nymx: Hello TateTF20230623 and welcome to TAS Videos. You've picked a great game to start your TASing career, but the outcome isn't up to snuff like other Sonic runs that we have. Even though there is no other run on this site to compare this with, Asumeh has clearly shown that the optimization of your movie is nowhere near the quality that we seek for publication. Normally, I do ask authors to revisit their work, in case something can be done in a reasonable time, but I don't see that being the case here. This game has been heavily TASed and the mechanics exploited over the years. I've seen other TASes of Sonic, and even without Asumeh's video and comments...this still was pretty far behind the expectation of other sonic movies.
Remember...take your time...use the editing tools to their fullest...and don't rush. You might be surprised as what you can accomplish.

hello TateTF20230623 and welcome to TASVideos!
for your first TAS, this is quite well made. just a couple technical things to point out:
1. the re-record count is not the same as the frame count. it’s how many times you remove an unwanted input during the making of a TAS.
2. i noticed that you used “Gens” as your emulator. Gens isn’t preferred for emulating the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. instead, most of us like to use a multi-platform emulator called “BizHawk”. you can download it from this very website.
other than that, well done on your first submission, and good luck in the future!

Gens is the preferred emulator for the Sonic TASing community due to the amount of tools and resources that are behind that emulator.
There is no point for this gatekeeping on emulators when Gens is the objectively better emulator for the Sonic community.

Well... decent first attempt, Tate. But knowing about the hack years ago, I've also known about there being faster runs than this.
This is the fastest attempt that I could find:

Also, you've placed a Bilibili video in the YouTube encode section; therefore, the encode doesn't work properly and cannot be viewable directly on TASVideos.
As a former Sonic the Hedgehog TASer (sorry Sonic fans), I can tell you that this is a good attempt, but it definitely needs more work. Mostly on the optimization.
I could go on with a few extra key takeaways that I feel is worth mentioning, but that would pose the risk of me mini-modding, so I should probably end with a tip for you: work on improving your TASing capabilities for a while; make use of the emulator tools at your disposal, then submit if you're sure that your future runs are the best they could be. Don't be afraid to ask in places such as the forum or the TASVideos Discord server; you may also want to submit your runs to the Userfiles like most starter TASers. (I still do for almost all of my TASes because they're mainly ROM hacks.)
I'll let the judges take over the rest. For now, I'll be voting Meh on the entertainment, sorry!
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :)
Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like.
In progress:
- Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field.
- Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube.
Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)

We don't have a problem with users explaining correct things to other users.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
