This post is meant to gather feedback from the community as to what the future of movies made in FBA-rr should be.
For some background: Final Burn Alpha was the first Arcade emulator to have acceptable TAS movies made on the site. But it’s been somewhat infamous for having stability issues as the years go by.
Aside from crashing a-lot if you don’t run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode, some games have horrible sync reliability, which is especially the case for NeoGeo games. It is entirely up to chance if a NeoGeo game will have little to no sync issues, or the absolute worst case scenario. Runs may not be able to work at all unless you have specific conditions like running under a Window 7 virtual machine. Some runs might even need to rely on
Savestates just to force determinism. And in at least one case, the use of savestates lead to
lower audio quality.
The last FBA submission as of writing this post was
https://tasvideos.org/8150S , which was submitted less than a month before BizHawk released version 2.9, allowing the MAME core to be used. Since then, Bizhawk has been the primary emulator for Arcade runs.
Is there any thoughts the community has about the future of FBA-rr for Arcade TASing on TASVideos? Should the emulator still be accepted for submissions, or should it be moved to the “not accept at all” section?
