Superfast Mario Bros. 2 is a ROM hack for SMB 2 created by Acmlm. The speed of most objects, as well as players, increases to ridiculous levels, with notable changes including:
  • All characters have a maximum horizontal speed of 127 for right and 128 for left. In the original, each character has their own unique abilities: Mario has averages stats, Luigi can jump high but his vertical and horizontal speed is a bit slower than the others, Toad has the fastest speed but is weak at jumping, and Princess has the weakest speed and power but can stay airborne longer than the others while pressing the A. In this hack, however, the x speed is the same for all characters, so these differences are irrelevant. Also, the vertical speed has only been changed for Mario, and the rest of the characters are the same as the original.
  • Due to Mario's strangely changed y speed, his certain jumping pattern can ignore a few floors. So, if he has to fall from a high place for quite a while, it's faster for him to land once on the ground as high as possible and then jump and fall to the floor below.
  • Climbing a ladder with U+D input is slower than climbing it normally with U input.
  • You can enter a door (except for the Mask Gate) while holding an object, as well as a keys. This helps by allowing you to fight bosses faster with enemies or vegetables instead of the eggs that Birdos shoot.
  • Instead of Birdos' eggs, if you hit them with an enemy or vegetable, it only takes one hit to kill.
  • If you enter a door at maximum speed in the opposite direction from where you were going, you can do a wrong warp on the next screen.
Note that, to my knowledge, the 5-3 boss cannot be defeated by any method, so warpless run would be impossible. Clawglip throws rocks to the player and you have to catch them to fight the boss, but in this ROM hack, he's become a fool and doesn't do anything but move from side to side. Although you can think of other ways to fight the boss, but you can't go through the Mask Gate while holding something, and the Power Star doesn't last long enough to get you to the final room. Here's a demo movie of me playing rough up to 5-3. You can check it out for yourself: https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638159481655030136

Level comments

1-1: I chose a similar route to the original game's TAS strategy: despite almost all objects being faster, the period of the Power Star hasn't changed, so you have plenty of time to grab the Power Star and reach Birdo.
6-1: Cobrat's spitting rocks have the same speed as Mario's running, which would occupy a lot of sprites on the screen, so we can prevent lag by throwing it off the screen.
In the room where you are picking up a key buried in the sand, it's faster to jump through the ground than to dig down the sand.
6-3: Mario's jump can't go over the ceiling, so he has to go under the sand.
7-2: This is the level where Mario's break-through-the-floor jumping come in handy. Doing so saves you time picking up the key by not having to go further to where the ladder is.
Wart gets attacked by 6 vegetables and meets his end. And finally Mario rescues Subcon from the forces of evil in 2 minutes and 4 seconds...

ThunderAxe31: Gotta judge fast!! Again!!! Our crave for speed never ends!!!!
ThunderAxe31: I'm un-claiming this to make the judging even faster.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Updating the file with a resync that works on the fixed patch, and accepting.

despoa: Processing...

Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

The boss does not throw rocks at you, but in this video it does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuOOz6iJsRo&t=1106s Maybe we need to ask acmlm?

I recalled that a similar crash was seen in Suerfast Zelda, which was only playable if it was patched in Rev A. The ROM used in this submission was patched in PRG 0. I tried patching it in several other versions, including PRG 1, Rev 0, and Rev 1, but all of them either failed to pass the first door or had the same issue at 5-3. I'm also wondering if he knows the solution.

I asked, he said "yeah I did some fixes for the warpless run (mostly bosses weren't throwing things)". I asked him to upload the new version to http://acmlm.rustedlogic.net/ips/

acmlm uploaded the new version to http://acmlm.rustedlogic.net/ips/SMB2fast.ips (the old one is still available at http://acmlm.rustedlogic.net/ips/SMB2fast1.ips) but it desyncs.

The main difference is Mouser throwing a lot of bombs, Clawgrip throwing a lot of rocks, faster death and bonus chance win, and a softlock fix. Superfast SMB3 warpless is still broken, entering any ship will softlock in infinite scrolling. Superfast SMB2J slowly corrupts graphics but otherwise should work. Zelda1fast is fully playable.
I want to send the updated file to RHDN, but then the only way to sync this submission would be to grab it from his site again, and we can't know how long it remains available. chatterbox, can you check why the new file desyncs and say how hard it would be to resync on it?

I noticed the movie is not synced in the new patch (when using the ladder glitch in 1-1 cave), and I'm not exactly sure what the technical reason is. Trying every possible combination of inputs and using different characters didn't solve the issue, and I found that the same bug occurred in all other ladders, not just the one in the movie that was desynced. So I made a new run with a revised route for 1-1 for now. Although the record is slower as a result, but I think this is a more truthful record as more accurate patch became available. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638190750274557357

Thanks! Indeed it syncs, will replace the submission once RHDN accepts my patch update.

Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube. Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)
