Wouldn't be cool if we did runs using cheats? Like you can modify the character to run or jump super fast, have all powerful items ect? This would be so fun I think and would go in the demo section. You could glitch a game up good so much i bet being able to run through enemeies and such? Mario comes to mind first with invincible star, and it would just be fun, plus easier to make the run also. Just since sometimes you can get stressed making a normal run. I also know people just want to see some games beaten, not for speedrunning. And we can always use it as a "map" for games we have been thinking about, but of course seeing and not just reading a walkthorugh would be easier.

It wouldn't interfere with the noral speedrunning we do. It could be a demo of how much a game could be broken.

Well, go ahead and open a topic specifically for funny playaround with cheats. I think a topic for this should be sufficient, I see no need for putting such runs on the main site.

Cheating should not be used unless its really necessary. I think we've had this discussion a couple of times in various threads. Like Dune for Genesis for example. I think we discussed the usage of passwords in order to make separate runs for every single mission instead of making a big run of the entire game.

My stance is, go ahead and use all the cheats you want when making a run... As long as you don't submit them :)

On this site we don't allow cheats. Some reasons are listed at http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html#2 (cheats fall under the same rule as hacks; hacks are actually just hard-coded cheats, or cheats are just temporary hacks).

Yes, cheats are a bad idea. We already use Tools to make the movies with Save State and Slow Down, so there is no need for cheats anymore. All games should be easy playable with these Tools.

Ok. Here is a run using using infinite health cheat. If anyone want to ever speed run this game which is kind of a nice looking comic book style type of game, well here you go. www.geocities.com/sliverjazz/LastActionHero.zip

Ok. Here is a run using using infinite health cheat. This is a pretty cool game graphics wise. The cartoon and movie were cool also. I collected those duffle bags but you dont need them. The last levels could be optimised better since it is like a maze. www.geocities.com/sliverjazz/AttackoftheKillerTomatoes.zip

something to alter the gameplay or perhaps access a mode that is not availible until a full first playthrough would be fine for me (the Castleroids come to mind here). but just giving yourself infinite health, ammo, yada yada yada would be EXTREMELY pointless. anyone can do that with cheats. so im torn between it. we suddenly started accepting hacks (which im not gonna get into here), but that doesnt mean using hacks that simply start you off as all powerful so you can just breeze through the game would be interesting to view. my opinion though, so dont invest too much. ;)

If the game doesn't explode, don't even try using cheats. The fact that cheats are used in a run almost always wipes out any impressiveness that the run gains at face value. P.S. FCEU can save cheats? Edit: And you only need one thread, not three.

I tried making one topic but all the games names wouldn't fit in the subject.

Well, there is one major difference. Hacks (like the ones this site accepts) usually make the game very different and harder -- cheats usually just give you full ammo or health and nothing else...

That's what TASes already are. You are suggesting that we play different games entirely, which look like the original superficially but are different in some way... but this site is about seeing how hard a completely unmodified game can be destroyed.
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

As others have said, Bisqwit doesn't accept hacks that make the game easier, unless it's to remove tedious repetition (for example, the SMB2j patch to enable worlds A-D without having to beat the game 8 times). Hacks that increase difficulty (look at Air, for example) or which otherwise make the hack a unique gameplay experience in its' own right (see Mario Adventure or Super Demo World) may be allowed, on a case by case basis. Not to say that the concept of a cheated TAS run is an inherently bad one, just that it doesn't go well with what Bisqwit has consistently said is the vision behind this site. If anyone does such a run, I implore you to make it abundantly clear that, in addition to being a TAS, it uses cheats or actual game modifications on top of that.

Why must you not fit all the game names in one topic? One topic saying "Games beaten using cheats" would be enough. Even then, I don't think it's worth it, considering the lack of response. You might as well have posted all this in the original thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3506 Edit: Oops... minor edit. :)

I also don't like the idea of cheated runs. As FractalFusion said: cheats take away the impressivenes. I have no intention on watching a cheated run unless it hardens the game a lot. But feel free to make as many cheated runs as you like, as long as you don't submit (and spam the whole nesvideos with) them.
Which run should I encode next? :)

I guess the only other thing i have to add is it can't hurt having the game played through just so someone can see if they want to do a normal speedrun of it and if it is a boring game that wouldn't be a good game to run maybe this could spruce it up like my swamp thing post.

That would only be recommended if it really was near-impossible to pull something off, such as 1/10000 luck manipulation or something, or if no one could beat the game with no items even when tool-assisted. But generally strategies are not near-impossible to pull off with tool-assistance, so it wouldn't hurt to demonstrate a game normally. Impressive would be taking no damage in a game that seems difficult to go through without damage, rather than using an infinite health cheat.
