Sega Genesis NHL Hockey fastest win by input lenght.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk
  • Win the game (Regular Mode)
  • Aims for fastest time (ends input as early as possible)
  • Manipulates luck (referee and opponent RNG)
The most important thing is to change the periods to 5 minutes.
In the main menu we can move cursor once per frame but need to wait between presses. During the wait frame we can press left or right without losing any time, so we have effectively 9 different team compositions to choose from while losing 0 frames. Changing the teams any more than that would lose 2 frames. Menuing affects the RNG, so some delay is needed for optimal gameplay.
This version of the game advances to the next period without any input, so we can make one goal in the first period immediately and then end input. Then we just hope that the opponent makes no goals during the rest of the game while we do null input.
In my understanding the perfect RNG setup is such that the referee drops the puck as early as possible while the game is also in a state that allows ending input early while delivering a goal. There are millions of possibilities. I could probably improve the run by a frame if I made another 20,000 rerecords, but I am exhaust. Even a simple game is revealed to be very complex. Much respect to tasers. I estimate that at least 4 frames can be saved with a bot that tests all possible combinations.
The RNG manipulation requires many successive frame perfect inputs, so this run is probably not replicable by humans using normal gamepads.
There is unknown possibility that the opponent makes a very convoluted own goal, so we might be able to end input immediately after starting the game. This would bring the completion time to mere seconds.
Thank you to tasvideos! Amazing site! Amazing people! Keep up the good work!

Darkman425: Claiming for judging.
Darkman425: Much like another hockey publication this one aims for a very early end to input to complete a hockey game. Even though this one does include having to actually shoot the puck into Minnesota's net to eventually win, the principle of letting the opponent try and fail to win by doing nothing thereafter is the same. I guess the North Stars didn't have good object permanence or something, if this game is to be believed.
Accepting to Standard.

This is brilliant, voting Yes. I love taking advantage of the "earliest input end" rule. I made a similar submission many years ago for Nintendo World Cup, but it only completed the first half of the game because it required input to advance past halftime. You found a game that can actually do a complete game of hockey with no input, and even managed to get into a hockey fight against the AI.

Hi, Chamale! More games that I know with very early input end possibility are: Genesis: Hit the Ice (U) Genesis: Hit the Ice (J) TurboGrafx: Hit the Ice TurboGrafx: TV Sports Hockey I am not going to do those. Hit the Ice is fun, though. I did some test runs on Hit the Ice, and the enemy often made 9 goals while our computer player only made 1, so it looks difficult to win without making at least 1 goal before ending input, but then again for Hit the Ice there are probably billions of different ways to seed the match while losing fever frames than it takes to make a goal. I did not study the team compositions in these games at all, so maybe there is some overpowered setting. The Genesis version allows changing period length to 2 minutes, so it becomes much easier to solve.

Thank you, RiTheMasher. Now that you are here, please make your own TAS of your favorite game. :) I think the maximum goals run would be a fun thing to see. I estimate that somewhere aroud 50 goals can be made per round, so a total of 150 goals. The goal counter glitches out at 100, but as far as I know this does not affect the game.
