a well timed Rolling blast in its face, with the Thunder Lizard helping out (you need high levels for this, I can barely get it done on lvl3 lightning and lvl2 thunder lizard) - Right after the fairy platform, there is an extra item hidden above sight (Continue) - There is one Monster Level item directly on your route. - At the second Saucer attack (the one guy that comes in alone), you can ride his saucer to reach a hidden spot. - Once the saucer guys come in, you can drop into the pit for extra items on the far right (HP Up and Monster Revive). You can exit via platforms on the far left, which also has a HP Refill. The pit is filled by tons of frogs. - Boss tactic: Move as close as possible (you can almost overlap its mouth) and use a rolling blast when it opens its mouth. You'll need to duck in the middle of this, or you will get hit, and the hit stun will make you miss the rest of the rolling blast. If you can get the full rolling blast in its face uninterrupted, it will die INSTANTLY. Failing this, if the Thunder Lizard manages to fire as the boss has its mouth open, it should die the 2nd time it opens its mouth. (lvl3 lightning, much easier with lvl4) Stage 3 (note: this battleship is titled "Barunga") - Once you cleared the turret area and killed the saucer guy, don't go up. Move to the far left, back to the engine (Monster Level, Revive) - Once you moved to the main levels, above the HP refills there is an extra item (Monster Level) - Directly above you in the same location, another item is hidden above sight (Infinity Lightning) - On the main levels, on the lower left corner, there is a hidden item, you may need to jump for it to appear (Continue) - There is a Lightning Up item directly in your route as you jump up on the left side. - Directly left to the Lightning Up, there is a hidden item (Monster Refill) - Boss tactic: ???? I don't know how to insta-kill this boss. The middle horseface can be killed with a rolling blast instantly, but the other two are too far away for this to work. The dragon does a remarkable job at killing them though.Move to the rightmost corner and turn left, the dragon will automatically fire to the other way, and this way its close enough so all 3 of its fireballs hit the horseface thing. If all 3 fireballs hit, it takes 2-3 salvos to kill one of the horseface things. This leaves the one on the far left, no clue whats the fastest way to kill that one.

Ok, so here's what the first boss fight looks like with Alisia and the Fireball at full power: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmD2qILJZG8 I discovered that the fireball takes away 100 HP per frame from the bosses no matter what level it's at (making me wonder what point there is in leveling the thing up). At lightning level 1, the rolling blast still does massive damage to the boss. It doesn't kill the second guy outright, but it comes close. So even with Alisia at level 1 and the Fireball at level 1, the boss is only 42 frames longer. This means that the fastest way through the first level is to ignore all powerups. However, I don't know yet if avoiding all powerups has any repercussions on later gameplay (probably)
