Should it be possible for everyone to see how someone else has rated movies (every movie separately)?
If possible, please explain your opinion.
NOTE: THIS IS ABOUT MOVIE RATINGS, NOT SUBMISSION VOTES.
EDIT 2: Poll is over, option "settings to be voluntary" won the favor. Further votes won't help. Use "view results" to view results if you haven't voted.
Of course they should be public!
You should be proud of the ratings you give, since they reflect your opinion. I'd sure be interested to see how some members are giving grades.
No, but I do think there should be a field that you fill out stating your reason before voting. But even that could be abused. Hey, at least we could potentially know which "no" votes have no basis behind them.

In my opinion you shouldn't be able to see them. Some people would not feel comfortable about it. However I agree with below posters that there should be an option wether the rating is public or not.
My published movies

Even though I never rate movies, I don't see reason not to show ratings. It's not necessary, as none of people I know on this site would vote 1s to move some movie down as well as vote 10s just to raise favorite movie. I would like to see how others voted to understand their interests though. That's my 5 cents ^^
EDIT: Also, I agree with Baxter's point.
They shouldn't. Or, it should be done voluntarily.
Many people might feel uncomfortable about invading their privacy, and won't rate because of it, or fall under peer pressure even more than they probably already have.
EDIT: Since the "voluntary" option was added already after my vote, I asked to undo my vote (previously for undisclosure), and re-voted for that option.
DK64_MASTER: I think you misunderstood. This thread is about rating published movies, not about voting on submissions.
I think that ratings should be public. If you're not willing to stand by the ratings you give, you shouldn't be rating anything.

I think this is meant to be for rating movies that are already published, not voting on current submissions.
EDIT: wow, 3 people beat me to it in 2 minutes.
I don't really have a stance, because I think that the ratings aren't that useful, but it could just be because I don't check a movie's rating out that often before I view it. If it sounds interesting, I'll watch, and a somewhat arbitrary number doesn't sway me one way or the other. Especially today when I found out that there's a member who has voted for nearly 380 movies and rated all of them 10s (unless there's a glitch in the profile statistics calculator). That type of bias leads me to distrust the ratings quite a bit.
I don't see why not, to be honest. It would be easier for someone to spot out if someone is being ridiculous with voting. Hundreds of eyes are better than one. If you're not mature to handle someone's negative reviews, then that's their problem. I'm pretty sure most of us have enough maturity to handle this.
I agree with moozooh's points. I think it would make some people not want to rate, and I think it would make some people rate movies inaccurately just to stay within the "normal" range.
I don't see any downside to having an option of displaying your ratings if you want to though, so I voted "it should be voluntary". Otherwise, no.

That's the point I don't get. I mean I get it but how can it be the point? One should not rate movie like if maximum was 15 and minimum was 4 when maximum is 10 and minimum is 1. 10 is for perfect. 1 for worst ever. anything else goes to normal range.
Changing your voting pattern because people know what you vote... sounds somehow weird to me. The only reasons I can think of why people would change the ratings they gave is because they gave some totally unreasonable ratings, which couldn't be justified... and if these people are going to stop rating, or change their ratings because of the fact that it's made public... then I'd say it's another reason to make it public.
A highly rated only proves that its a popular well known game, the Mario movies are among the highest rated on the site yet there often obseleted by surprising amounts. Although I will say that you only really notice mistakes when you get down to frame advance level.
Personally I think it should be volutary to make ratings public, but perhaps mandatory to make votes public, or at least make people post before there vote is counted.
z,
Here's an example to show what I mean. A movie is rated at 9.0 after 36 votes. "Normal" range is 8-10.
Another quick example. A movie is rated at 7.4 after 48 votes. "Normal" range is 7-8.
Let me know if you need more clarification.

It's weird, but that's how it is with any purely subjective evaluation. Normally a good intention (making irresponsible or heavily biased people not to vote) might result in a destructive outcome:
1) peer pressure (and as a result, more bias instead of the otherwise);
2) the more sensitive a person is, the more negatively they would probably think about those who rated a certain movie unjust in their opinion.

there's no sense in making people register just to basically say "lol X movie rules/sucks," go for it
edit: ah wait, misinterpreted the topic, well in that case people should get to choose whether their votes are public

I say go for it. I have rated a fairly large number of the movies here, and I can safely say that I stand by every rating I have ever put down.
Another option would be to make them viewable only by the person who authored the movie, so that they at least know what people think of it. (Kinda defeats the purpose of the thread though, I think.)

I can't believe you're right.
Anyway, I did consider voting for public ratings, but after reading the above, decided to vote for voluntary.
