free? i dont see how that is relevant... press printscreen and save it in your favorite editor (paint if you must). he who's on a quest to claim rights to the jpg,gif,png or i think any fileformat at all, is wasting his time...

paint is not tolerable for screenshots. It messes up the palette and creates dithering where dithering does not belong to.

Before picking up the rocket, why did you touch the ground as you were falling? I haven't tested it yet, but I think it's faster to just keep going forward at full speed, just miss the corner as you're falling, and press left as you hit the wall to bounce back to the left.

I have tried a lot of way to do the fastest way as possible and when I jumped it was for slowing down the character because of that ice. The fact that I fall on the edge or not, does not change anything because I fall directly on the rocket

And remember to convert the image to 256 colors before saving to PNG. If you save it at full color (ie. 24 bits per pixel) the file size will usually be like 5-10 times larger than an equivalent 256-color version (I don't know exactly why, but that's what I have experimented). Since NES uses only 64 colors, you shouldn't be losing anything in the conversion (in fact, converting the image to 64 colors instead of 256 could theoretically be even better, but perhaps it's a good idea to use 256 instead in case the emulator adds more colors than 64 to the image for some reason). Just be sure to use a good image manipulation program to do the conversion (such as the Gimp). Some crappy programs will make a pretty poor job.

If you have 64 books, is it better to put them into a box that fits exactly 64 books, or to a box that fits exactly 256 books, when you are going to mail the box to someone and the pay is bigger when the box is bigger?

That's another advantage PNG has. GIF can only store 40 custom-defined colors. PNG's entire pallete is customisable for 256 or less colors.

That's not true. GIF's colour palette is entirely customisable. It's size can be 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 entries. But the good thing in PNG is that it is not limited to paletted images. It supports many different colour depths and also the alpha channel.

It's not a pretty good comparison.256 is better than 64 colors.At 64 colors you save like 1-2 ko.I think I will take the 256 book box.Genisto don't mind if it is 17ko or 15 ko.

Where do you think the extra colours come from? The ORIGINAL only has less than 64 colours! That's what I meant by "books". The palette is the "box".

Well, you're correct -- there is a selection of colors deemed web-safe (i.e. they should appear the same regardless of browser, os, and bit depth (assuming it's 8-bit or better)... but the GIF file format has existed much longer than any gui internet browser, and as such the 'web-safe' colors are just an optional selection, arbitrarily decided and "suggested" (although not required) for widespread usage.

I just watched it and it's good. By the way, have you been using the 60 fps hack? It might save you a few frames here and there, for example when you switch characters and when you enter doors. Edit: Before you start 6-1, I have a suggestion, and that way if you don't figure it out on your own you won't have to do the whole thing over. It probably saves at least 5 frames over Sleepz's video. Here's what the platforms in the jar looks like. The first picture shows how you should fall down through the jar. The second picture slows the slightly slower method that Sleepz used. ......../........ ..OO/...OO.. ...../........... ...\OOOO.... ....\............ OO.\......OO ..----/......... .\OO....OO.. ..\.............. ...\OOOO.... ....\............ OO.\......OO I also have another suggestion. While picking up layers of sand, you can make use of the "skip a row of sand glitch" on David Wonn's website, which saves time because walking off a shyguy takes less time than picking up sand. You can also make use of the double jump glitch to get out of the jar slightly faster once you have the key.

Yes, I uses it. This hack gives us a better control than the 20 fps. However, I have started using it from stage 4-1.. If I would start again, I would save about 1/4 of seconds. Thx for your suggestions Michael Fried, I will try it in the next level.

However, I have started using it from stage 4-1 Well the title of the movie is "Perfect Time by Genisto", so I guess that means you have to start all over, even if it's just for a quarter of a second :)

Here's another suggestion. I'm not sure if this has any use in a speed run, but if you ever need to turn around fast, you can let go of B for a frame as you turn around, and you won't slide as far as if you held down B for the whole time, and you'll start running in the opposite direction sooner. Edit: "but if you even need to turn around fast" doesn't make sense, so I fixed that typo (changing "even" to "ever").
