Post subject: Which games are best when "not sober"?

I hope this topic is appropriate. Lately whenever my neighbor and I get high we end up playing old-school NES games and some SNES and Sega Genesis games too sometimes. Which games should we definitely play? Here's our current favorites: NES ----- Bubble Bobble (the music is really trippy) Antarctic Adventure Super Dodgeball Yo! Noid M.C. Kids Excitebike (we love the victory music) Karnov Mike Tyson's Punchout SNES ------ Donkey Kong Country Super Street Fighter 2 (our fav) Super Punch Out SEGA ------- Altered Beast Sonic (series) Golden Axe What other games are really fun to play while high? Or if you prefer, when drunk?

Altered Beast is a good choice of game to play while being high. I believe that's exactly how it actually was created. Like, when the project coordinator got extremely high and his consciousness became altered, they called him Altered Beast. As for me, I've never a tried to play while high/drunk. I guess some scary FPS would do good, though. For two players, fighting games and scroll-shooters, maybe.

I'm thinking Kirby, because watching a pink marshmallow eat little animals and steal their powers has got to be trippy. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, because it has a dinosaur carrying a baby and shooting eggs at things, especially when Yoshi kills the pirahna plant before Magikoopa can cast a spell on it. Sonic because it moves really fast, which has to be fun for people with diminished reflexes. Any of the Rampage games because monkeys and lizards smashing buildings, stomping on tanks, eating pedestrians and belching fire is going to be even more entertaining on a reduced IQ. Also, A Boy and His Blob because, well, that game is an acid trip even without drugs. The ultimate game, though, is Food Fight for the Atari 7800. You run through a room full of food and throw it at chefs who are also throwing food at you. Two players can take turns shouting obscenities as they waste chefs and get force fed pies. This game is a blast for players and spectators alike while sober, so imagine it drunk or high.

I've never heard of that Food Fight game, but I definitely want to check that one out. edit: That MESS emulator sure is a mess to setup. Egh.

>Super Street Fighter 2 (our fav) I agree with this. Other games i can remember enjoying in low-IQ mode include Contra: Hard Corps and Yuu Yuu Hakusho (the fighting game)

I also agree with SSF2. I played it countless times in this mode and it's awesomly enjoying. No matter if you win or lose you just have to laugh your ass off after every fight!

Well, I don't know what was so funny about it but my friend was laughing SOOO much when he played MGS3 in that "mode". I myself enjoyed Altered Beast very much.

I cannot even tell you how many times my friend and I have burst out laughing after some rounds in SSF2. Like I remember we had a Vega (claws) vs Chun-Li round where all we did was try to tick-throw each other. And we always laugh whenever someone actually gets hit by that awful tiger knee. I just played Food Fight (after a few minutes of setting up MESS to work properly) and that looks like it'll be fun when high (or drunk). What's Root Beer Tapper? I also don't know anything about Yuu Yuu Hakusho. edit: I found a Shockwave version of Root Beer Tapper. Apparently it used to be an arcade game found in many bars. So far I'm terrible at it, dying at level two. But it looks like it'll be fun "in that mode".

My friend and I were once able set up a Quake deathmatch while drunk. I don't have the demo anymore, but it was awesome to see afterwards, me constantly trying to push into walls and wondering why I couldn't walk anymore, as well as me grabbing the quad and then proceeding to make the secret door's life a living hell because I thought he was an opponent. I'd like to play Sim City 2000 while drunk once. I wonder what kind of city I'd make.

Winners may use drugs, but they certainly don't win them. You're right.

Hmmm, for the most part I've kept substance usage and video gaming as totally separate pasttimes. But there were numerous N64 games that my friends and I routinely played under the influence:
  • Super Mario 64
  • Goldeneye
  • those really awesome wrestling games made by AKI
As a rule I think any game that allows for exploration and free movement (like above) are good choices because they offer more choices for gameplay. Of course, the Grand Theft Auto series is an excellent example of this. More recently, I tried playing Super Monkey Ball while drunk. I do NOT recommend it if you intend to succeed, because equilibrium is a problem!

Any game is funny, allmost, when unsober. :) But a clear favorite right now is Super Puzzle Fighters for PSX. There is also a version that can be played in MAME, but it doesn't allow you to go on "quests" to unlock new stuff. :) Any fighting game is fun. Mostly Mortal Kombat 2 for SNES. Code name Eagle with jet-planes patch is funny for PC too. Can't remember the real patch name. But it's damn fun indeed. :)

>I also don't know anything about Yuu Yuu Hakusho. It's listed as Yuu Yuu Hakusho - Makyoutohissen (J), it's a fighting game for Genesis. The great part about it is that you can play 4-free-for-all or 2-vs-2 tag teams, which can be hilarious. (The CPU can play the leftover characters.) The bad thing is that it's in Japanese, but once you figure out what menues does what that shouldn't be a problem. There's a demo by me if you want to see the game's potential: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2998 >Say NO to drugs. How about "Say YES to a moderate amount of drugs"?

So in a way, you're saying this thread is for losers, and that you wanted to post in it? HAH! *ahem* Back to the topic. I had a blast playing Super Mario Bros. 3 once, when I was moderately drunk. Then again, that game is always a blast no matter what. I also tried "We love Katamari" briefly, but didn't have as much fun, strangely enough. I don't drink that often because alcohol is mega expensive where I live, so I can't really experiment on more games. Besides, playing games is about the last think that comes to mind when you're drunk, so that doesn't help either.

Some video games are much funner when high than drunk. Especially games with nostalgic value and awesome music. I tried playing Yuu Yuu Hakusho on SNES and I didn't understand what was going on at all. I'll check out your demo, truncated. edit: The Sega Genesis version of Yuu Yuu Hakusho is majorly different from the SNES one. That or I accidentally selected some other mode of fighting.

Definitely any game of the Bishi Bashi series for PSX, if intoxicated by alcohol. Booze and Street Fighter II on SNES is also very entertaining if played against real player.

Rainbow Road from Mario Kart comes to my mind... The N64 version might be better even though it's probably the most boring course when played sober

I agree. For people who don't have enough of a life to have fun sober so they have to create artificial happiness which will eventually kill them. Happy dying guys!
