You should use Photobucket for storing your pictures, otherwise your allowed Geocities traffic drains up fast.

Oh... Thanks for the heads up. Yeah so this game seems cool. I am very lazy so nobody wait on me to do this game.

Bump. This game requires a map to be TASed well, I'm reminding PJ we had some plans on mapping it.

Hahaha were you actually serious about wanting to TAS this, feos? I was hoping you weren't, because I don't want to have to redo my run again... But yea, I can add these maps to the list of things that I need to do for you. I'm already way behind on those! Sorry. :(

Is there any kind of debug mode or something that prevents rotation and allows to fly through the map? If so, I can do something myself.

Yes, that is actually exactly what I would use to do it. Haha. Here is a list of passwords you can use (all passwords are entered from the title screen): 940710: Debug mode 890493: Level 1-2 490956: Level 2-1 921115: Level 2-2 900370: Level 3-1 130281: Level 3-2 926899: Level 4-1 099870: Level 4-2 976854: Level 5-1 175089: Level 5-2 052195: Level 6-1 007327: Level 6-2 406957: Level 7-1 469862: Level 7-2 495133: General Headslot (Final boss....but the map is the same as 1-2 but with a different spawn point/palette) When debug mode is activated, you can press A+Y to turn into a cursor and move around the screen. As a cursor, you can do a bunch of stuff like placing new enemies/CDs/exits/etc, but flying around is the most important part for mapping out the levels. All sprites are still active in this mode, so the CDs and enemies/checkpoints/powerups will all still be visible (and some enemies will still chase the cursor!). Some of the checkpoints and powerups do not display correctly in this mode, but all the small CDs do.

Perfect! Having a complete map it would be trivial to TAS, comparing to keeping all in mind.

Yes, but keeping all in mind is much more fun. Haha.

So I tried out this game after watching PJ's run at GDQ. I am not certian that this is optimal yet and I will probably not continue with it until PJ releases the maps, but it was still fun to try out. Will be making an encode soon, but here's the file for now: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/52599016087155685

Only watched the first 30 seconds, but there are already a few things I should explain I think. First, vertical speed is always increased by pressing towards a wall. This is true of both jumping and falling. You fall faster and jump faster/higher when hugging a wall. During the first fall in 1-1 you should hug the wall. Second, if you turn into a spike ball with Y, you cannot interact with collectibles. Since the big CDs do nothing except change the music and have a load time, the TAS should ideally not collect any of those. You can definitely spike ball jump through that first big CD in 1-1 without losing as much time as the music change. I collect it in my runs because the starting track for this game is agonizing and I would play worse if I had to listen to it for the entire run. Worthy sacrifice for me, but not for the TAS. :P I told you yesterday in chat, but for those who weren't there, I dumped perfect maps of the game with gravity fields included. I'll be making an interactive map viewer for my website when it is done being migrated/upgraded. Will likely not be done for another week or so. The maps don't have the CDs included, but the gravity fields will be useful for planning "slingshots" which the TAS will definitely want to be using. It'll also have the destinations of every pipe and teleporter, as well as CD thresholds and warp destinations. For some of the stages I looked into in more detail, I made a crude outline of all the CD clusters to make it easier to visualize. I'll make those public as well. I'll give more thoughts as they come to me!

I haven't checked, but I can already say that it'd not a bad thing to pick it if it improves the overall impression. We have a tag for time/entertainment trade-offs.

I want to point out that I asked staff if this would count against the tas time and it shouldnt. we have categories for Speed/Entertainment tradeoffs on the site and while yes it could be faster to avoid them, I feel like not being able to change music would cause this movie to be not fun to watch. and yeah, I agree the first track is not very good.

I dont plan on doing any more of this game until you do publish those maps. I was just really wanting to do a quick WIP of the first level just to get a feel of the game's controls for now. Thank you for spending so much time into routing this game by the way. I really enjoyed your run at GDQ and I really see some potential in a TAS for it.

Oh ok, yea if they're fine with that sort of tradeoff, then I absolutely support grabbing that big CD. Hahaha.

It was my pleasure! When I have some more time, I'll share some of my timing notes for warp pathing, etc. There are some discussions to be had about what category you're planning (warp vs warpless), and the routes for the warp path. CD collection in the bonus levels will be a tremendous pain to optimize... I'm really curious to see how a TAS can utilize the gravity to slingshot around corners instead of constantly running, and how many enemies can be avoided or run through. There are some crazy physics in this game that are simply not possible to fully take advantage of in real time. My general stage routes are pretty good, but I think a TAS might be able to do some more creative things. Another thing I want to mention before I forget about it is the "remote collection" glitch. If you use the explosion attack (X) while you have a powerup and the powerup expires during its animation, Mohawk collects everything on screen instantly and returns to his normal state. With some clever pathing and powerup routing, you should be able to end near a high density CD cluster and collect them all at once. I have only one planned use of that in only one category, but there are a few other places where it'd be useful if you could manage it well.

sounds good. I am actually right now experimently the lag reduction. you can apparently reduce quite a bit by going into a spiked ball in certain places. I am not sure why this happens, maybe less sprite slots for the game to use?

I guess this thing is complete now? https://www.thesupersnes.tv/compendium/mohawk/maps/ It'd blow my mind even harder if it allowed to download a PNG with layers you've enabled.

OH! I'm so sorry, I forgot to update here when it was done. Yes, the map viewer is finished! The reason I don't have downloadable maps yet is because I really didn't want to create and upload 6144x5440 resolution maps for every combination of layers. That's also why I didn't upload them to vgmaps or somewhere else. If there is one or two common combinations that you'd like (i.e. just background+gravity) then I can put them together and upload them.

Ah I see. The neatest solution would be generating the PNGs on the fly, but that requires a coder to implement it. Otherwise, I think versions with everything enabled would be the best to download. Anyway, how are you hosting them if they aren't already images?

This is awesome news. I do have to ask though, would the route I took for the first world be ok enough to continue with? Also should I be going for a warpless run or a warps run? I only have information about warpless because of the GDQ run having commentary on the route, but I’m completely blind in how warps work in this game.

They are hosted right now as layers, which are overlapped on each other in the widget. My coder apparently tells me that it is easy to do what you're asking, though. This is why I should ask before I assume! Hahaha. I'll let you know when the functionality is ready. Edit: EZgames, I think your route was good. It's really hard to say, though. I already gave it my best effort, so my perspective on route is always going to be a bit biased. Haha. As for warps vs warpless, do whatever you feel comfortable with! The later warpless stages will be a *beast* to try to optimize, so it might be easier to start with warps? As for warp info, there's a brief summary table here with CD threshhold: https://www.thesupersnes.tv/compendium/mohawk/#cd You can also see each portal and the CD reqs on the map viewer as you load a map. Warps themselves are pretty simple; they're just like exit portals. You collect enough CDs to make them open, you jump into them to end the level, and they'll take you to some different stage. Here's a link to my PB with warps, if you're interested in that route. I haven't listened to the commentary in awhile, but I imagine I talk about my justification for this warp route. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbn2ZPv1zd4
