Post subject: Amazing Free RPG, made with RPGMaker: Last Scenario

I just finished [playing] it, and it was amazing. It is really a throw back to the good Final Fantasies of the SNES days. The plot is better than the past 3 FFs, with real twists and turns. The bosses actually prove to be a mental challenge. Lots of side quests near then end, as well. It is the FF I've been clamoring for since FFIX and beyond sucked. Unfortunately, it took me forever to find a working download location, and its from a sketchy Brazilian site, but it worked for me. http://baixaki.ig.com.br/download/Last-Scenario.htm

Yeah, I've played it a bit. Haven't really gotten ahead anywhere since reaching that castle on the first mission (the first time I die always makes me stop playing an RPG for a while).

I've been playing this some today, and I have some questions: 1. Is there anyway to sort the itemlist? Right now, my itemlist looks like chaos, so it would be nice with such a feature. 2. What does crisis do? My crisis bar is at its max right now, but I don't know what to do with it... 3. I would personally find it nice to see how much money you have in total when you have won a battle, not just how much money you got from the fight. Overall, the game is looking very promising. I'll keep on playing this some more, hopefully I'll reach a weapon shop sooner or later... ;)

If I recall, you need magic cards or something, some of them have abilities that require the crisis bar. Like that wind card or thingy that you start with can heal you in battle when the crisis gauge is full or somesuch.

1. The item list is usually auto-sorted - first useable healing items, next in battle items, then weapons, armor, rings, spell cards. Probably, you just don't have enough items yet for it to seem sorted. 2. Crisis requires spell cards. All spell cards have a regular ability and a crisis ability, the later being super powerful in some way. Healing spells all have a 'heal the entire party' crisis effect. It doesn't help until you get a full party, however, which is a few missions out. 3. I'm wondering if you think I wrote the game.... I didn't. I just played it, and absolutely loved it. I figured the FF nuts on the board would love it. It is actually kinda old, I think.

Here's a little plug. I've been member at a site called Gaming World for a long time (I'm Dada there). It's probably the biggest site concerning free RPGs like that one. The main site is currently down, so you'll have to dig around on the forum to find more games to play (this is a good starting point).

Could you give me a brief explanation of what's new in this version compared to the XP version? It looks pretty much the same, but I haven't had time to play around much with it yet.

A couple things in response: I will remind you that this game is to be a throwback to old-school, apparently. Thus, you can probably bet the battle system will be basic. As for VX...just because it was released doesn't make the XP version stop working, though it could make interest wane, it's no different than when a new system comes out. I still play my Super NES and Game Boy every so often (even preferring them to newer game systems half the time!), and I'm sure many others do as well. It's worth noting that I'm not criticizing or anything, you have some points there, but this is just how I look at it ;). Anyway, back on topic overall, I recently downloaded the game, and might try it out at some point. Though I have another game I want to play first, so it might be a while before I can give a thorough review.

When I run it, it says it requires MS Gothic font to display text properly. It seems to work fine without it, but I'd like to get this font anyways, but google was not much help. Can someone locate the file msgothic.ttc on their computer and send it to me or is there an easier way?

I googled "download MS Gothic", and this was the first result in the list: http://www.kanjistep.com/en/misc/howto.html There's a handy download link for the MS Gothic font on that page... Cheers!

You can install those additional fonts from your Windows CD, in Control Panel -> Regional Settings (or windows key+R, intl.cpl)

Thanks pirate_sephiroth, but I went with Hal's method already. I've almost completed this game I think, but I got a cool idea for a challenge so I started it already before actually finishing. The challenge is to see how far you can get without ever gaining exp from random battles that you can run away from. Since the bosses give you so much exp, it might be possible to get very far. It is basically a standard low level game except your levels really won't be all that low (although as low as possible). It would seem easy compared to games like final fantasy 6 low level game where bosses tend not to give any exp (so you can stay as low as lvl 6), but in that game there are lots of ways to avoid enemy damage, whereas in this game there don't seem to be many besides physical/magical shield which is only 1/2. Anyways I so far I am only up through Farin Base, which means I have only killed 2 things so far, my levels are 8,10,12. Wondering if anyone else would like to attempt this too or if anyone is interested in hearing how it goes.

I'm really curious if you will be able to do this. The boss battles were ridiculously hard...

Well I stopped trying, because after the first fight it seemed no harder than the normal play though. It is probably possible to get near the end of the game. I don't know about some of theses bosses near the end though, I can barely defeat them with normal characters.

This is the most pleasurable jRPG experience I've ever had, seriously. FF 4-6 weren't as captivating for me, and I spent much less time on Chrono Trigger as well, but this game has the same overall appeal while having a deeper plot, longer and rewarding gameplay, and a lot of additional challenge for those who didn't get enough with the main storyline. So far I have completed all the quests and am trying to free Alexander from the Gate of Elysium (the bastard is unspeakably tough, even though I can deal as much as 20-25k damage each turn). I guess I'll be doing a newgame+ playthrough afterwards, or try getting the 7 remaining Hex tiles (I have 92 + 1 from Alexander) for the "extra challenge". For the record, I beat the normal final boss at level 70, and now I'm capped at 99 (which required surprisingly little grinding — overall about 4-5 hours of the ~63.5 I spent on the game). [EDIT] Damn it, made a dozen more attempts to defeat Alexander, but his Lionheart attack is so bullshit strong it effectively means insta-kill for two random characters. There's no way I can survive it, and thus there is no way I can sacrifice other characters's safety to make one of them the universal self-healing target, like I did with a couple bosses previously (Party Hat is awesome like that). Does anyone have any ideas what to do? So far I was able to lower Alexander's HP to about 90k out of 200k, but that's the limit of what I've achieved so far.

Just started playing it, and I love it! Somehow at first, I hated the RPG Maker style, but after a while I didn't mind it anymore. This hex game is cool, too! I've begun working on an A.I. player for that Hex game, so I can use it and see if I can humiliate people with an all-bat hand. I'll make it available here when it's done (probably in a week or so).

Well, you can evidently humiliate them by hand, too. This was my final match with Saraswati before she returned to Randipur: And she's kinda supposed to be one of the better players out there. :P For the record, my hand was Randolph, Pollux, Hilbert, 5x Riftgate. Unfortunately you won't be able to humuliate every player with just bats because the bats are simply not strong enough for the later tiles, and you will lose them pretty much every turn. You could try Undines, though, they are far more versatile but too weak to use for a human player. Oh, and make sure to track Saraswati as she travels around the map, that's an awesome sidequest. She gradually goes apeshit. :D
