Not all people here follow hacking sites so I wanted everyone to know that there is finally a complete ALttP hack out there. Check it out. At Acmlm's board (Screenshots here). At romhacking.net. EDIT: Maybe I should've linked to the homepage of the hack, too. The people at Acmlm's board are bashing the hack for having many bugs but they don't seem that severe to me. They are also complaining about the annoyingly difficult and long-winded introductory dungeon that you apparently have to do mostly swordless, but to me the hack sounds pretty sweet. Some of the whinebags also complain about backtracking and illogical item placement but I guess they have never played a Zelda game before. I haven't tried it out properly yet myself, but from what I've read it has an extremely inventive and beautiful overworld. This has got to be a treat for any Zelda fan, even if it is a bit difficult.

Well maybe the "whinebags" are right.

Well I did read the entire thread and the impression that they were complaining about nothing just because they got a little frustarted by one single part of the game got stronger every page. As I said, I haven't really tried it yet but the way some people are complaining in the thread is extremely annoying.

Someone complained about bad level design. That's so common in these hacks, I tend to believe it. Also, what is it with making these hacks ungodly-difficult? Can't people make fun levels that aren't too frustrating? Oh well. I haven't even played this hack at all, so take what I say with a pint of salt. I'm talking more about ROMhacks in general.

The tool used for making ALttP hacks is not a very good one and changing a minor detail in room A can lead to shit hitting the fan in rooms B, C and D. Also the editor tends to destroy your progress completely sometimes when saving.

I guess the reason is that since the people who make these hacks to begin with are huge fans of the original game, they've probably played the originals to death and thus consider them easy, and when they make hacks, they probably tend to make them harder than the originals without even realizing it.

I think it's a very tough skill to be able to develop a widely liked learning curve to any game - it's probably much easier on the designer to just make things harder.

Yes, I think that's pretty much it. Also, when you are designing a level for a game, obviously you test it a lot along the way, and that makes you get super-duper good at that level. As a level designer, one must distance themselves from their own skill and try to see the level through the eyes of someone who hasn't played it before. Or something like that. Of course, that is still no excuse for the common "one hit and you're dead and you must start FROM THE BEGINNING MWAHAHA" fetish. Edit: Still, one must give some credit to the effort that must have gone into making this. It takes a great deal of dedication to follow through with such an immense hack. I will try it out at some point.

I am going to try this hack. I've been itching to try a "new" Zelda Game since The Wii was released. This will do until I can get Twilight Princess. :3

With so many hacks being discussed, I wish it was easier to tell what games were hacks and what games weren't, because only non-hacked games are worth discussing without lots and lots of identifiers to point out that this is a hack and that serious gamers wouldn't dare waste their time. Perhaps adding (HACK) to the end of the thread subject (which already included the word "hack") would make this more clear in the future. I mean, THIS IS A HACK?? THE WOOL HAS BEEN PULLED OVER MINE EYEBALLZ

Well. I wish I had known the save function didn't work before trying it. Oh well. I'll just start over a little later. I think this Hack will be worth playing. Like what I have seen so far.

tried it, did the first level until i got the boomerang and stopped playing; had to go back and forth about 4 or 5 times in that short amount of time

I just can't find a key to get the Sword with, heh. Got the Big Key finally. I just wish the Save Function worked. Would make things a lot easier for when I needed Bombs or something...

Savestates worked wonders through this. Thing is, I ended up not being able to get the boomerang, since opening the way to the church closed off the rest of the sewers. The maker of this didn't think of everything when he was designing the levels--you have to kill a guy to get a key, but only after you get a sword, and yet the four bombs you pick up in Kakariko do the trick just nicely instead. Not that it changes anything--even with all the pots lying around, you'd have to be able to refill your bombs somehow just to get out if you didn't want the sword, and that's not possible, as far as I can tell. Unless you can pick up more than 4 by reentering the place you got the bombs, I didn't think to check. But yeah. I wonder if the chest key you get for the boomerang also works on that one chest way back when in the guardtower. Also, this guy could really use having someone go through and fix all the english problems. Not that it REALLY matters, but there are just so many problems, conversation after conversation, that it just gets annoying. But from what I saw, I really like where this one is going. Hopefully there isn't too much huge backtracking like was required just to get ONE more key from the wine cellar (and then going BACK to the cellar again later) throughout the game, that's just cheap.

Yeah, the author has pretty much admitted that the beginning is kind of a mess and I think I read (it's a long thread) that he has promised to improve it in the future. Everyone's saying that it improves towards the end though, which is the reason I posted this.

Ehum... I seem to have some major problems here... I have got the Big Key in the first dungeon. But when I'm trying to open the big chest with it, it says that I haven't got the big key anyway :O. Is it another key I need or is this an annoying bug? EDIT: Or do I maybe have to kill some guys with bombs to continue? I ruined my bombs in the dungeon on enemies + the cracked walls. EDIT AGAIN: Whatever, haha, I found a hidden button on the floor ;D.

Saving works, but only after you get the sword. Part of how the original game code worked. There are two types of big keys. One for doors, one for chests. In the end though, this is just a hard hack. It's easy to make things hard, but hard to make things GOOD.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

Yeah, you can re-enter the area repeatedly for a maximum of 10 bombs. Did the creator of the hack really not intend for you to use bombs in the guardhouse? I guess it makes that level a little easier...

I thought AnotherGamer was a whinebag? ;p As for the grammar. The hack was released something like 10 days ago. If a TAS is to be done; wait until the next version (aka bug fix) has been released. All the other accepted hacks aren't version 1.0.

Lots of official NES games had grammar and spelling mistakes, too. The base will explod in 60 seconds.

Okay I just reached the church and I have to say I don't understand what the people at Acmlm's board are griping about. The guardhouse isn't really that difficult if you take it slowly and carefully. There was some backtracking, yes, but it's not like the game made you repeat some annoying parts over and over again. It's just walking. People should learn some patience. I also can't understand how anyone can miss the boomerang. Don't people explore the dungeons at all? Is it just about getting to the end?

I didn't know I reached the end until after I was there and the way behind was blocked up! I thought I WAS exploring. I played more today, turns out there's absolutely no way in that I could find, since the cellar passage closes back up. Meh. No biggie. Eventually got through the first dungeon, with all the swimming, and it just seemed very very short. The two keys were right next to each other and the chest, and then I found the boss and killed it. I liked the idea of using the moth boss as the first boss, since, without the spikes and moving floors, he really is very easy, so it's a smart way to be different and yet have that difficulty curve.
