Did a quick search and didnt see a topic, so here we go. I wonder if it would be possible to complete level 256 as a TAS, or even at all. Also, do any of the other Pac-Man games (say NES or SNES) have the 256 glitch? I think it would be an interesting run to watch, but doubt it would even be considered here (if even possible) due to 255 levels needing to be played to get to 256. Thoughts?

Well, if level 256 is really entertaining, you can always make a run that starts from a savestates that goes to level 256. I haven't played level 256, so I don't know what it is that makes it interesting. Oh, and this topic should probably go to the NES-section. We are talking about Pac-man for NES here, right?

neither did I, but typing "pacman 256" at google video provided the answer: the graphics glitch up.

Not sure that would work all that well as a TAS, seeing as how well this game can be played by hand... The tas wouldnt add much to the non-assisted speedruns.

The point is that noone has finished level 256 in arcade version because the split screen error. So, could a TAS finish this level or is it impossible to complete?
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

From wikipedia, it seems possible to beat it and go to next level. I recommend you to read it. Also. I think it may be interesting to see it in a TAS.

A TAS would be made, imo, for the whole "It IS possible to beat 256, and this video will show you" deal... due to not being humanly possible to beat the level (proven by no one getting the $100,000 reward offered).

That would be CrazY!! Edit: Are the levels after that glitched up too? How far does the game go up to anyway?

So "CrazY" you gotta capitalize the "Y"!

No one knows, no one has ever beaten 256 ;) It WOULD be freakin' awesome if there was a 257... although I am sure it would look pretty f'd up :P

Just to prove it can be beaten is enough to make a video of that.

Well I just contacted Marcus http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/file/589548/43959 who wrote this faq, and am awaiting a reply. I asked him if there is ANY way to skip levels, or if a runner would have to play all if the levels in order... here is hoping that you CAN skip levels. Also, I looked for faqs for the NES Pac-Man and the one I looked into said there was only 8 levels in the game ;_; No rerecording with nes, i suppose.

Sorry for the double post. The writer of the FAQ, Marcus, had this to say: "Officially, there are no cheat codes or anything to skip levels, but using emulation there are ways to do things such as making a stage clear as soon as it appears by not allowing the dots to appear. I don't know a lot about emulation, though, or hacking the game's programming, so this was just something I've happened to have read before and remembered. [^^Would that be a debug feature or something else within the MAME program that could make the dots not appear, or would someone have to make an actual hacked rom that does not allow levels 1-255 to load the dots, and then level 256 to show the dots and make the player clear the board, thus completing the level ?] Supposedly, people have used this to reach and actually complete round 256, and after completing it, the game just resets to round 1, though the ghosts stay at the top speed, and I'm not sure if you keep your score. But there have been no videos of it like you guys are thinking of making, so maybe you could try it out if you can figure out how to do the ROM stuff." I plan to do some google searching for any ROMs or hacks that dont allow the circles to load up, and will post whatever I happen to find (of course, I won't post a ROM, if it exists ;) ) EDIT: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=69005 has some nice info, of particular note are the post that seems to be a book (5+ paragraphs) and on page 2 there is some code about "where the error occurs", however not being a programmer it is all gibberish XD

This might be a good place to ask. Be sure to download their cheats.dat file first, though.

I see that most games seem to have numbers that are like 256 (2^8).

Maybe it was encoded in lag numbers?

Take it easy, JXQ. He's young. Computers like numbers like 2^8, 2^16, 2^32 because computers operate in binary, and the number of possible combinations with x bits is 2^x. What JXQ was (not really) pointing out is that 2^8 is 256 and 2^16 is 65536.

If he's old enough to understand the concept, he's old enough to double check it on a calculator.

Good news, that cheat.dat has two options for the Pacman (midway) version rom that I am using. First, by pressing tab and selecting dip switches you can select the cheat option, which does load up the level and then you instantly win it. The next cheat, under driver configuration, lets you use 2x speed... thus you can get through levels relatively quickly. Sadly, there is nothing that tells the player what level they are on/viewing so it is basically a waiting game. Once I get to level 256 i will post a save file for any interested. EDIT: For some reason mame lets me save a state, but not load it ;_;

You mean 255.... right? 256 usually doesn't happen for "most games" :)
