After seeing your awesome work with this game, I think that you are an ideal player to make an awesome TAS of this masterpiece. I wonder if, after a break of more than two years, you have considered resuming this project or starting from scratch to create a movie without resets. I am aware that free time tends to decrease as age increases, so I doubt it...

Yeah, would be interesting to see a TAS of this whole game. But if you search on youtube, Wyster seems to have done most levels already though: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=perfect+dark+tas&aq=f I invented a new custom combat simulator challenge recently, since playing against 8 dark sims was too easy for TAS. I call it 'meatsim challenge'. Basically, you are in a team of 4 meat sims against a team of 4 dark sims, so the dark sims (i changed the type into 'speedsims' to make them even harder) keep slaughtering the meat sims which makes them gain points really fast. Here's demonstration of it played normally without tool-assistance (i highly doubt it's possible to beat it without tools): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byyLPEpai14 And here's the TAS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWjmVtsB0ew

A no-reset run is still impossible as far as i know. And well, i do at times have a descent amount of free time, and i just haven't had much interresting in TAS'ing or Perfect Dark for a while. If i'm gonna do anything this year it'll prolly be continuing the Goldeneye TAS. That one is WAAAY better and the run should've been up on this site a long time ago.

Nice videos. I hope to see more in the future.

Why do you think that it would be better?

It's better quality wise. In PD i hardly spent any time perfecting or redoing a level while in GE me and Simon spent days redoing everything and manipulating stuff like mad. If i were to redo PD run, i could probably shave off quite alot of time, in GE however, more than 1 second would be astonishing.

Defection - Agent - 0:31 WR on this level is 6 seconds, but this is done without a glitch that makes you fall through the whole building/level. The best that has been done without TASing and glitching on this level is is 33.

Can someone reupload Wysters m64? The old links are dead. He stopped TASing after Crash Site. I make TASes of random levels sometimes, like this Defection Agent 5.48 (0.33s improvement of Wysters time), so I could help the progress slightly if I use his m64 if I happen to want to make Pelagic II PA TAS for some reason. There's only 9 levels left on his TAS (or 8, because Duel is so short anyway).

I think i have them at home, i can send tommorrow if you haven't gotten them by then. Anyway, since the m64 can't be playbacked properly from beginning you're gonna need savestates for each individual level. For example: Villa probably can't be playbacked from beginning but may work if savestate is loaded from extraction or investigation. However every level works if it's own savestate is loaded so the villa savestate always runs villa fine but doesn't guarantee anyting after that. Btw, i think the run aimed to only beat Skedar ruins and nothing else, can't be sure though. So 5 levels left then :p

Oh, if it doesn't play from the beginning, I wonder if it can get accepted on tasvideos... but maybe there's someone who can get it to play. I think BKdj or whatever his name was got it to play from the beginning since he made an avi of the full wip. The bonus stages could be left out, yes, like it was done on Goldeneye. Duel would be a pain to unlock, heh.

Oh yeah right, it seemed to synch better when recording avi. Doesn't work for normal playing though. Dunno what the rules for this case is :p I'll see if i can upload the files again...

Thanks, the save state started at Crash Site and synced until Pelagic 2, so if someone feels like it, they could continue the TAS from there. Pelagic 2 isn't really my favorite levels in the game, heh, and neither are some of the others like Attack ship. I uploaded the m64 on microstorage so it doesn't expire again: link

Infiltration Agent 1:10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JXEmyuNW2g WR on this level is 1:11. Agent times are a lot more maxed than the times in the harder difficulties, which is why I could only improve this by 1 second.

I made one level for wysters discontinued TAS. Pelagic II in 1:39: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ysUmJ8PIKE It's 18 seconds faster than WR. I let the guards put on the alarm so that they might open some doors for me. Normally it would be too risky on PA, but in TAS it's no problem. I had a slightly different scientist strategy at 0:32. It saves some time to just open the door and let him see me so that I can take him later. I like the laptop gun, it's one of the few guns in PD that is made of metal instead of plastic. The guards are pretty insane on this level/difficulty, one CMP150 burst can pretty much kill you. The exact time is about 1:39.2, I think. Next up is Deep Sea. If someone is interested in doing that, here's the m64 and save state: http://www.mediafire.com/?uu8c4hvvs7ooerw (it's the same that wyster uploaded, but his link had expired)

Heh very nice :) Did all that time come from optimization? :X (Didnt see any TAS-only stuff) All remaining levels should be interesting as well ;D

Awesome, great job :) Can't think of any bigger ways of improving that. Deep Sea should be pretty easy i think, not too much manipulation to be done there. With TAS like beginning(falcon style :)) it shouldn't be hard to get an optimal Elvis. After that it's just strafing pretty much.

Yeah, most time is saved because of optimization, because it's a pretty complex, long and hard level for non-TAS. I'm not sure what you mean by TAS-only but there are those things I mentioned which they don't do in WR runs; different scientist strat and letting the guards put on alarm. The scientist strat could be useful in non-TAS too though. Thanks wyster, also. Are you interested in doing Deep Sea or perhaps CI Defense? That's a pretty good level, not all slimy and green like Deep Sea. BTW, speed isn't so important in the beginning because you have to wait for Elvis anyway, right? So you wouldn't need to use Falcon necessarily, but I probably would anyway.

Well usually Elvis speed depends a bit on your own speed, faster start = better potential for fast elvis. I'm not sure if i'll find the motivation to do another TAS for this but i'll think about it.

Yeah, it's a pretty hard game to TAS because of variable framerate, desyncs and hard luck manipulation. Btw, the headshot address for PD is 00966AC8. It can be useful sometimes.

Another level for wysters TAS: Deep Sea PA 2:46 21 seconds faster than WR. 14 seconds was saved because of faster Elvis. I also used a little different strat in the room with the 5 green exploding green tanks, shooting two of them with one shot instead of one. It looks like it would be easy to do, but it requires a lot of precision unless you use the rail gun effect. Enabling alpha blending in the graphics plugin helped slightly in detecting the invisible guys. Strangely, I don't seem to be needing any resets like wyster did. Even CI Defense starts without having to reset. Only 3 levels left now. If wyster or someone else wants to do CI defense: m64: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/774242846/wysters%20perfect%20dark%20tas%20%28use%20antids-mupen%29.m64 Save state: http://www.mediafire.com/?uu8c4hvvs7ooerw (same as before)

Looking good! I enjoyed the Farsight use, and rapid-fire headshots never get old.

The reset thing is entirely random. I think i've had 2-3 levels work fine in a row at some point too. Gonna watch Deep sea now :) Edit: Looked excellent, nice job.

I started doing CI Defense, but it seems like they got so lucky with the hostages in the WR runs (1:37) that it can't even be done with TAS, so I doubt I'll be able to finish this (unless I want to get a crappy time). The only room where you have to manipulate luck is the first one, and there's only two hostages, but they both have to survive or get knocked out (survive). The guards have 18 times more health than the hostages, and 16 times better weapons, so it's kinda like one chance in 240 (which means I would have to do that manipulation part 240 times). I searched for a memory address that shows how many hostages have died (3 dead means you fail), it's 00966d00 type: byte. It's useful but it's still impossible. The WIP: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1841528931/wysters%20perfect%20dark%20tas%20%28use%20antids-mupen%29.m64 I might make a video of this WIP after summer if i haven't finished this level yet. Well, I didn't look much forward into Attack Ship anyway, it's my least favorite level.

CI Defense 1:31 | m64 lol, forget what I said earlier about the hostages. They were easy as hell, I was just doing it wrong. This run only 6 seconds faster than WR because you have to wait for Carrington's speeches before you can complete the level. I could have gotten 1:30 if I had used the out of bounds glitch at the beginning (saves 0.6 seconds), but I didn't know about it back then. I just used it for show at the end, it didn't save any time. I used the boost (slow motion) because it speeded up some of the texts, in case someone is wondering why that would be necessary in a TAS. Also, I think 00AD4CAC (unsigned short) is the memory address for the ingame timer (I'm not entirely sure, I haven't tested its accuracy).

Attack Ship 2:57 I still haven't needed to do any resets. Skedar Ruins starts without a reset too. It seems like it can be manipulated with luck, because sometimes the next level starts, and sometimes it doesn't.
