Just wondering if it's possible to use DOSbox to run, say, a commodore 64 emulator for TAS purposes. If so, what would be needed? Would the emulator and the rom need to be in the same directory? For playback, a person watching would obviously require the exact same version of the C64 emulator as well as the dosbox emulator. Would the C64 emulator have to have the exact same configuration? It seems grossly complicated to do this, but it's possible, right?

In any case, we don't accept runs of games run under emulators run under emulators.

Okay, well, that answers my question, I guess :p I suppose I can always make an unofficial TAS and record an AVI of it. Maybe if people can see a really cool TAS of a commodore game it might encourage someone to work on a rerecording C64 emulator.

Ask Xebra about TASing w/ an emulated emulator, he'll sing you a sad song (not saying it's anyone's fault, it's just unfortunate is all)

If you want to make a C64 TAS, you should probably look here http://www.c64-longplays.de.vu/, it seems they have a C64 emulator with basic TAS functions.

Nice. Any idea how feasible it would be to expand on the recording support to allow for the sort of stuff we do on this site?

It seems they only have one save-state slot, it doesn't have a "start from reset" type of recording and i'm not really sure about slowdown/frame advance. Also the save/load state seems to be somewhat unstable, at least what I understood from their tutorial. You should probably download newest version of WinVice(its the emu they are using) and check the documentation.
