Post subject: Suggestion: Get rid of "superplay" in the title

As I understand it, Bisqwit and co. here are making absolutely sure to let people know how these movies were made. In another move that would fit this purpose, it would be best if we got rid of any mentions of "superplay" in connection with our videos, such as in the nesvideos site's title. Why? Well, this may mislead some people because "Superplay" already has a well-established definition. Basically, "SUPER PLAY" (or maybe "SUPERPLAY", I don't remember exactly) was a name put on videotapes which were published by Gamest Magazine in Japan and featured extraordinary skilled runs through various games. They are still being made today in DVD form (as seen in the Devil May Cry 2 one which has been put on the internet), but I am not sure who releases them now (as Gamest has been out of business for a few years now). Seem to recall hearing something about Famitsu GameWave or something like that...*shrug* Anyway, these videos are all completely legit runs, which is why it's especially risky for us to be using that phrase on sites like these. Any suggestions for a possible change? Just plain ol' "timeattack", or something else? Maybe "tools-assisted speedrun", which is the phrase that the DOOM speedrunning community uses for these types of movies... -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

I prefer tool-assisted speedrun instead of timeattack. The former is an already-used term for the exact thing we are doing and is a whole lot more descriptive than the latter.

I hate the term "tool-assisted speed run" because it sounds like we're using wrenches and pliers.

Me too. Do we really need four words to describe this? I like "time attack" because it doesn't really make sense if you think about it and 90% of these videos are played for speed.

I like the "tool-assisted movie" term because it's already being used to mean exactly the thing we're doing and it also describes what it is. For common people, "time attack" only is a fancy synonym for "speed run".

All I'm saying is that you'll never please everyone, so you might as well call the movies whatever the frick you want.

Exactly! No matter how much explaining we do, somebody is always going to cry about it and call us "cheaters."

If you call them timeattacks you would need to also do something to let people know that the playing is made easier, since "timeattack" is normally used for legit speed runs. "Tool assisted" does let people know that, and if they want to know exactly how the playing was made easier they can go to the link. Edit: My suggestion is to call it something like "tool assisted demo" or "tool assisted recording" in the screen before the movie starts, and also mention that it was made for entertainment purposes, and in the subtitles in the movie just call it a speed run.

Wait, I thought legit speed runs were called "speed runs" and illegitimate speed runs were called "time attacks"! Aaah! Hey, I've got an idea... Let's call them "illegit speedruns"! Because that is BADBUTT!

illegitimate speed runs were called "time attacks" No, that's just Arc's definition. I've seen many legit speed runs referred to as timeattacks. Let's call them "illegit speedruns" We already do call them that, just with slightly different wording. By definition, an "emulator movie" can't be legit.

Maybe according to the people at SDA and TG, but you can still play legitamately on emulator.

I think timeattack is fine. Tool-assisted speedrun is on the movies if we want it somewhere, and if people really are too dumb to go see what is meant by timeattack then why would we care what they think?

Because then they troll the boards and Bisqwit gets all kinds of nasty email.

I don't agree. If we call them "tool-assisted" and someone complains that they are "fake", we can always say "we said it was tool-assisted, didn't we? What are you complaining about?". However, "timeattack" doesn't tell anything. It's not descriptive and can be considered fraudulent. "Tool assisted" is a descriptive and honest term. It's also a term which has existed earlier for this exact purpose. I personally will not use the term "timeattack" anymore. I will be using "TAS" instead.

Magic Food's point is valid, though. People are always going to complain. Always. Even if you preface every movie with three pages of text explaining how the movie was made, there's always going to be an asshole who says "you're cheating."

Yes, and even if the disclaimers did get rid of the people who think it's cheating, it's still annoying for people who already know what the movies are to look at. I personally get the same message out of that quick little screen that shows the re-record count. "Aha! Re-records! This was made using a special emulator that doesn't make saving and loading show up in the finished movie!" Of course, that also makes people more competitive, always trying not just to lower the time, but also to lower the number of re-records with better playing skill (and I thought the point was to get over real-time skill!).

Quite a few people view higher numbers as better because of the refinement put into the video, possibly at single-frame precision for some portions. I just like to have the number around as reference. Both extremely low and extremely high rerecord counts are interesting to me, because both show a lot of dedication and time, albeit in different ways.
