I'm still not the master I once was So what's the problem? Just keep practicing until you're the master you once were :P. Maybe I should make a new poll that asks: Will a horrible 45 minute DKC run be acceptable as the run Deviance sends to SDA? I'm too lazy to try to think of interesting choices now but I'll do my best if you think the poll is a good idea.

To get 45, you can't play horribly, you have no choice but to play almost as perfect as humanly possible ;). I'm going to stop playing on emulator now and get back to playing on the console. I found a couple new tricks today, minor ones that save seconds. Here's a list of problems I'm currently working on, maybe you can help me with them? 1. Poison Pond: If I take the time attack route, I risk getting hit; instead I can play it safe and lose 5-10 seconds. It'll still be faster than Snapdragon though. This applies to other levels too, playing safe Vs. taking big risks for time. I also like to show off a lot, which costs me dearly sometimes. 2. Backtracking after the warp in Stop and Go station: This is possible but I can't seem to do it without dying. Currently, I'm just taking the forward route. [Edit: I now have a way of getting across but I have to let Diddy get hit.] 3. Using the warp in Milestone Mayhem: It's hard to get the tire to go over the gap without it falling into the pitfall. I found that bouncing off the Kremling to reveal the tire is faster than using the hidden barrel, but it doesn't always make it appear. This is similar to the DKCCC problem of making a Banana Bunch appear from the ground. 4. The hidden barrel underneath a platform near the midsave checkpoint in Tree Top Town: This is the only unsolved mystery in DKC that nobody has a solution to. What is it for and can it save time? 5. I call it the Rope Glitch. It's similar to my tunnel warping glitch, but here's how it works: If you roll a certain way through a rope, any time after that, pressing Jump will warp you right back onto it. It allows you to kill yourself by falling into the floor in Loopy Lights, but it may have useful purposes. 6. I'm sure there are so many new tricks out there in the game. If we can save another 30 seconds, a new theoretical time of 38 minutes will be reachable. This will be difficult though without the discovery of a major time saving strat (such as a warp).

I was joking about 45 being horrible, I'm just trying to encourage you to go for something even faster. What's the chance of getting hit? Do the enemies follow the same path every time? 5-10 seconds is a lot so I'd say it's worth it. 2. Backtracking after the warp in Stop and Go station: This is possible but I can't seem to do it without dying. Currently, I'm just taking the forward route. [Edit: I now have a way of getting across but I have to let Diddy get hit.] Or you can switch to Donkey before getting hit so you'll still have Diddy. 3. That probably wouldn't save so much time so I'd say it's not worth it unless you can get it almost every time. 4. The hidden barrel underneath a platform near the midsave checkpoint in Tree Top Town: This is the only unsolved mystery in DKC that nobody has a solution to. What is it for and can it save time? I'd guess it doesn't save time. If I remember correctly that was one of the levels with a warp barrel so the level is already pretty short as it is so I don't know how the barrel could help you. Are there any other barrels nearby that shoot into that barrel? I noticed the same thing in the raining level in DKCCC. I wasn't able to roll under the first rope in the bonus level and jump directly to the second rope because Diddy would just grab onto the first rope. I don't see how this could save you time.

Depends on your timing. I'm more worried about the mincers than the enemies themselves. On of them is the trick where you squeeze through the horizontal moving mincer (the one after the three circling mincers). Getting hit there=Lose Enguard permanently.
Or you can switch to Donkey before getting hit so you'll still have Diddy.
here is my way of getting across so far.
3. Using the warp in Milestone Mayhem: It's hard to get the tire to go over the gap without it falling into the pitfall. that's true, but my main problem is still getting the tire over the pit consistently. This also has to be the oddest warp in the game. You can only get inside with DK for some reason. [Edit: Problem solved...mostly]
I'd guess it doesn't save time. If I remember correctly that was one of the levels with a warp barrel so the level is already pretty short as it is so I don't know how the barrel could help you. Are there any other barrels nearby that shoot into that barrel?
There could be, but I can't find it. Also, this barrel sometimes disappears. I wonder if there's a way to extract an image of that entire area...

It could be 45:10 I'm getting everytime, I haven't checked to the second. This was without the Milestone warp and the Stop and Go backtrack method. Both together could add up to about 30 seconds of time saved.

it's pretty much the negative counter glitch. Anyway, I got 46 today, I think I'm playing better overall than I used to. Edit: Here's one Glitch he might have not seen yet.

of course I'm not done. I just got 45 today, and a time of 44 is coming up next, which is probably close to the human limit.

I just found another similar glitch to the one you just posted. After touching the wrong letter, jump on the slope on the left or the right, and Diddy will throw his hat on the ground as he moves across the screen, and then instead of jumping on his hat like he's supposed he'll just keep moving.

yeah, I used to do that glitch in all my runs, until the new route prevented me from doing it. It's also on wonn's site. Edit: I did a run on emulator and found that if I play without making mistakes, my time would be 44:10.

I played as I would regularly, but pressed the rewind key on zsnes everytime I made a mistake (which was about 5 times). If I did it one level at a time I could do more risky strats, but here I played with the same set of strats I would do in a no save run.

About how much does each mistake usually cost you, and are these small mistakes you're talking about, or big mistakes like dying for example? Btw, about how many times do you usually get hit in each run? Do you think you'll be able to pull off a no damage run? (not including any places where getting hit saves time)

Quote: About how much does each mistake usually cost you, and are these small mistakes you're talking about, or big mistakes like dying for example? Getting hit sometimes can be worst than dying. For example, lose Expresso in Ice Age Alley and your run is finished. Finishing the entire game without any unintentional hits is extremely hard to do with the amount of risks you have to take. With the speed and timing in Blackout Basement, even on missed button press can kill you. Even SnapDragon in his safe strat route got hit close to a dozen times. On average, I've gotten hit about 2-3 times. Quote: About how much does each mistake usually cost you, and are these small mistakes you're talking about, or big mistakes like dying for example? Anything that costs me 5 seconds or more. Edit: Now if only had time to do something like This in my run.

I'm getting kind of curious about exactly how good you are at the game. Can you make a no save state run of just up to the first Candy? (or some other small section of the game)

wouldn't that ruin the excitment :P ? It won't be too long until I hit 44 on the console, after that I'll start recording. I know a time of 43 would be pretty close to unbeatable, but at the moment I'm 10 seconds short of it. Maybe I should see if Iron Knuckle has found some new tricks, on his last FAQ it says he got 48 so it's probably outdated. I really don't want to submit 44 only to have someone beat it by a few seconds with 43.

It won't be too long until I hit 44 on the console, after that I'll start recording. Why aren't you recording already? Won't it be upsetting to finally get 44 and not have a video of it, or do you think you won't have any trouble getting 44 several times? here's a run I made of myself beating Tanked Up Trouble. Used 0 savestates and no slowdown. http://membres.lycos.fr/poya07/games/TT-Deviance.smv Of all the levels in the game, why did you have to choose the one that's least interesting to see? That doesn't tell me very much about how much skill you have.

If I can get it once, I can get it many times. If I can't do it without recording, then I certainly can't do it when the VCR is running. This is a lesson I learned when doing recorded runs over summer.

I chose this because it lets you show off your reflexes. If you don't like it, choose a level for me.

I chose this because it lets you show off your reflexes. If you don't like it, choose a level for me. Choose the level where you think people would be least likely to beat or match your time while doing their own 101% speed run (though play it with the same amount of risks that you would in whole game speed run), so it should be something fairly hard. If you can't decide, a few suggestions can be snow barrel blast, torchlight trouble, blackout basement, or misty mine. Edit: In case anyone's interested, someone on the MK MB said that someone beat Snapdragon's DKC2 time with a 1:31 and it'll probably be on SDA soon.

I finished my first day of recording. It made me remember how much harder speedrunning is when the VCR is on; controlling the nerves is half the battle! I died a lot of times early on for some reason and had to keep restarting, which was odd. My best today was 45, I got hit and lost Enguard in Poison Pond then had to take a lot of risks later to make up for the time. I can do better than this, but just in case I'll keep it on the side. Uni starts again today so I'll have to make room somehow for speedrunning. We'll see what recording Day 2 brings.
