Alright, I have decided. I will make a full run video of Super Mario World! I can't make it too fast because this isn't going to be JUST a speed run, but there's going to be a lot of fancy stuff going on too, so I might not always end with the absolute fastest time in the levels, but if that's the case, then there will be some action :D Let me know what you think, about the idea ^^^ - Volkov

I like the idea very much! Also, I don't care if you don't do the fastest time, when it's a full run. Take your time (ok, don't :) ) and make it the coolest SMW movie ever :D

Forget about the dragon coins, you don't need them. I think what most people would be interested in is a 96 exit run as fast as possible. Anyway, I'm about to watch your video now, and then I'll make comments on it. Edit: It won't let me download the smv you posted. Edit 2: Never mind, it works now. Edit 3: You lost 1 timeunit in YI3. (btw this is for the smv you posted here, I don't know about the new one) Edit 4: You lost 1 timeunit in 1IG. Edit 5: I don't remember exactly what my save state time in DP1 was without entering the pipe, but I know it was faster than yours. You took too long to get the cape at the beginning, you can just run to the right and jump just before you hit the enemy and you'll bounce off it, you don't need to wait for it to come up. Edit 6: You lost 2 timeunits in DS1. Edit 7: In DSH, you didn't do the glitch at the beginning that lets you fall through the ramp, which saves about 3 timeunits. However, even without the glitch you could have beaten the level 1 timeunit faster. Edit 8: You lost 3 timeunits in SW1. You lost 1 timeunit in SW2. You lost 1 timeunit in SW3. You lost 1 timeunit in BC. You lost approximately 11 timeunits in the whole game.

Next time, do us all in the IRC channel a favour and figure out what you want to write before posting.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

I got temporarily disconnected from the internet, because my brother was setting up for his LAN. Thanx for telling me about the times i slowed down on, it was only my first attempt!!! It would be nice if you could tell me how i 'lost' these timeunits, so that I might improve? Thanx - Volkov

Next time, do us all in the IRC channel a favour and figure out what you want to write before posting. Why should I do that? It's easier to edit my post again after each level. Anyway, unless the new version that Volkov made is significantly better, it looks like I'll have to do an SMW speed run myself. The only problem is that I need to have right shift as my pause button, so if there isn't any way to change that, hopefully someone (aka Blip) will be able to make a patch for me. Edit: It would be nice if you could tell me how i 'lost' these timeunits, so that I might improve? Ok, I'll be editting this post again soon and I'll tell you how to save time in each level. Edit 2: YI3: Always run across the moving platforms and never touch the backwards moving platforms. You can get 259. 1IG: When you get to the big fire pit, don't jump under the turtle, bounce off of it so you land on the grating as far to the right as possible. At the next big fire pit, jump as late as possible, just before you fall into the fire. Jump as far as you can, and grab onto the grating as late as possible, climb right for a split second, touch the ground, and start running. You can get to the door at 281. I saw someone say it's possible to get there at 282, but I haven't figured out how so I don't know if it's true. DP1: You don't need to wait for the enemy at the beginning to come up, just run forward at full speed and jump just before you hit it and you'll bounce off of it. At the end, I'm not sure because I was watching it at full speed, but I think you slowed down when you landed on the yellow pipe, so if you did then you should just fly over the green pipe. DS1: In the room where you get the shell, you could have started flying a split second earlier, but you didn't lose any timeunits there. In the place with the two fish and the P-switch, you don't need to slow down, just make sure you're higher up when you get there and the corner won't be in your way. In the area with the fish with a dragon coin over it, you swam up too slowly. First kill the fish by swinging your cape at it. Then throw the shell up, since you can swim up faster if you're not holding a shell. Catch the shell, and throw it up again, catch it and kill the fish. Swim forward and down, and when you get close to the block, drop the shell, fall down, and hit the block with your cape. This strategy is kind of complicated, but if done correctly you can finish at 258. DSH: At the beginning, you jumped before you reached full speed. You also delayed too much when passing the ghosts. What you should do is start flying and then you'll be able to pass through the ghosts. I'm not sure why, but for some reason the ghosts will sometimes hurt you anyway, but just try a few times and you'll be able to fall through them. You can get to the first door at 387. I can't figure out how to do the glitch, but if you can get it to work it should save you another 3 timeunits. SW1: As you fall through the gap, you should tap left so you don't hit the corner (though this probably only saves a few frames so it's not so important). You started the spin jump a little too late. When you get pushed down, you shouldn't fall onto the ground, if done correctly you can fall onto the blocks below. Then when you got pushed through the second set of blocks, you got pushed too far to the left, so you then had to waste time going to the right to get the key. You can finish at 290. SW2: Same trick as in DS1. To avoid getting slowed down by the corner, throw yoshi up and then catch him. You can finish at 260. SW3: You took too long to grab the key. You also might have started flying too late but I'm not sure about that. You can finish at 192. BC: In the door 5 area, you could have ran under one more spiked thing. You can get to the door at 374. Besides all those mistakes that lost timeunits, there were also some minor mistakes where you just weren't accurate enough.

Quite a few of them were fixed up in my second version that I made, like the SW1 I think...and also in bowser's castle going under 1 more Spiked pole block in room #5... thanx for the help, I'll remake a vid and see if I can ifnish with those times, make myself proud! - Volkov

this is somewhat out of place now, but mfried's question went unanswered. is there any way to make the hotkeys for pause, quickload, or quicksave something other than the defaults? they're so ridiculously out of the way

Also it would be really nice to be able to change slowdown and speedup. These (and the things Blechy mentioned) are the main things that are keeping me from time-attacking SNES games right now.

Yeah, being able to change the save and load keys would also make things more convenient, but they're not absolutely necessary, since I can just pause and then reach over to where the save and load keys are. However, if I can't the pause key, then there's absolutely no way I'll be able to make a good speed run. Edit: thanx for the help, I'll remake a vid and see if I can ifnish with those times, make myself proud! Btw, what speed do you play at? You might be able to save another second or two just by being more accurate even if it doesn't save any timeunits, so I would recommend playing at 15% speed or less. Edit 2: Quite a few of them were fixed up in my second version that I made Can you upload that new version so I can see it now instead of having to wait for it to be published? For some reason I'm not able to login at Bisqwit's site so I can't get it from the submissions page.

We will wait the fastest run to publish it. I don't want to encode then reencode 1 day later.

Yeah, I've got a faster run coming... I've done everything so far (I think) absolutely the fastest way possible (I bet people can pick flaws though :P) Just one question, what's the Secret House Ghost Glitch You're talking about? Other than that I can do everything you've mentioned if not faster, I'm pretty sure... Hope You can explain it... - Volkov

Well if I had been able to figure out how to do the glitch then I could explain it, but I haven't been able to do it. The only way I know it exists is that I've seen people talking about it. The glitch involves falling through the ramp at the beginning. I'll see if I can find any explanations of how to do the glitch online, and if I find any I'll post the links here. http://users.erols.com/bainbri/glitch/indexfr.html Out of all 4 pages they didn't mention it, and neither has a few pages I've been to, I'm doubting it's existance, But I'll keep looking... - Volkov

The glitch is not fake! I just performed it myself. The only problem is that I did it as little Mario, so I'm not sure if it also works when you're cape Mario. I was playing in ZSNES and I put A on autofire, I ran towards, the ramp, and I held down A. Mario spin jumped a few times and then just before he reached the top of the ramp he fell through.

I just read what _Metroid_ wrote more carefully, and if I understand him correctly you need to switch to fire Mario to be able to do the glitch. Since I don't know if this glitch would save more time or lose more time, you should try out both. First make a copy of the smv. Then beat DSH the way you normally would with cape Mario. Then play the copy of the smv, and this time you'll switch to fire Mario. The best time to switch would probably be in DS1 in the area with the fish with the dragon coin above it, and since you won't be moving right for a second anyway it won't waste to much time to wait for the flower to come down. The best time to switch back to the cape would probably be in DSH just before you step on the P-switch, since the cape will have time to come down when you go left to the P-switch and then back right.

That's really helpful. It doed mean I have to backtrack a bit and yeah...I did that part with the fish above the dragon coin pretty well, too, oh well have to re-do it while pressing select in the mix :P I'll probably be done in an hour or whatever, I'm working on it pretty slowly, and I bet you're be able to beat the result hands-down :( None-the-less, I'm giving it a go, I'll post the results of what is faster, soon...cya - Volkov

Wow, those were some great runs there, Volkov. Already finished 7 seconds faster than my run, with plenty of room for improvement.

Wow, some of those times I never thought were possible. Though is it really faster to take the pipe route in Donut Plains 1?

It depends how you do it, if you spent as much time as you can flying I think it might just be faster...I havn't actually tested it, but I've slightly compared time, and I think The pipe route (while flying as much as you can, like I do, in and out of the pipe, makes it faster... I am still working on another run of "entire game" so keep your eyes peeled! - Volkov

Hmm, I just did a frame count comparing the pipe route to finishing with a time of 362. And skipping the pipe is nearly 3 seconds faster, assuming I did my math correctly. >_>
