I'd not dare to say there are more than 20—30 people in the world who could do all the IBJ maze unassisted. Sadly, I'm not among them.
I agree. You only have 3-4 frames tolerance to lay a bomb and this each time. If too early the 3 bombs counter gets empty and if to late you won't be able to jump up from the bomb in time. Pretty awesome to see there are people who have this precise reflexes to still perform it in realtime.

I usually listen to music when doing the IBJ. I just press the key on every beat and it works. So house music fans, get a song between 125-130 bpms (I don't remember the exact bpm), and bomb away!

LOL, that's a great idea! Not really "unassisted", but sure it is an acceptable assistance. :)

Speaking of bomb jumping, I think it might be very possible to bomb jump up to Varia. I was trying it out the other night and got pretty close. You just need a bit of luck and you need to start bombing at the right moment to get past the bugs coming from the pipes. It's not easy, but it's not completely impossible since there's nothing directly blocking the way. Naturally, you'd have to do it with frame advance and lots of save states.

I usually listen to music at the start of boss fights, 'specially phantoon's I've ibjed up to varia before (with the help of zsnes's KEY COMB) but kill the bugs without picking up there pick-ups, it really helps, and the rippers are so slow, they ain't much of a problem either

There are two ways to do it, but the method you described on the m2k2 forum uses two bombs at a time to propel yourself, although it covers more distance with each jump. Which of them is faster, though?

It seems like many people are working on the best tricks in order to beat the game the most fast. Is a TAS going to be made on this wonderful game ? =)

I don't think anyone is working on a run.

Before that, a very good knowledge of the game is needed... I think someone will be working on a run but this is currently too hard, maybe...

Here is a AVI demo of a test TAS of SM Redesign till the walljump boots, encoded in x264 format: http://drewseph.zophar.net/SMR-test_Saturn.avi You can use VLC Media Player to playback it correctly. I especially recommend the vid for the judges to watch and hope it will ensure you that SM Redesign definitely makes a great and entertaining TAS and the hack is worth to accept on TASvideos.

vlc doesn't work for me for some reason. Why don't you post the smv?

Sure, here you go: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1318/SMR_v1.1_test_Saturn.smv Recorded on SM Redesign v1.1 patch which you can download here: http://drewseph.zophar.net/Metroid_Redesign_Headeredv1.1.zip It also works on the newest v1.6 patch as well but since the crawler has less HP than in older patch versions it looks a bit strange when Samus shoots him further althought he is already dead. Luckyly even this didn't cause a desync. :-)

It desyncs for me at the beginning, even though the roms match.

You need a headered ROM of Super Metroid (JU) if you want to use the 1.1 patch I linked before. Also be sure to use nitsujas Snes9x v1.43 improvement9 version to playback the movie.

I'm using v1.43 + v10 via wine, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter whether the rom file has a header (especially since the crc's match).

Bob A - It did matter to me when I tried to patch an unheadered rom with a headered version of the patch. The game woulden't start at all.

It does matter. Movies made with the unheadered version won't work on the headered one.
