I just checked and it turns out the level 17 Onix does indeed have enough of an experience yield to level up Mew to level 10. I'm not sure if 2 normal Water Guns can knock out Onix with max DV's, but one critical hit and a normal hit is enough to do the job. Since you have to pass this Onix anyway, this works out well to give Mew Tnansform.

What good is Transform for this purpose on your own Pokemon? It's the opponent's special that you draw from in battle manipulation.

The point is to have Transform so that an enemy can use it with Mirror Move, to see if this is faster than getting to an encounter with a Ditto. Enemy goes first, we use transform, it fails, we switch to a pokemon we want, the enemy uses mirror move and does transform. The enemy using Transform means they borrow the special of a pokemon we switch to.

IIRC, Primo's first published TAS of this game fought this Onyx with Mew, too. I forget how it worked out, though.

No need for mirror move ditto guys, ok maybe..., the wild alternative is at pokemon tower 5F, mirror move is closer (gary at 2F) but your lvl 100 has to lose to his fearow. About mew getting to 10, remember mew doesn't have to fight, it requires 324 exp, which means any pkmn that gives 648+ will do. The lvl 20 butterfree (which could be used while skipping snorlax) gives 685. Kadabra or Gyarados would be easily poisoned on the switch and help on fainting the lvl 100 pkmn vs gary's fearow.

A little question, I was checking fractal fusion's yellow run on both VBA v19 and v20 and the frames differ, ie. on v19 he exits the copyright screen at frame 251, and on v20 it is at frame 260, so 9 frames diff. Then the game freak intro has the same issue, but this time is it 10 frames difference. And then the game's logo exit is at 17 frames difference. So which one of the vbas is wrong. EDIT: forget it I left it playing and it completely desynched on v20

v19 is 'wrong' for classic gameboy/colour titles.
Voted NO for NO reason

Is there a way to get out of cerulean without going to bill's house? or disable the trainers on the way? In case not, what do you think is faster, climbing to the sixth floor of Pokemon Tower to battle a wild pokemon (getting to lavender wastes no time) or getting the cascade badge + ss anne for cut, I guess cut cant be skipped EDIT: Oh forgot you need silph scope to catch wild pokemon at pkmn tower...

This has probably been brought up before but I'm not searching through 39 pages to check... Is it possible to trade Pokémon between games with VirtualBoy? Because if it is, you could possibly raise and trade a Pokémon that knows Cut to the main game that's being recorded after Misty has been defeated so that you could simply cut down that tree at the south end of the city without having to go to Bill's place to move that policeman out of your way. You also don't have to go to SS Anne to get the HM for Cut. There's probably other ideas for other HMs too...
Why, oh, why do I even try to understand my own species?

TGB Dual can link games, or you can do it through project64 + pokemon stadium, theres also a vba link version, I dont know if it works for this and I dont think it has re-recording. And if you were to do that, the time it took to start the other game, get the pokemon with cut and trade would be added I guess. Found out that when scrolling dialogs that have no "arrow" its faster to release than to press. So instead of having only A the first possible frame, you have to press B the frame before, and then A the actual frame (it seems the game doesnt care what you release). You seem to get almost a frame (a fraction), so just removing one frame of the following data wont synch your movie (it will desynch sometime later). In the following frames where it looks like you didnt "gain" 1 frame after doing BA, you have to do AB instead and you'll get another frame, repeat during all your movie to get extra frames. Didn't check if it works for movement (edit: doesnt look like so).

The problem with trading from another game is that you would either need a predefined save (which would put a run doing so into the same category as the New Game+ run for Chrono Trigger) or you'd need to play the second game from the beginning too, which (from what I can work out) would defeat the point.

The second game doesn't have to be recorded (I hope) so I don't think it would count toward the time.

Or maybe run both at the same time a la the Megaman runs.

That actually sounds pretty interesting, Red and Blue side by side. You'd still have to finish the game with both of them, but if division of labor helps to speed it up it could be a really interesting ploy. Of course the problem is that the link cable probably isn't supported in VBM movies, not to mention you'd have to specify somehow that each movie is connecting to the other. Setting up the link in the movie is probably impossible unless someone seriously mods VBA for it.

I know there's a version of VBA with link cable functionality, but it's also not the version with the TAS tools.

I got into this with pokemon yellow so I finished a tas of it instead of red or blue, its also more colorful. I guess I will be submitting it unless you got a good objection to the route. Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr3L597dZFM&fmt=18 _

Far out. Take that video off YouTube, or at least stop claiming that it is a TAS. Clearly you know nothing about TASes. GameSharks are NOT used. You see, the point of a TAS is to show optimal play that could still technically be performed by a human. Luck manipulation, frame-perfect button-presses, stuff like that. I am sure that many, many people will get the wrong idea about TASes if they watch that movie, and will think of them as merely "cheating movies". Don't dirty the name of the runs we love so much. And perhaps read some sort of guide on what is and what is not acceptable in a run the next time you go for a submission. EDIT: Also, just so no one gets angry with me, I'm not trying to get all high-and-mighty here. And yes, I know I haven't submitted any runs myself. I'm still sure that what I say in this post is right. Just look at the comments on the page. "BEST TAS EVER" etc. Giving people the wrong ideas. I'm not trying to start a flame, or otherwise, war. Cheers, Franklint

The first part of the description (where it mentions gamesharking) is a joke description, just to be clear about that. Is your main concern that the "joke description" of gamesharking may be taken seriously by users of YouTube?

Thankyou, mike89. And yes, FractalFusion. Call me stupid if you wish, but, not being a Pokémon Yellow TAS avid follower (just like 99.999% of YouTubers), I had no way to know that the TAS was not GameSharked. It certainly looked it, and the description gave me the impression the author assumed that such things were acceptable in a TAS. I'd say definitely either put a disclaimer that tells people that the TAS is, indeed, legitimate, or remove the GameShark mentions entirely. Also, I think that your run will seem much less impressive if people think you've GameSharked it, which can't be good for you. I feel almost positive that many people are going to get the wrong impression from this video and the description if nothing's changed. Maybe I'm over-reacting and unintelligent not to pick up the jokes in the text. Now that that's sorted, great movie! :) It really is amazing how some games get absolutely smashed with TAS resources. I'd say submit it. Cheers, Franklint

Nah, first, people that don't read won't see anything about gameshark because that stuff is hidden under "More", they will just check the title and will probably think that TAS guy is famous, as there's a lot of movies by him. Those that read but fail at it (several causes) will fail to read the disclaimer just like they failed to read the rest of the comments. I suppose I could change it to Stupid Description just like I did here.
