But the Charmander pokemon will be strong against other bosses later in the game, right? You could use non-fire elemental attacks vs. the first and second gym leader. (Sorry, I don't play pokemon that much, I played it yesterday to try the catch any pokemon glitch, and I've played it a couple of times before, but I don't know as much about later gym leaders.)

Well, not exactly. There are a few combinations of types that just don't work: ele-gnd, psi-drk, fig-gho, gho-nor, gnd-fly, nor-gho, psn-ste These pairs don't do any damage at all, even if you have perfect luck.

Charmander is not good against the 2 first gyms (thought ember works against brock, blame the bad special, and normals work against misty), dig is good against the 3rd, 4th is easy win, Koga is not hard, Sabrina is "hard" with everything, 7th is dig-fest and the last is ground-type, probably just another dig-fest. Charmander is pretty bad, as fire-type is not that good in RBY.

Comparison chart, for anyone interested, and not sure if Squirtle really is the best option for a TAS of Pokemon: Things that Squirtle defeats easily: - Gym 1 (Bubble) - Gym 3 (Dig) - Gym 4 (Ice Beam) - Gym 5 (Dig) - Gym 7 (Surf) - Gym 8 (Surf) - Elite Four's Agatha (Dig) - Elite Four's Lance (Ice Beam) Things that Squirtle has problems with: - Rival's Gyaradoses - Elite Four's Lorelei --- Things that Charmander defeats easily: - Gym 3 (Dig) - Gym 4 (Ember/Dig) - Gym 5 (Dig) - Gym 8 (Dig) - Elite Four's Bruno (Fly?) - Elite Four's Agatha (Dig) Things that Charmander has problems with: - Gym 1 - Rival's Squirtles/Wartortles/Blastoises (high physical defense, and fire moves are not effective vs it) - Elite Four's Lance (many Pokemon he uses are Flying, and all are resistant to fire) --- Things that Bulbasaur defeats easily: - Gym 1 (Vine Whip, but this requires lv13, not really suitable for a TAS) - Gym 2 (Vine Whip) - Gym 8 (Razor Leaf) - Elite Four's Lorelei (Razor Leaf) Things that Bulbasaur has problems with: - Rival's Pidgeys/Pidgeottos/Pidgeots - Rival's Exeggcutes/Exeggutors - Rival's Charmanders/Charmeleons/Charizards - Gym 4 (Enemies are Grass type and thus resistant to Grass moves, and you won't have anything powerful physically at this point in time - Gym 5 (Grass attacks are also not effective vs Poison types) - Gym 7 (Ditto with Fire) - Elite Four's Agatha (everything is at least part Poison, see above) - Elite Four's Lance (especially the dragons)

Shouldn't it be easy (with Squirtle) to beat Gyaradoses with Ice Beam, since dragons are weak against ice? Or is Gyarados Water type pokemon?
Which run should I encode next? :)

I'm pretty sure the only actual Dragon types are Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite.

Okey, I just checked and Bag of Magic Food was right. The only dragon type pokemons are Dratini, Dragonair & Dragonite. Plus also Kindra (evolved form of Searda) but you can't find that in RBY, only in GSC. And what comes to Gyarados, it's Water/Flying. I must admit that flying part kinda surprised me.

You'd have Cut, which would do the job. Not that I think that Bulbasaur or Charmander have a chance at being faster than Squirtle. Especially since you'd need another Pokemon as a Surf slave, and nothing's really on path except possibly Lapras.
You can't teach Bulbasaur cut, right? And the guy who gives you the Lapras talks for like an hour before you get the pokémon, so I actually believe it's not even worth trying with another pokémon. You could always make a huge detour to capture yourself a level 7 Mew pokémon and teach it Psychic (I don't know if you can access that mans house in Saffron that early in the game though). Really, I'm just joking. (Do not take me seriously, I'm not as stupid as the later part of this post make me seem.)

Bulba does learn cut... And snorlax can learn surf.

I didn't know about Bulbasaur, but is it strong enough then? I've never used cut in combat.

Cut is only power 50. Alot of Grass types have high HP and high Defense, so good luck trying to Cut them to submission.

We can just use Body Slam. It is at least stronger than cut o_O

And sadly, it's the only physical move Bulba can learn that would be better. He has a horrible TM selection. He simply would not be effective in gym 4. If you'd picked up your Fly slave by then, you'd be best off using them. Looking at Bulba's list, he can't learn Dig either. No way would he ever be faster than Squirtle.

I mean, Squirtle's got attacks that deal extra damage for 6 of 8 gyms or something like that, and no other pokémon fast enough to get is as versatile.

Wow. Great movie Tilus, that makes the first game completed...and prefretable the one that started it all.

And just when I thought I had moved past this game.. think again! I went browsing about the same site posted in the Star Ocean topic and checked up on the Japanese Pokemon records.. and found that their record for Pokemon Red is - if I'm reading this right - 1 hour 18 minutes!!???! Apparently however there does seem to be some sort of trick involved, and they don't have a report link up so I can see how it works (or at least attempt to, what with my terrible 3 college semesters worth of "knowledge" of Japanese). They do however have a report link up for a 1 hour 59 minute run which apparently does not use this trick. Even taking into account that this is the Japanese version and is very likely as much as 15 minutes faster than the American version, that's a tad close for comfort, and wonder if there's some tricks the author used in that run that I didn't use in mine. Could any of the Japanese speakers browsing about these boards take a look at the site and give some clarification on some of the tricks being used in these Japanese runs of the game?

Yes, in that run he apparently used a link cable. You ran with fresh pokemon.

Oh, ha ha, just trade for all the Pokemon you need and then race to all the gyms? That's one way to win fast. VisualBoyAdvance doesn't support multiple Game Boys, though, does it?

http://vbalink.wz.cz/ but I don't think there's much point in combining that feature with rerecording.

Whew, should've known that that ridiculous time was through the usage of a link cable to trade high level Pokemon over.. now it definitely makes sense. XD I also spent some more time looking at the 1 hour 59 minute Japanese run, to hope to learn something new and find ways to improve my current run. And, sure enough, he's done some.. interesting tactical changes, some I like (and are kicking myself in the foot for not realizing myself), and others I don't really see the point of, at least not in the context of a speedrun. The general route he took appears to be primarily the same as the one I took through my run through Pokemon Blue, with the exception of not sequence breaking and doing Silph Co Tower/Saffron Gym before Pokemon Mansion/Cinnabar Gym.. no surprises there. He also went and beat the Cerulean Gym before even heading up through the Nugget Bridge Gauntlet.. a very interesting time to do it, that's for sure. However, the movesets he used were vastly different.. he made much greater usage of TMs than even I did. Here's the moves he used on Squirtle through his run: - Tackle (start) - Tail Whip (start) - Bubble (lv8) - Water Gun (lv15) - Mega Punch (picked up in Mt. Moon, replaces Tackle) <- I cannot believe I overlooked this; an 80 power Normal move this early in the game!? This will save massive amounts of time on the Nugget Bridge gauntlet, and is probably worth redoing the run just by itself - Bubblebeam (Won from beating Misty, replaces Bubble) - Dig (Won from Rocket who stole it, replaces Tail Whip) - Body Slam (Found on SS Anne, replaces Mega Punch) <- Huh!?!! Okay, maybe this makes sense from a real time timeattack perspective, since it has "perfect" accuracy compared to Mega Punch's 85%, but is definitely not worth it in a TAS (only 5 more power, and has 5 less PP) - Ice Beam (picked up in Celadon City, replaces Water Gun) - Surf (picked up in Safari Zone, replaces Bubblebeam) - Earthquake (picked up in Silph Co. Tower, replaces Dig) <- Already decided it's not worth it, and there goes your quick escape out of dungeons too (no, I'm not buying Escape Ropes) - Blizzard (picked up in Pokemon Mansion, replaces Ice Beam) <- Hmm.. very doubtful this is worth it. Might merit some research, however. - Strength (picked up in Fuchsia City, replaces Body Slam) <- Instead of me, who uses the HM right away, he waits until just before the final dungeon to use it. Definitely not a good idea to wait, though, if I don't bother with Body Slam - Fissure (won from Giovanni, replaces Earthquake) <- This is really the one decision that has bothered me about my run before I ran into this walkthrough, I'll definitely have to test it out. This probably is enough to get me to do the run over again.. if I do, I'll start back up on it shortly (which likely means I'm going to leave FF4 to someone who better knows what they're doing).. I might want to do a bit more investigation into this guy's strategy before I officially start again, though.

in this same website it is written:

So VBALink only works with GBA games. Oh well. There's really not much point to supporting link cable runs anyway, because they make Pokemon runs way too easy. Though I'm interested in the Pokemon Gold run on the Japanese site. 2:21+3:10=5:31 No links, though.
