• Made with VBA v1.7.2 re-recording v17.1
  • Uses SRAM to enable a new game on Hard Node
  • Uses glitches to warp to distant areas
  • Hardest difficulty
  • Takes damage. Once to reach an inaccessible platform and in other places just to save some time.
  • Never uses recovery items
  • Never uses save rooms to restore health
  • Never uses teleport rooms
Hmm... what to say about the game...? Aria of Sorrow is (in my opinion) the best of the 3 Castlevania episodes released for the GBA. It seems to be the real successor of Symphony of The Night. The character design is excellent and the animation is very smooth. You have tons of different weapons, such as knifes, swords, axes, spears, fist attachments and even some guns! And besides that, there are more than 100 enemy souls to collect, and each one has it's unique effect. To finish this game description, the game has (like SoTN) some glitches that allow the player to warp to faraway places and surpass the normal map completion limit.
About the making of the movie... It's really hard to make the enemies drop the items and souls you need sometimes, because the random number generator works only when the game thinks it's needed, so, in certain places, no matter how many times you use frame search you'll always have the same result. In these occasions, you must force the number generation. There are many ways to do that, like backdashing, attacking, hitting something, using morph souls, destroying something, leveling up and others... But I repeat: it's HARD! You can see that when you look at my re-record count... I have tried to make an entertaining run, that's why it's in Hard mode. It's fast, of course, but my main goal was diversion, not speed. A keen viewer might notice some minor mistakes in the first minutes of the run, but they'd not significantly reduce the total time, so I thought it was better just let them be...

I forgot the most important part! Duh! My thank yous goes to Atma, for the great hints about TAS and always blunt critics, and to Bag of Magic Food, for his endless nonsense.

Truncated: After having discussed what to do with this submission in the #nesvideos channel, I decided on the following:
  1. To accept this submission, and have it obsolete Atma's any% run
  2. To allow a Normal difficulty run to obsolete this movie
  3. To NOT obsolete this movie if a 100% movie is made, but instead make a new category for that
The most important point is however that this submission is accepted.

Truncated: Four months later... the #1 point in the judgement wasn't like very well, so this is now it's own category. Instead any new submission WILL obsolete one of the existing movies, there will NOT be 4 categories.

Very good run! I play aria for fun, and knows how hard sometimes is to get some souls... lol... As I see, there is no perfect game that can't be abused anyway... PS: GOD! YOU RUN AT 1 HP TO MAXIMIZE THE SOUL POWER! LOL!

I don't know the Castlevania series very well so I decided to play this game a bit before watching to get acquainted with its logic... What a berserk run! It was just short enough so the continuous hack&slay didn't get boring (it was pretty fun actually and there was enough variety). Probably a must-watch for people that know the game and still great for those that do not (like me). So I'd vote Yes if I could ;)

I'd have to say no, I see no reason why this run couldn't have been done in normal mode in the first place. The only thing hard seems to add here is more time spent while killing enemies. There is lots of cool stuff in this movie but at some places it just seems lazy, I understand that's mostly for randomization but it still looks bad. Then again I'm just an ebil lurker atm so I guess my comments doens't carry that much weight yet :)

I make my runs in Hard mode just because I like it and I'm a stubborn guy. It doesn't matter if you're new here. It seems you know the game, so your opinion IS important. Thanks.

It's too bad some technical issues (including the number of other runs for this game) apparently make it uncertain whether this should be published, because it's really quite entertaining. (Voted yes.)

Thanks for all the votes (both yes and no). I don't care if this will be published or not. My next one will be a 100% soul + glitches run, what would obviously obsolete this one. This was my first submission, and I'm very satisfied with the acceptance it had. Expect the next to be twice better. thanks again!

Simply amazing! So many glitches, so many different weapons and souls used... i loved every second of it, great work. Big yes vote.

>My next one will be a 100% soul + glitches run, what would obviously obsolete this one. I would rather see 1) as fast as possible, no limitations (that would be this one) 2) 100% collection, possibly no glitching (to show everything in the game)

Then you should wait for Atma's. Like old megaman games, this game has super cool glitches. Besides that, the game is somewhat long, and I can't watch a run longer than 30 minutes. This glitched 100% soul run will probably take around 25 minutes.

Well... the best thing to do would be to include it in the "hardest difficult", "uses warps" and "abuses programming errors" cathegories. Any Normal difficult run could (theoretically) obsolete it. I said it will be obsoleted because nobody would want to watch this run if there's another much more interesting one with 100% soul collecting, and more warps (that could not be included in this run).

Well, there is an audience for "fastest route" runs.

Not really; if someone submits a run on Normal that has worse playing quality but is still faster (because of the difficulty mode), it probably won't be accepted.

How is this run progressing?

Well, Nitsuja already answered that. But you should take the NES Gradius runs as examples.

Hmm... I'm currently working on Gunstar Super (Future) Heroes. But I've exploited almost every detail in the game, so it will not take long. As soon as i finish it I'll resume the Aria thing. Sorry to do things like this, without proper anouncements... I know that some people are waiting for that run. But I don't want to turn my signature into my "curriculum vitae"

Hope I'm not being uncouth, but it seems a long time has passed since this run was accepted. Where is the movie? I'd very much like to see it. BUMP?

There are many submissions that took even longer to process. That's normal.

Nice run. It was basically what I had planned to do. Now that you have, I don't really see a point in improving it or changing anything really. [interesting] information: My friend and I were originally the ones discovering how to raise your percentage up to 104.5% (it was a long time ago, but I think that was the percentage, don't have the files here at the moment) -- and also finding out the Catoblepas trick, etc. I had an AoS site with 30000+ visitors describing all these glitches etc. Now it's just on my harddrive though.

It's a great run, but I'm sad to see it obsoleting the old video. I liked the old video because you actually got to see the functioning game. This video seems as if it would be very confusing to someone who isn't familiar with the game (similar to the 5 minute CotM video).

heh.. this one will obsolete nothing... btw... are you aware of this thread? and, about the "confusion"... that's the way I like it. I think that's what people want in a TAS. No chatting, no unnecessary boss fights and lots of glitches. That is good for the people who never played the game before as well, because there are no spoilers.

Actually... i don't like chatting, but i do like boss fights. However i also like glitches, unless they highly shorten the play time. Like the Zelda LttP glitch, you get to see like 1% of the game and you don't get to see how the player deals with boss fights or difficult parts. That's stuff i personally like over short- and/or super-glitched runs. That's why i sometimes like 100% runs better, and in this case, like non-glitched AoS movies better.

I still don't understand why this beats Atma's any% run. This movie uses glitches much like the warpful run of Circle of the Moon. Either Atma's run should stay up, or the Circle of the Moon non-warp run should be taken down.
