I have to run gens-rerecording in wine. It takes all available CPU time and runs not so smooth as the native version. Same wish, it would be great to be able to run gens-rerecording natively under Linux (and other UNIX systems too!)
Part of the issue is a rather recent bug on Wine, which was recently fixed; the newest versions of Wine should have Gens running much closer to native version. But due to another bug still in the process of being fixed, you may have to turn off audio or Gens might crash (depends on your sound card).

Never got this issue. I got another one — it is impossible to dump video (gens produces avi files with no frames), but this does not make a huge problem — my friend helps me when I need a video.

I've got the exact same problem, and I even posted that on WineHQ for each Gens version I tried.

Posting a bug report there would also be useful :-p

Why doesn’t gens running in wine allow to input A+start in frame advance mode?

Are you sure it isn't because of your keyboard layout? I can't recall that I ever had a problem with with that key combination. Try to put A on a different key or something and try again. Some keys are not able to be pressed together some times. Reconfigure and try again.

WST, haven't tested in Wine, but I get this problem all the time for different key combinations, and I know that many others do too. Try reassigning your keys. In particular, try assigning the frame advance button to the shift key, most keyboards allow the shift key together with any key.

I’ve found out that unchecking „add sound to avi” solves the problem with the video dump for some reason. So, if you feel comfortable with no sound, you can make avis this way…

Thats interesting. I will have to try that some day. Would need to dump the picture and sound separatly and then just bake them together then.

Yes, it works fine for me 1. Dump video into an *.avi file 2. Dump audio into a *.wav file 3. Encode the video and audio separately 4. Merge the encoded files into a single container with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i audio.mp3 -i video.mp4 -acodec copy -vcodec copy output.avi
Made my last video exactly this way. Someone may wonder why I didn’t use ffmpeg for the encoding by itself. The answer is simple — it failed to read the dumped avi for some reason.
