Hey I'm looking for a Gmail invite! If someone would be so kind as to throw one to lil' ol' me. I'd be very happy and I'd also put up a banner promoting your site or your favorite site on all the sites that I administer. www.neopolitanmusic.com www.hughesdriveproductions.com www.bigcatreggae.com None of them are exactly high traffic, but its the best I can offer. Thanks!

Gmail would be Google's freemail service, in a sort of not-really-open-but-not-really-closed-either beta right now. To sign up you need to be invited in by someone else. Hotmail and Yahoo (I think) both expanded their storage in response to Gmail's free gig of email storage.

GMail provides one gigabyte of storage, but there's a price involved: your e-mail is read (electronically), information about you is stored, and ads are inserted inline with your e-mail text. There is also no clause protecting your information in the privacy agreement, so your e-mail could be sold or a government warrant can retrieve all the e-mail you've ever received or sent.
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

Not to sound bitter, but how is that different from the other two big freemails?

They give you ads based on demographics. They don't scan the text of your e-mail, record notes about word usage, and put ads inline with the text, and construct a profile of your e-mail activities (who you e-mail, waht you say, how they respond, etc). They also don't store any personally-identifyable information, like GMail does (for an INDEFINITE period of time, as well).

oh yeah, now i rememeber there was a big fuzz about it a while ago, although i havent really heard about it anymore recently. so why would you want gmail? i mean really, what do you need 1 gig of space for? yahoo indeed increased their box to 100 meg and 10mb attach (so thats why they did it, heh). but i use yahoo for my spam stuff (register here, register there, 700 spams weekly). or is it just to be cool? :)

Well, the UT league I help run lost our storage space for match demos... ... so 1 GB really helps :P

That + You can use Gmail with POP3 with a program called "Pop goes the Gmail". http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1088397932/1 So you get a gig of space that you can use with outlook or whatever pop3 email client. And you can access it anywhere! Gmail is neat, which is why I want it! :)

It's the same way LiveJournal used to work.

Well, I think GMail's a good thing(tm). Sure, they scan your mails for relevent adds. I don't mind, it's not like I'm gonna get teh pr0n adds. :-P Basically anything you don't want google to see shouldn't be done through email anyway. Secrets don't exist on the internet, but you can always encode your emails for some extra security. As for the elitist remark... it's not a club of people who work on an invite basis. GMail is still in the beta stage and they don't want a few million people registering 10 accounts straight away. The invite system means they only have to store a Gig of email for a few hundred thousand people at first which I think is a sensible thing to do.

by the way, not everyone who got an account is able to invite someone else. unlucky myself ... i cant invite anyone. so its kind of luck who can and who not.

You're supposed to get them every few days. However, gmail doesn't like me, so i haven't got a single one yet. Maybe its because i have three accounts and gmail doesn't like that. Anyway, I've had it for about a month and I still haven't got an invite. :(

Hello Eric, Thank you for your message. We apologize for the delayed response. Gmail is experiencing rapid growth. We have been working hard to keep pace with the popularity of our service while we respond to each individual message. Because Gmail is in a limited test period, we occasionally issue a small number of new user invitations to a randomly selected group of Gmail users. When Gmail issues invitations, a link that says 'Invite friends to join Gmail' appears along the left side of your Gmail account. The Gmail Team is gathering feedback and suggestions from our current users, and as we make progress with our service, we issue more invitations. We are unable to offer more invitations at this time. We appreciate your patience while we work to make Gmail generally available. Sincerely, The Gmail Team

invites have stopped 'spawning', which also means that unless youve got sociopathic friends, youre not getting into gmail until it goes public
