This topic got me playing tetris (on NES) again, and I want to thank you for the inspiration. I reached level 18 from starting from level 9, with a score of 164,595 and 184 lines. I haven't been able to get a respectable score like that until now. (before today my best was probably about 50,000).

Okay, I thought of some ways to improve this game. 1. Don't let the blocks speed up. Ever! 2. Before dropping the next block, have a dialog box pop up that asks, "Have you thought of your best plan for placing this block?" 3. Give the player extra points for doing sweet freestyle move tricks! I want credit for rotating at hyper speed for no reason.

Hmm... This mode is best suited for those of us with telepathic abilities and fingers connected directly to the machine: http://ccgi.gdward.plus.com/cgi-bin/tetris/highscores.php?death=1&hidenext=1&mirror=1&flip=1 (Death, hide, mirrored, flipped)

You've been luck-manipulating again, haven't you?

Actually while talking about this tetris game... I noticed some pieces don't behave symmetrically. This isn't normally such a big deal, but when doing death mode + hide next, it can be frustrating since the pieces aren't consistently manipulatable. For example, the I-piece needs only 2 columns of room to rotate on the right side of the screen, but 3 on the left. Will rotate to vertical:
..........
......XXXX
....OOOO..
....OOOO..
....OOOO..
Won't rotate:
..........
XXXX......
..OOOO....
..OOOO....
..OOOO....
I'm sure this is just because the pivot-point is the 3rd square. But it still is annoying since you have to think asymmetrically :) The L-pieces also seem to have inconsistent behavior. Anyway a minor complaint, but it would make those modes more doable :) As it is, the I-piece is INCREDIBLY annoying in death mode/hide next.

Another complaint: there is no way to prematurely lock a piece into place. In all the tetris games I've played, there is a button that instantly makes your current piece drop and lock, and the next piece comes. For example, in Tetrinet, space bar serves this function. It was annoying to play your game because I was constantly expecting pieces to lock and they never did.

Hold down. And yeah, I've noticed those rotation problems... they're the source of me losing quite a bit (I think even the T piece uses another rotate point), gah... a little more friendliness would make it batter, but..

That's the first thing I tried, of course. Holding down (when they can no longer move farther down) does not cause them to instantly lock. It merely makes then lock (very slightly) faster.

Spacebar now does that instead.

Now we just need fixed rotation rules, heh. Also: up to 15 million in normal mode. =) Edit: After trying it a bit, I'm going to have to request that "Up" be made to hard-drop instead. Space interferes too much with using Z/X to rotate.

Made the top 20 with by far the lowest time and lines. I like to go big, and go for tetrises every single time. Has anyone played tetris on the TI-89 graphing calculator, can anyone beat a score of 526046?

I'm not sure how that compares to mine. How many points is 1 tetris starting at level 9? Mwhahaha, broke the top 10, sorry FODA, pushing you down ;).

Going for all tetrises will end up killing you before you get anything major. This particular version of Tetris has nothing to stop it from dishing out strings of 5 of the same piece, or have any other way of effectively evening out... (of course, this is bad, since anyone who does any reading about the game will quickly learn that a large unbroken string of S and Z pieces will end in a forced loss, no matter what)

I mean, I keep a perfect stack of at least 4 with a gap on the right edge, as my opening move. When I clear that stack, I build it up again. If the stack gets too big before getting a red l piece, I can do countless recovery techniques. My goal is to keep 4 rows with a 1 gap for an l piece whenever possible, without risking death. I believe that is the best way to maximize your score? In the case of 5 s or z blocks, or any other garbage, I try to lay them as flat as possible.
