Who needs a TAS to get a perfect score? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Mitchell_(gamer) I have seen the actual machine referenced here.

I figured if anyone could have done it, it was him, seeing as how he actually played it as far as it would go.

5 people have gotten perfect pacman scores to my knowledge, unless you can surpass level 256. Billy mitchell was awesome though because it states he used no set patterns, meaning it was just incredible skill instead of just memorization. I think the others that got the perfect scores all used set patterns. I'd do the same though. If you guys figured out that you could get past 256 I'm sure there'd be a lot of people going after the record again.

As a previous post stated, there are cheats that let you skip levels... but for some reason my MAME wont let me load from a savestate, evidentally it was corrupted. Whether or not this is the cheat file's fault is unknown, but is there anyone 1337 enough with MAME to figure out wtf happened with the save file/offer a solution?

Well, if level 256 is really entertaining, you can always make a run that starts from a savestates that goes to level 256. I haven't played level 256, so I don't know what it is that makes it interesting. Oh, and this topic should probably go to the NES-section. We are talking about Pac-man for NES here, right?
My input will end up desyncing once I do so!

No, the arcade one. Sorry.

There's a dipswitch that auto-clears every board. Just set it and fast forward, snapshotting every now and then. It takes a minute or so tops.

Did you use patterns for your SMB1 runs? ;) On-topic I heard that one guy did actually beat 256. I'll see if I can find some info about it.

I don't think it was ever confirmed, only claimed.

Any progress with this? It shouldn't be too hard to get to 256 with that dip switch. But honestly I think it be best to figure to have a coding expert analyze the error so we can understand what kind level exists on the right half of the screen and decide whether it's possible or not. From the videos I've seen it's pretty weird and I could easily see it making dots you can't get to. I still think it'd be interesting to see perfect score done quick, or just some of perfect score pacman I can't find any videos about it. That's why Twingalaxies sucks, they shouldn't be able to claim records publicly without public proof.

It's been stated that the 256th board is unbeatable because it lacks enough pellets, even with several lives. If you had infinite lives, though, it might beatable by simply reusing the dots (they appear once you restart the level)

That's actually the exact site I got my information from (but couldn't be bothered to look it up again). Thanks. Assuming there are 9 pellets on the right side, it would take "(total number of pellets per board - pellets on unbroken side of screen) / 9" lives to complete. This is probably impossible unless you actually have some way to get more lives than is normally available.

Are there only 9 pellets on the right side? Not sure if this is possible but you might be able to have your score be the right amount so you get an extra life right after clearing the right side for the first time. Then maybe there's enough points to get another one. It looks you can have at least 6 lives from that video, so this would give you 7 or 8, almost enough.

I'm fairly sure the game stops dispensing free lives after the first three. I might be wrong.

Evidently i never posted my "findings" ^_^; Well, iirc, i did use a dipswitch to get to 256. once I got there i was unable to manually beat the level. when using the dipswitch, all of the pellets automatically disappear, thus making the game think pacman ate them all. i believe the dipswitch would allow level 256 to be beaten, however, if not using the switch [normal gameplay] the level is impossible. as said, this is all from a failing memory, so some things may not be 100% true... but i dont want to sit here and wait for 255 levels to be dipswitched again ;P anyone else is encouraged to try, though ;)

The dip-switch auto-clears the level and moves on. As I said before, in normal gameplay, it's impossible (9 dot objects exist). In abnormal, cheating gameplay (infinite lives), it is possible to complete. Of course, if you're going to cheat, you might as well just patch the ROM to fix the split-screen bug.

That's lame there's only 9 pellet memory addresses. Are you sure that it's always 9 and can never be different? If it's that simple (9*6=54<required amount) why was there all this fuss about people claiming to have beaten it and walter day going to see these people and a $100,000 reward? Also, of the supposed perfect games, did they also get all 9 pellets on the split screen 6 times or did they lose some lives in previous levels?

The mechanics of the split-screen have already been discovered. There are always 9. Also, if you checked, there was never any verification of it being beaten because it hasn't. The $100,000 prize was never awarded. The maximum possible score requires eating all 9 dots on every life. No lives can be lost though the normal levels.

I can't seem to get MAME to work. I DLed a zip file but it has no exe or recognizable file in it.
