What is your aim? Like how fast do you want to herd the goats? Would it matter at what frame you enter the area or is it too soon for you to establish what variables manipulates desired outcome?

I don't think any luck manipulation needs to be done before it starts. My best time so far is 15.33, which beats the real time WR by .11 secs, but it can definitely be done in under 15 seconds. I spent around .4 seconds waiting for the last goat, which is definitely avoidable by getting more of them inside the barn sooner. It's just a huge pain in the ass to get them to cooperate.

This is one of the hardest part of the game depending on how thorough and optimized you want your run to be. Once it's over, I am sure you'll progress easier. Hang in there rog :)

I think i'm done with these goats. This is a huge waste of time. I've already spent 15 hours on them, and the best i've got is 15.27. 10 hours ago i had a 15.33. I optimized the first half almost perfectly, and it still made almost no difference in the final time. Of the first 12 goats i pass, i get 11 of them directly into the barn right away, and the 12th runs to a perfect spot so i can get him later (it's impossible to get him into the barn at the start). And it doesn't even matter. It still ends up taking just as long for the remaining ones to go in as it did before. I don't think sub 15 is going to be realistic after all, and it's just not worth the time to keep redoing this just to save another frame or two. It's just way too difficult to optimize this. Also, wtf, the timer jumps up by .09 in a single frame at the end (the frame AFTER the last goat is counted) <_< Link to video

That definitely looks optimized rog. You should be proud and move on (I am not saying this just because I want you to hurry up, I genuinely feel it looks good).

This does seem to beat real time records by quite a bit. So yeah it's probably as good as possible. :) Nice work.

That looks great! I don't think you'll be able to optimize it any more. It's great you've progressed so far already, and I'll be watching your WIPs (if you decide to post them). I've been wanting to see a Goat Herding TAS for a while, so I'm glad it's finally been done, and with such an entertaining result! I like how the Goat Herding real-time record's "author's comments" contain the text "This is flawless and absolute perfection" when you just beat it by 0.16 second.

Honestly, i can't even imagine how he got 15.43 in real time. These goats do NOT cooperate. If your angle is even a little off it will frequently cause them to run off to nowhere, and make it impossible to get less than 20 seconds. If you hit A at the wrong frame, they'll casually stroll towards the barn, instead of running, again, making it impossible to get a decent time. And even if you get everything perfect, they very often will just refuse to enter the barn in a reasonable time. I've seen the tiniest of changes in angle at the very end turn a 15.33 into a 17.5. This wasn't too bad for tasing, since it only takes a minute to retry the last second a dozen or two times, but in real time, it'd be an absolute nightmare. I believe it took me around 2 hours just to tie his record, and 2-3 more to beat it.

I don't think you are doing justice to his comments, as he also speculates that a TAS may be able to do it in less than 15 seconds. He was clearly talking about an RTA, and even then it just seems to be a statement to provoke people to give it a try, as he also states it might be possible to get it down to a time of 15.20.

I'm excited that you're TASing this game, and it sounds like you just finished the most difficult part, so... hey. There you go. Perhaps in the future this game will see goat herding frame wars. Until then, though, you're probably okay to move forward. Do you have any ideas that you want to try that depart from the known routes or rely on tricks not realistically possible in real time? I know the Zelda tricking community broke this game pretty well, and I don't remember reading anything about possible TAS-only strategies...

I haven't really looked into it yet. There are a few small things i plan on trying, but nothing significant. So far i've done up to where you first become a wolf. There definitely should be no way to improve the route before the forest temple, so i plan to do that, and then investigate possible changes as i go. If you have any suggestions, i'd love to hear them.

I'm not an expert anywhere near the level of active members of the speedrunning community--I just lurk the forums where such things are discussed and try to keep up as best I can with new runs. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can lend suggestions, but I'll go through the forums as best I can and see what I find. I wonder where clipping or wall-climbing might be useful in a TAS when it isn't realistic in real time--we already use the wolf jumps for EMS and outside Arbiter's Grounds, I think, and clipping to skip Zora's Armor. I know there'd been discussion about getting the normal bombs to blow up the blockage in Zora's Domain (someone had figured out how to drop them in water, but they weren't able to push the bombs near the spike). I'm going to try not to backseat drive here. I hate it when people do that. I have a high-end PC so let me know if you'd like me to test anything that gives you trouble, and if I come up with any good ideas I'll give them a go myself, as time permits.

Just to be safe, have you watched Paraxade's run? I'm not up to the TP speedrunning, but since the earlier parts are really old there's some chance new route's been found.

As well as ing-x's RTA done a few weeks ago, yes.

Hah. Is that based on 60fps (0.25s) or 30fps (0.5s)?

Looks really good so far. I'm excited to see more. It's clear that you've put effort into finding small time savers here and there. Such as the jumps in faron that you posted, and the jump-slash at 3:47 in the video. Not to be an ass, though, but are you sure that all of the rolling and angles were optimal? It seems as though a lot of the corners and paths could have been taken much tighter. You find a timesaver to bypass Midna that saves 15 frames, although it looks to me like more than 15 frames can be takes off by simply taking corners tighter. Also, at 0:55 in the video, it seems that throwing the rock, then rolling towards the gate would be faster than carrying it the whole way, since obviously link can move faster without a giant rock above his head. :P

Throwing the rock makes it break into rupees so that wouldn't help. Only if it's thrown against a wall, so never mind. It's been years since I've played :/ Edit after watching: I also feel that the rolling doesn't look optimal due to the fact that some wide areas are traversed in a not-perfectly-straight way, and corners and edges (e.g. It didin't look like you were constantly one degree away from falling off the spiral staircase going up from the sewers) aren't hugged enough. If hugging edges and making tight turns around corners makes the camera do ugly things, the C-stick can help. But overall, it's enjoyable, thanks for the WIP!

I don't think it does. This isn't OoT. In TP the rupee actually pops out from under the rock after you pick it up, not after you break it. Anyway, I watched it. Pretty awesome start :o But nowhere near optimal yet, I noticed quite a few improvements. Do you want me to point all of them out or is this not intended to be totally optimal? And by the way, there actually is some luck manipulation involved in goat herding before it starts. The goats will start facing different directions which changes which way they go when you start to herd them. edit: Oh and those midna jump skips were amazing. I can't wait to see if there's any other tricks similar to that.

The rocks will only break if you throw them into a wall. Go test it.
