There is a bug in the Windows Vista API which causes AVI files to be written with bad headers. The following procedure fixes it for the majority of users.

Hi there! If you are indeed a Vista user, the following steps should (with any luck) fix your AVIs. Step 1: Get the experimental VirtualDub (1.7.2 as of writing) here. Step 2: Open your avi up in it Step 3: "Audio --> Direct Stream Copy" and "Video --> Direct Stream Copy" MUST be set. Step 4: "File --> Save as AVI..." and save it elsewhere. If that does not work, try making a 20 sec uncompressed AVI in the emulator and doing the above steps. If that works, at least you know you can save uncompressed.. (ffdshow's H264 Lossless can be fixed by VirtualDub) Please post your results here so we know if something worked or didn't :)

Should be fixed by SP1, whenever that is. Note that this problem is recognised after AVI dumping by the following conditions: 1. Corrupted-looking video stream (on uncompressed, the video appears 'wrapped' slightly). Example: 2. Bad sound. 3. Mysteriously works in ffdshow and Media Player Classic. Also works in VirtualDub 1.7.2. If there are other problems you are experiencing, you might be having an entirely different issue. The problem is now resolved as of today with a patch from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979/en-us I am pleasantly suprised it has been released before SP1, but disappointed it has taken this long.

Hooray for beta software being fixed. Next step RC1.

Adding another problem and solution here, This one slightly more specific to Mupen64 (may happen with other emulators). Attempting to record with a DirectX plugin and the Aero theme running will likely cause a blank AVI with no video but audio in the background. The solution to this is as follows:
  1. Right click the mupen exe or shortcut.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  4. Check the box for "Disable desktop composition". This will disable Aero whenever the program runs.
  5. Click OK and go about your business.
The screen will go blank for a second or 2 every time you open and close mupen, but AVI recording should now work properly.

To me, when you sticky a topic, the topic must have very important info. Somehow I do not feel stickying this topic is that important or that its useful for most of our users. Dont get me wrong, the info in this topic is important but I am just questioning how important it is to sticky it.

Well, I can put it this way if you would like; This topic will be redundant when SP1 is out, and all new issues of vista have the hotfix bundled in. Feel free to unsticky it, if someone has a problem they'll have to use the search function :)

No. I specifically requested Bisqwit to sticky it after, in the gens forum, recieving 3 complaints about AVI creation (all by Vista users) -- each with its own new thread within the space of a couple of weeks.

Yeah, during the writing of that post I forgot about the mupen+Aero bug. I think this is a problem with mupen, not Vista, but I guess I don't know enough about the problem to know for sure.

Ok, so i managed to get about 3 good captures in mupen, and now it does that other thing, with the video "overlapping". I have SP1, and when i tried to download that update it said i didnt need it, help anyone?

video overlapping? Vista SP1 should fix the problem.. does running the hotfix say it's not required?

Hmm... Try opening and resaving the AVI in VirtualDub (using direct stream copy on both audio and video) and see if that fixes it.

The direct stream copy thing didnt do anything, but, i tried it, restarted, tried it again, still didnt work, but when i changed the video plugn, it magically did. Btw I am using gnl64v.0.4.1, so i think it was the plugin (jabo 1.6) that was the problem...... lets see if it continues to work

Apologies. Next time I should comment AFTER I see the problem and not assume :) Thats a bug I haven't seen before on my end. Looks like it might be related to the position of Mupen, but I can't say for sure. Maybe graphics drivers need updating or something? As for using glN64, this works well because Aero is rendered using Direct3D, so if you use an OpenGL plugin the two shouldn't conflict. Then again, using a Direct3D plugin shouldn't conflict either but it seems to anyway. Personally for anyone stumbling in on this topic I'd recommend trying an OpenGL plugin and see if it solves your problems before posting here.
