At this point I'll probably just be practicing techniques and optimization. I'm not worried about movie recording yet simply because the desynch issues are too abundant. This is more a test run. I was going to use the most current revision but the hotkey issues are too game-breaking for me. I'll probably revert to r7323 myself as it's been suggested as most reliable. I do agree that at this point it's unlikely we'll see success in publishable format; we also desperately need an analog TAS input plugin (probably less important for four swords, though, I suppose). If you do make any progress, recordable or not, please share in an appropriate thread; I love Four Swords and would be glad to offer any suggestions/critiques if they'd help.

I also do TASing of Smash bros. Melee, and need every now and then some other input than 100% ones. R7323 allows you to do inputs that goes from 1% to 500%. But you have to leave game, set input, go back to game, do the wanted part of TASing, then leave again and put back the inputs to normal. Having an input plugin would help a lot, yes. I haven't done enough to share for now. I have in mind to play my WIP on other revisions to see what will happen. Maybe it will work? If not, then I'll have to record my screen using an external device such as my digital camera... lol.

Yeah, I considered some sort of FRAPS or screen-capture device to film me as I'm playing it, then go back and edit the loading of savestates etc. Of course that wouldn't be submittable but it'd be a fun watch. My poor laptop would probably not survive the process, but I have a mean desktop back in the states that could handle it easily enough. Hopefully I have something to show for it soon.

With all the talk of TASing this game, I can't help but wonder what a fully optimized 100% TAS would look like. Would love to see that some day.

Bisqwit did something similar.

I just thought of something interesting! Some or many of you have already thought of this before but I have never seen anyone mention it before. In a tas, we will obviously move godly via frame precision and razersharp scandashing. That being said, why should we pick boost ball? Think about it! Skipping boost ball in an any% run, we would avoid a pretty major detour going to Phendrana and all. Think of all the loading periods between doors, areas to cross and even cutscenes. When I think of all this, I am pretty sure we would gain a lot of seconds in the end skip getting boost ball.

Boost is required to instantly end Ridley's air phase.

So how long does knocking Ridley to the ground "manually" take compared to the amount of time required to pick up the Boost Ball? And of course how much time does having the ball save? Assuming Ridley's manipulable, it ought to be possible to knock him down with charged Plasma shots pretty quickly.

but in a tas we can control the boost ball even better. i figure perfect boosting all the time should save a lot of time. plus the ridley thing too.

Wouldn't perfect scandashing be better than perfect boosting, though? Speeds should be somewhat comparable but the scandashing doesn't require morphing all the time.

The problem is that scandashing requires something to scan (obviously), so you can't do it everywhere. Boost saves a lot of time in the places you can't.

There's also the problem that the scan dash isn't nearly as controllable. You can bend it a bit, but otherwise you're stuck in a straight line. Also, doesn't Geocore take significantly longer without boost since you have to reload the room?

Edit: Er, I just checked an SDA run and it just dashes to the outer ring. No reloading necessary.

I see. I guess a power bomb would not do the trick? Edit: If we could somehow find a workaround for Ridley's air phase, I see a lot of potential with scandashing in a tas. I just rewatched sparky's 1:01 run and there are enemies and other objects where you can scandash from, whereas he used morph ball to boost in various areas.

I still hate to rain on anyones parade here. I hope someone else has TASed the openning frigate to tell me that I just fail at TASing. After my last test I spent another half month perfecting the frigate in all the places I could. The problem arises when I actually went SLOWER than my first test. during my escape the first time I only ended up ahead of the world record escape time by 0.03 seconds. this time it was 0.11 I made sure to use as many scar dashes as possible. (also yes ou can bend scan dashes, and bunny hop to maintain speeds) I used all the shorcuts. but this game seems like playing real time can be just as fast as tasing.

The Trilogy version has ton of tricks removed, so no.

The Space Jump Boots shortcut alone in GC version would likely save more time than all the instant point-and-shoot the Wii version allows put together. Especially considering how fast TAS aiming could potentially be.
First a movie gets submitted, and ends up accepted despite breaking rules other runs have been rejected for. And when I vote less than spectacularly on this movie, I become the victim of harassment and threats. Yay, favoritism.

I know that scan dashes were removed pretty quickly, but you can also get early Space Jump via a combat dash (like a scan dash, but with a different visor). Does that still work in Trilogy? (Not that Trilogy is at all likely to be faster, with the number of tricks removed in it. Still, it's worth bearing in mind such "suboptimal" tricks, just in case they turn out to be optimal somewhere.)

Combat dashes were removed, though there's a(n insanely difficult though that doesn't matter in a TAS) way of getting it early in Trilogy. Not that it matters, because there's no reason to ever TAS the Trilogy version. >_>

I'll get this game this evening, and take a look at it. If it syncs well, I could work on something.

I would travel to Quebec and shake your hand immensely if you would work on this. Speaking of this game, no offense to the author of this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnIa2iHW6o0 but that's not exactly how I imagined a tas of Metroid Prime should look. He uses for some reason (I don't understand much what he is saying by reading his description) the Pal version, which is obviously something we wont do and makes a few dash errors and whatnot. Regardless of that, it's a nice beginning. Something for you Wak and others to compare with the future wip :) Edit: and Miles aims to smash all damn speedrun records of Metroid Prime 1-3. I can sense his intentions ^_^ And why wouldn't he? He is outdoing himself and other speedrunners of said games.

yeah, it's definitely not great. way too slow in a lot of parts. the only good thing i saw was the bunny hop in the escape.

Is Morphball mode that much faster before the boost? it just looks like it just slows things down
