Selling computer games to minor will get you life NEW YORK has decided that people who flog adult ranked computer games to minors should be sent to jail for life. While you do not get jail for life for selling crack to kids, or beating one up, by a strange quirk of the US Justice system, selling a game to a kid could get you locked up until you drop. Lawmakers have decided that selling such games is now a serious crime, what over the pond they call a felony. Since New York has a three strikes rule, which was upheld in 2005, it means that if you commit three felonies, however important or not they are, you go to jail for life. More here. Honestly, this falls right under the first amendment. Freedom of speech, these games could be equivicated to nothing more than a crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper. It's a game and what you take from it is you're own interpretation. Responsibility should not be left to the government on whether a child can or can not watch something on tv, play a game, or listen to some music. This is lazy parent legislation and it just plain sucks for the rest of the country. Also one of the posters mentioned the eighth amendment as well which is absolutely right. Honestly, a felony for selling something that has in no way capability to be lethal. Unlike cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs. k, I'm done ranting. This sort of bad policy is what gets me all kinds of fired up.

Your post's quote is completely edited to sound different from your source. Specifically, the source notes that it's games with adult content that are illegal to sell to minors. This is very much the same as forbidding pornography sales to minors. I have no problems with it, really.

LMAO. It'll be ruled unconstitutional in a week.

So someone sells a 16yr old high school student resident evil and now you think they should spend 5 years in jail?

Three strikes laws in general are not a good idea, but especially not in conjunction with a crime that really ought to be no more than a misdemeanor.

There are also knives, shovels, plastic bags, toothpicks… It's rather trivial to kill a man with a toothpick, provided you have enough freedom of movement to insert it deeply into their ear canal or eye socket or other unprotected spots of the human body. Do toothpicks need to have special approval now because of that? Enforcing punishment for selling something that has life-threatening qualities is one of the stupidest things ever. Everything can be dangerous. Hell, even plain distilled water is as dangerous as alcohol if you can't understand when to stop drinking it. The point is to educate everyone about those dangers, instead of spreading misinformation, and keep the general level of contentment high enough for people not to get suicidal or violent thoughts on a regular basis.

The Swedish laws allow you to have sex with animals. I read it like 5 years ago, and I can't get it out of my head. It's so disgusting.

No...but it IS rated M for mature = 17+. Basically the same as an R rated movie. I don't see theatres getting grief for letting children into an NC-17 movie, generally because they just dont get released in theatres cause they won't make money. Same reason I haven't seen any video games with equivalent ratings, because it would be to hard to sell to kids. Even leisure suit larry (a game where the ultimate goal is getting laid), is only rated M. It's not till you get to the one specifically labeled as uncut and uncensored that you get AO. And all that game has is some boobs. By movie standards, it should barely receive an M for that. Last I checked, PG-13 movies have guys trying to get into girls panties, and R movies had cursing and the less than frequent breast. But this is getting off-track. The most likely reason this is in the works is because people still think that video games are what makes kids go into school shooting. But even the Virginia Tech massacre guy didn't play video games. His roommate said that he had never seen him play video games or watch T.V. except on wednesdays he'd watch wrestling. Leave the video games out of this. If you want there to be no violence in schools...it's not gonna happen. Violence, deceit, dishonesty, murder, raping, and just about everything else has been around long before technology. EDIT: Also, if this law gets passed...I can't wait to see on the news how some 14 yr old kid bought a fake ID so he could buy a video game. That would just tickle my funny bone =)

Games getting a higher rating makes teenagers more interested in buying it. If that's intentional or not, I don't know.

This is what supposedly happens to every new medium. Books were supposed to teach people to kill, then TV was spoiling our youth, now computer games are the tool of the devil. Don't worry, things will be OK in a generation or two. In the meantime, it's perfectly idiotic to put someone in jail for selling a videogame, no matter what the circumstances are.

Well, just because it's allowed, doesn't mean you should do it, or even think about it. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's perfectly legal to drink someone else's vomit. As long as we're talking about stupid laws. In my country, porn is still technically illegal, although no one cares. Also, it is actually illegal to blaspheme here, though most intelligent people don't give a crap about that.

And the law says..
15 (B) "DEPRAVED VIOLENCE" MEANS ANY PHOTOGRAPHIC, PHOTO-REALISTIC OR
16 SIMILAR VISUAL REPRESENTATION OR IMAGE DEPICTING THE RAPE, DISMEMBER-
17 MENT, PHYSICAL TORTURE, MUTILATION OR EVISCERATION OF A HUMAN BEING.
18 (C) "INDECENT IMAGE" MEANS ANY PHOTOGRAPHIC, PHOTO-REALISTIC OR SIMI-
19 LAR VISUAL REPRESENTATION OR IMAGE OF A PERSON OR PORTION OF THE HUMAN
20 BODY WHICH DEPICTS NUDITY, SEXUAL CONDUCT OR SADO-MASOCHISTIC ABUSE AND
21 WHICH IS HARMFUL TO MINORS.
I don't know any games like that. Much less Resident Evil.

In York, you may shoot any Scotsman out and about after sunset with a crossbow (Watch out RRidgway!) In New Hampshire, you may drop dead cats on ducks as long as you have a license. In Kansas, a schoolboy who requests a day off to go to the fair must be given the day off, and all A's for the day.

Gah, stop regurgitating stuff from old webpages. Rather talk about interesting stupid laws that might possibly have some relevance to anything at all.
