I am right now attempting a Pokemon Sapphire TAS Run, and to anyone who is also interested in trying, here are some hints: 1). Torchic may prove to be the better starter, because while he does pose a disadvantage in the first gym, his types prove useful in the Elite 4, and Kyogre will prove to be helpful (as long as you intend on not using Blaziken once you send out Kyogre). Also, speed is the key here. You may get lucky with a +Spd Mudkip, but getting that first strike critical hit would help a lot. 2). Avoid healing at Poke Centers. While it doesn't seem like a lot of time, it adds up if you keep healing at every town. 3). If you can avoid the trainer, avoid him/her. However, if you are like 15 levels down and your going up against the next Gym leader, it may save a lot of frusteration (and potions) to go ahad and fight a few trainers. 4). After doing a practice run (and getting 4:05 b/c I healed at every center and forgot to pick up the bike! >_<). I noticed that the best partner for the 7th Gym (Tate & Liza) would be Sharpedo. I will post a WIP vid real soon!

All of those are void, because in TAS videos it is perfectly legal to just retry whatever goes wrong. So just manipulate the RNG to make all of your hits criticals and all of the enemy's misses. In RBY there was always a chance of a critical and always a chance of a miss but I don't know if this is also in RSE.

True. And to clarify: There is a chance fo a critical, and there is no silly "1/256 chance of not hitting" condition applied to all moves in this game. ^_^ After I go through the 3rd gym, Ill post a WIP.

Hmmmm... I try to play movie, but game runs and frame counter stands at 0/198314... anyways, one hour - and only third GYM... I think that would be a bit too slow... I can't say really as I could not run the movie.

Have you tried setting save type to 128K and real-time clock on? It took me a while to get Pokémon Emerald to work. Edit:

There are limits: - There are situations in which an attack can never hit. - There are situations in which an attack can never miss. - There are situations in which your Pokémon can never attack first. - There are situations in which an attack that hits can never be critical. So it's also about knowing the situation.

Game works fine. I finished it long ago. Movie does not start somewhy. Game runs, and on some reason I can control it while movie is loaded and frame counter shows 0/(total frames, around 168k, i don't remember number).

For the curious: I had finished my run, but the play quality was very bad, so I'm redoing it. (I finished with 2:50 as the time) However, please note: the rom I used was (and I swear it was) called: "Pokemon Sapphire.gba". The zip folder was simply called "PokemonSapphire".

"Pokemon Sapphire.gba" is not a standard ROM name. So, what you should do is download GoodGBA and tell it to rename your ROMs. Then it should become something like "Pokemon Sapphire (U) [!].gba", maybe with a number in front, and that's the ROM name to use.

Thank you so much! EDIT: The filename I got was: Pokemon Sapphire (U) [hIRff]

I think the 'h' in [hIRff] means it's a hacked ROM, which is bad, movies for hacked ROMs usually aren't accepted. You should get a ROM that isn't hacked and use that instead.

The ROM name you want is "0898 - Pokemon - Sapphire Version (U).gba". It is ROM #898 in the universal list of GBA ROMs. There is a bit of issue with this and related Pokemon games. You might need a small patch to get it to work (in 128K), after which the patch is no longer needed.

Hmm, 0898, isn that the one with the Intro Hack? EDIT: Patched and ready to go. A quick WIP (and i mean quick, up to saving prof. Birch). Just want to see if I'm getting the hang of moving through convos and menus quickly. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1428/Pokemon%20Sapphire%20%28U%29%20%28Intro%20Hack%29%20%28Mugs%29%20%5B0898%5D.vbm

Is it OK if you use Flash 128K before recording? For me, the run doesn't work in Flash 64K. I'm also wondering which intro hack you used, and if it is the same as the one I used for Pokémon Emerald (someone named it "trm-pmeu.ips").

Here's the intro patch: http://rapidshare.de/files/27008573/trm-pmeu.ips.html Use this link instead: http://files.filefront.com/trm_pmeuips/;6431881;;/fileinfo.html Put it in the folder with the Pokemon game and set the save to 128K, and it should work. Even though the makers of this patch implied that this patch will only affect trm-pmeu.gba, I found that it will affect all GBA ROMs in the directory.

After patching, you have another hacked rom... heheh

The VBA emulator will temporarily patch ROMs if you let it. Have the patch and the ROM in the same directory. After loading the ROM, make sure Emulator -> Automatic IPS patching is on. I'm not sure why it (the patch) makes the game work. If you want to permanently patch anything (or create patches), you can use SnesTool.

I personally vote that this run just uses no realtime clock, nor flash 128k, as I was able to get it to sync fine when i tried without using either. Not to mention realtime clock is a pain in the ass when it comes to syncing.

it desynced for me in the bug woods, however, I noticed a few mistakes anyway. 1) you walk around the guy between littleroot and oldale town, as opposed to just walking right next to him(wasting about 5 tiles of walking each time, as you did it not once, but twice). 2) you fight several trainers who you can skip. While I can understand you're doing this to get exp needed to learn moves, it still kinda looks bad to me. 3) you pick up potions. this is probably the biggest offender to me, as you should be able to manipulate away any and probably all damage if this is anything like the previous two 'sets' of games. A lot better than your previous attempt though, although I'm a fan of names, not , . - etc. :P
