I would say don't worry about making a no-damage run... pretty much every other Castlevania movie on this site involves taking a LOT of damage to save time.

I support this. I'd say if this game wasn't released on the Genesis and instead on the SNES, we'd have a good TAS on this site already. That's what I think atleast..

The places where you can take damage to save time in this game are very few if there are any at all, since you lose both your weapon upgrade and special weapon (up+attack).

I can understand losing your final upgrade (flaming whip/spear) but I don't recall losing your special weapon unless you actually die. Oh, and up+attack doesn't use the special weapon in this, since there are 3 buttons on (most) Genesis controllers. :P

by default the controls are as such: A - Attack B - Jump C - Item C+up - Item Special Thus 4. Anyways, I'd still rather see one done with spear dude over whip guy.

Shows how much I know about the game. I didn't know this one had item crashes.

Hopefully somebody is still working on this. It's a great game. However I'd like to see 2 changes from the run at the top of the thread: 1) Use Expert mode. Use the infamous Komani code at the title screen (not the press start one) which unlocks expert in the options. 2) Use Eric Lecarde. He can take a number of shortcuts John can't, which will be really noticable in Stage 4. I'd love to do it myself, but I would need a lot of help. ^^;;

I am working on it, but slowly (since my thesis is killing me at the moment). I'm still on the first level. For your two suggestions: 1) Yep, already am. 2) We'll see about this one. :>

Barely working on it... as I wrote, I have my thesis (one month until graduation now), job applications, and not really any motivation or time to do much else. I have finished about half of the first level. I would also love to finish this, but expect it to take a while.

Just wanted to give my support for this awesome game, and hopefully steal some strats for a regular speedrun I'm also very very slowly working on :-). The TAS' have been very helpful here so far. I just need to figure out how to use that damn powered up subweapon (or say screw it and just not use it, as not getting hit is stupid at points for a real speedrun where you have to slow down considerably) [I do see the button inputs, so I don't need instructions on how to use it, just need practice at it]. One question I do have, is how in the first level is it decided whether you get the 3rd powerup (i.e. blue flame) from that book? It seems really random...

I haven't figured it out, but I can tell you as much as that you need to have more 8 crystals (minimum for usage) to have any chance to get the special weapon.

Yea, I knew you needed 8 crystals (not sure its worth it with spear dude, powered secondary isn't as good), but even getting the spear/whip to get a blue flame is what I was more concerned about, and it seems random. Maybe I'll just have to keep doing the first 2 scenes over and over until I get a run with it in there.

Well, I figure since it's been awhile, I may as well post a WIP for my competition run... here To anticipate most questions: Q: Why didn't you get the flaming spear from the book? A: The flaming spear is lost the moment you get hurt, and I have to get hurt by the floating eye moments after I would get it to avoid losing time. Besides that, I had no idea how to manipulate it into happening. Q: Then why do you get the book anyway? A: It's actually impossible to make the jump from the starting platform to the middle platform. To get up on top of the middle platform without going through the mermen below (definitely a waste of time), I have to hollow out the alcove with the book and perform a super-jump. It's impossible to do so without collecting the book. Q: Why do you get hurt by the floating eye to get boosted to the right, since the damage boost is about the same speed? A: I have to. Stop the input just before the jump and try getting off any other way without wasting time. There's no way to avoid the floating eye. Q: What's the real point of getting the holy water anyway? It doesn't do any more damage. A: Actually it does, because of how I throw it. In mid-air, the boomerang special won't hit the full three times like the holy water special will. Q: Why do you get score bonuses? A: Why not?

(deleted previous effort) I'm making a real speedrun of this, so its a little easier for me. This is about 8 seconds faster than you did it I think. First, my boss battle SUCKS. Test this, idk what to do against him optimally. Other things I did bad: Traveling up stairs, you can get some acceleration. I didn't. I also stopped at one point in the very first room, don't do that. My AIM SN is nineallday00 if you would like to discuss anything further. I can suggest optimal playing for most situations I would bet, as I've run into them all. Also can stop in on irc, I idle there a lot. edit: i redid this a bit, and did it up to the boss battle. I missed one hit on the first sub boss though which was dumb and idk how it happened. Wastes about 10 frames and looks dumb. The first boss is a nightmare to manipulate, so i gave up. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4870/Akumajo%20Dracula%20-%20Vampire%20Killer%20%28J%29.gmv Oh, and i'm not monitoring RAM at all. You should do this at least for the enemies. You can also manipulate that enemy that I killed in 1.7 to jump into the pit, i got sick of trying (i think its based on when you enter that area), but i've had it happen in real play. Edit 2: actually, here is the full movie improvement: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4889/Akumajo%20Dracula%20-%20Vampire%20Killer%20%28J%29.gmv I'm begging someone that actually knows how to TAS to do this. It honestly is not that hard of a game to TAS besides boss battles.

So far, the optimal strategy against the midboss that I've been able to work out is this: Go up to him and spear spam. When he uses his flame breath, jump away from him, turn around and throw a holy water special, then approach when safe. I can probably gain a second or so on the midboss by manipulating him into not doing the flame breath, and possibly from more frame-precise attacking. This is just a first-draft run, I plan on going through it one more time after I'm done with this.

Curtmack: Have you watched the previous movies, and the mini-competition we had? I think there is a lot to learn from them. The optimal strategy for the miniboss is to get him to use his flame breath and still hit him continously with an item. If he breaks the windows you lose more time to lag than you win by being able to hit him with the spear. The items do not have the same damage. The axe is the strongest, but it's also slow.

<curtmack> I see what he did <curtmack> he picked up the flaming spear from the book <curtmack> thereby skipping the pauses from picking up the spear upgrades earlier <curtmack> although he foolishly throws most of that gained time away by using the magic fire <curtmack> which lags like no tomorrow <curtmack> so who doesn't know how to TAS, hmm? First, curtmack, I don't know why you attacked me for me fully admitting I don't know how to TAS. If you thought my last comment was an attack on you (someone that knows how to TAS), I COMPLETELY did not mean that towards you. I meant that I didn't know how to TAS at all, and was really hoping someone would continue with this. I played most of that video at 100%, only using frame advance where I had no alternative, because I don't know how to use TAS tools. Most of my re-records came from trying out stuff that would help out my own speedrun. I thought this site was about helping to make the best video possible? And I told you my first sub-boss fight sucked. You wanted to see how to get the flaming spear and keep it, I showed you how. I used the thing that lags out so bad because it did more damage, I honestly didn't test at all which was faster, because I wasn't hitting him at the first possible frame half the time anyways. I was testing out how to move in the level, and like I said, someone else who is better at manipulating boss battles should do better. Oh, and don't throw away that special just because it lags like a mofo. It absolutely rapes the final boss in level 2. edit: and i hope you noticed me switch to "skip cutscene." It wastes 2 frames, but I think that you use up frames even skipping the cutscenes optimally. Not sure about that though.

Just messing around with the beginning of this again, was able to improve this a bit: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5672/stanski%20castlevania.gmv I might slowly work on this, as it doesn't seem like anyone else wants to. I don't know how much patience I'll have for doing this though, it is a real pain in the ass to do this, but do you guys think that looks good enough so far, or that I'm missing something?
