There have been some problems with our work being ripped off and posted at sites like YouTube. I think these sites, if used properly, could become a great asset to tasvideos.org. Every movie page states "Reproduction of all material from this site is expressly forbidden for the following sites: SpikedHumor.com , YouTube.com." However nearly 100 of our videos are posted at YouTube, and getting far more views than they do here. This isn't really a problem, so much as a lost oppurtunity. The problem is that sometimes the videos are stripped of information crediting the author(s) and referring to tasvideos.org. I see no reason to specifically name sites, instead we should be prohibiting stripping this information. Now days it looks like the encoders know of this problem and put the tasvideos.org information in more than just the beginning so it is harder to discreetly remove. I propose we upload every newly published video onto YouTube to ensure that it is done properly. We should also link or embed the YouTube version from the published movie page, because it is so much easier and faster to use than bittorrent. From every YouTube vid we should also link back to tasvideos ofcourse. I am not sure if the same quality can be stored on YouTube, but if it can, bittorrent would not be needed anymore, I see no reason to get rid of it yet though. We should have one YouTube account do all the uploading so it is all in the same spot on YouTube, if no one wants to do this I'll gladly do it. It is probably a good idea to give examples as I go, but I don't like the clutter so here are some examples. YouTube views // tasvideos.org bittorrent downloads. 44862 + 7531 // 14700 The Legend of Zelda by phil 4034 // 1150 Castlevania: Circle of the Moon by ogreslayer 273826 // ~15000 Super Mario World by flagitious and viper (obsolete) 37561 // 3581 Super Mario World by JXQ 103534 // 5482 Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN/FDS) by phil and genisto As you can see videos on YouTube get way more views than at this site. There is great potential to bring in new users. My example of a movie that was stripped of author / tasvideos information 273826 // ~15000 Super Mario World by flagitious and viper http://youtube.com/watch?v=OTW6m-MvwSE There is no reference to tasvideos, me or viper anywhere in the description or movie. The closest we get is, "This guy pulls off some shat...." That is 270,000 potential new viewers and users who could easily help contribute to and enjoy many other videos at this site. I am going to attempt to get YouTube to either remove this video or add information linking to tasvideos. Ok so back to the point, shall we start a new policy of uploading all vids to YouTube and linking to them from the published page (in addition to having bittorrent)?

Here's how to do that. My opinion is that youtube is the Myspace of the video sites (this is a bad thing). Nothing works with any consistency. I couldn't even make a comment without getting some "error". And the e-mail help service is a joke. What an age we live in.

JXQ, sorry I didn't see your topic sooner (only looked in sites forum). You obviously don't like YouTube, but do you feel it would be good or bad to have our videos there (in an organized fashion)?
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

It would probably be good for this site. But I think it would be a hassle trying to keep it organized, especially with the site's slowness, bugginess, and lack of ability to get the powers-that-be over there to do all that much. Also, remember that if you put your real name in the e-mail to them, they will display it on the page of the movie you are trying to remove. If you don't want this (and think it's ridiculous that they do this while ignoring all e-mails you send demanding that it be removed), then give them a fake name.

One thing that concerns be about changing this statement, "Reproduction of all material from this site is expressly forbidden for the following sites: SpikedHumor.com , YouTube.com." Is that it allowed you to easily remove stolen videos. I'll have to look into policy and stuff to determine if it is changed if we would still be able to remove stolen videos [as easily].

Well, this all depends on whether our goal is to make the site as popular as possible or to punish lots of people who post other people's stuff.

The user that stole the SMW video has also stolen SMB and SMB3. But I think that this guy is actually not doing it on purpose. I think he is seeing the videos somewhere else and where ever that is they removed the watermarks. The reason is he does not claim it as his own, and he doesn't even understand how they were made ("probably cheats, but still cool - in description"). Is the SMB the most recent version, or whos is it? Anyways ignorance is not an excuse so I will still try to get them removed.

I hate YouTube also but I agree that something must be done. The author should be given credit, and if the best way to do that is to do the job yourself than maybe thats the path we should take.

Indeed. I don't see any reason for not sending our videos to YouTube with the proper attributions, if that avoids so much copying without them (or with false ones, which is even worse).

I used JXQ's format to complain to youtube and they removed the SMW video. It there is an agreement that videos should be put on YouTube, only 2 real things would need to be changed. First this statement "Reproduction of all material from this site is expressly forbidden for the following sites: SpikedHumor.com , YouTube.com." Would need to be changed to something along the lines of "Reproduction of all material from this site is expressly forbidden if any information regarding its authors and tasvideos.org are removed." Then on published movie page there should be a link to the youtube video. Bittorrent should remain because I don't see a way to DL the original file from youtube and quality might be lacking. Also maybe in the submit there could be an option to allow the author to choose if they would prefer it to be allowed on youtube or not. The youtube user taipion has been doing a good job uploading our videos with proper credit given (although not permsission), so if we go with this he just needs to keep doing what he is doing. Ultimately the decision is Bisqwit's, but he probably likes to hear people's opinions so all thoughts welcome (and thank you for people who have given their opinion already).

I don't like that TASes are posted on Youtube. Even though more people see the runs, but most (I'd say about 95%) don't get the idea of TASing.

But they will be posted on YouTube, anyway. The question is just whether this is done in a controlled manner, with a link back to this site, a short explanation of how it's not a regular speedrun etc. and with banners etc. intact, or... well, without all that.

Whatever happened to the Google Video plan? Google Video allows for longer clips.

If you have a director's account at Youtube you can have longer clips as well. http://www.youtube.com/director

Although with a director's account at YouTube you can surpass 10 minutes, you are still limitted to 100 MB per video, most of the time this is plenty. We could do google too. Does google have limits on size or length?

Apparently not:
"You can upload as many videos to Google Video as you like, without any size or length limitations. "

I think I can agree with flagitious's idea. But I won't be uploading them. I changed the "expressly forbidden" message. http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=111 Though now it's too long... the nag section requires some replanning so that it doesn't take 80% of the screen...

Thanks. Two more questions, would you like to link to the youtube/google video from the movie page? And if so should it be done from inside the Download Famtasia movie (.fmv) (date: 2004-07-06) Download AVI file via BitTorrent (size: 61 MB, length: 20:31) (currently unavailable) Read author's comments in submission #64 Discuss this movie Obsoletes movie #5 (21:52) Not rated — Rate this movie part or should it be editted in the description of the movie? If it is the latter I can start adding links to taipon's uploads now. And I should probaby contact taipon so he knows what is going on.

A bit interesting is that I've found a few YouTube videos which keeps the TAS info and has it in the Videoinfo page. Example

Mazzic: that's taipion, already mentioned in this thread. There have been a lot of discussion already about this, for example here (youtube) and here (google videos). I can't believe nobody mentioned these links.

Ah I should have looked around better before making this topic. So it looks like people are already doing a good job uploading to youtube and google video with proper description. All that is left to do is to is possibly link to them from our site, and to keep up the uploading of new videos. Some videos link to a DL from archive.org. Can editors be given the ability to link to youtube/google video in this area too?
