Some notes... - You can upload more than 100 MB to Youtube - simply switch to a Director account. You'll have to download a small program too. The 10min rule remains. - Here's something about ZSNES encoding. - Recently I've got great file sizes with the "VP70" codec. (Was included with the k-lite codec pack; dunno about other packs.) - I've also found out about VANDAL's method some time ago; it's indeed perfect for preserving e.g. the "shoulder-pumping" effect in Super Metroid. :) One thing to note is that on a dark background, the graphics will appear darker too. You can see that in the T2 video (see linked thread). - Don't bother converting the video size if the emulated system outputs to TVs and the video size is smaller than 320x240. The default Youtube video window automatically resizes the video to a 4:3 resolution. - I use VirtualDubMod, and mencoder only to get videos that can't be obtained with V.D.M. or AviSynth. mencoder's documentation was a bit too difficult to read for my liking. :/

One thing I like about mencoder is that it supports as input basically anything mplayer does. This not only means that it's a handy "ripping" software (you can "save" anything mplayer can play into an avi, eg. a DVD or an online video stream) but you can also convert video from any source without the need for intermediate formats in your HD (which is handy eg. if you want to convert a video from a DVD). OTOH, it's such a "linux hacker" tool that it indeed is not the easiest to use nor has the best of documentations.

There's also the "trick" where you use a malformed FLV which claims to be longer than it is, then you use a higher bitrate than Youtube allows. Youtube divides the total file size by the reported size to determine bitrate, and if it's below a specific threshold (I forget the exact value, something like 350kbps?), it will accept a pre-encoded high-bitrate video. FLV must be MPEG 4, not VP6.

Is there a way to do the 60fps to 30fps weave trick using mencoder? The AVIsynth script works pretty well, but I'd prefer using a 1-step encoding method (using only mencoder, which I use to encode my movies) instead of the 2-step method (mencoder first, then AVIsynth trick). I tried finding it in mencoder's documentation, but I'm afraid my knowledge about these kinds of things is too limited to understand anything written in there ...

The only method I can think of is using MeGUI which solely uses avisynth script. It comes with an assortment of audio/video encoding-based programs which of those you should be able to add your mencoder parameters to (since it uses mencoder). I believe when you're setting up your codecs, at the bottom it tells of the command line that'll be used and that's where you'd make your modifications. Give it a shot.

Malformed eh? I might just investigate this and if things work out, I'll write another tutorial; That is, if the information isn't already available (I'll check around for such information).

I hate that rule, and I think the limit is 1gb when using the downloader...wait 30 min don't you mean 10? EDIT: Yes, 1gb 10 min limit

Well, I have found a tutorial for encoding high quality video files but, as you'll read, it is obsolete; it does not work anymore :( . There are some examples within the tutorial which show off some eye pleasing, quality-wise videos. I'm posting this because I thought you'd like to see them. Although the hack no longer works, the tutorial writer claims that it's still possible to encode your own FLV video files to avoid YouTube reencoding them. I have yet to get this to work. Maybe YouTube has also caught on to this as well?

I found out this neat trick just a moment ago from another tech forum. If you add "&fmt=18" to the end of youtube video, you apparently can view a higher quality version of it. Actually, I thought that when the 10 minutes rule was introduced, it applied to everyone, but you could sign up for a special account that was an exception to the rule. But then they stopped offering sign-ups after a while. Anyway, I read somewhere that it's possible to get stereo sound into a Youtube video by encoding it directly into FLV format first with just the right settings so that Youtube doesn't have to modify it. Has anybody here thought to take advantage of that sort of thing? Oh wait, now that I look again, I guess that's what we were discussing... But still! Stereo sound! Wowee!
