Extra Mario Bros brings Metroid-style exploration and item collection to a Mario game. The patch for it can be downloaded from http://www.derok.net/emulation0/supermariobros.html (Patch to Super Mario Bros (JU) (PRG0) [!].nes) I personally don't have the necessary TAS skills to do this, but I figured you guys would be interested. It's a lot of fun.

Hacks of mario games are rarely TASed. The only exceptions that I know of are Air (smb1 hack), Super Mario Adventure (smb3) and Super Demo World (SMW).

Hey, this is pretty cool... if you can post a walkthrough I'll do a rough tas of it ;) Would be neat to see how much could be glitched through

The exception is that this one is likely considered the best SMB1 TAS of all time. Trust me when I say that it'd be worth seeing a TAS of it. There's so much different it's insane.

It's got me good and stuck, but sistermind TASed it almost a year ago and Youtubed it. Here's the links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbPbvl6g4rc - Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSAQ23EtCqE - Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN1Xy3bpI2Q - Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CacEXwOPpvI - Part 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz6vYcNmJTs - Part 5 (Secret World)

Oh wow, that's impressive indeed. Excellent usage of colors, I like the blue and black turtles :D The mario meets metroid mashup was very nice as well. The youtube run looked rather clean to me though. Is it really worth it to create another one?

That depends, I guess. It seems to me that the player is supposed to collect 1UPs, which is done with this YT version. Strangely, though, it says 0% for me at the end (watched the .fcm, not the YT after the first part). So it could be "improved" by not collecting any 1UP since they only seem to matter for the ending, I guess.

I guess time could be saved by not getting the 1ups. But would the movie really be more entertaining...?

The "Play It Now" link uses an emulater that FAILS to emulate the game properly, the graphics are all crappy. xD

Holy crap! I am usually anti-hack.. barring the 2 major ones, SDW and Mario Adventure, but aside from the insane repeating which was required... this was a really incredible hack! I'd definitely like to see a more polished version. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Well, I don't know of anybody working on TASing this hack, so here's a WIP that saves a frame rule on the "first" two areas. Feedback appreciated. Link to video

The WIP is pretty good. Perhaps a few frame rules can be saved that way, for I didn't use memory watching back when I made that TAS. I was trying to find a major improvement to improve my run, such as a new route, but I tried almost every route I can think of but failed to find a faster one. If you're able to find a faster route then I'd really be shocked. Good luck. :)
Recent projects: SMB warpless TAS (2018), SMB warpless walkathon (2019), SMB something never done before (2019), Extra Mario Bros. (best ending) (2020).

I've been away for most of the last week but I realised that I'm 1 frame away from saving a frame rule in area 1. Tested everything multiple times and am unable to gain that frame :C. If anyone else wants to have a go, my movie is here, but this will probably be a SMB 1-1 scenario.

You should really try to obsolete that movie. Do you think that movie is your least optimized TAS (not that it is bad, all of your TASes are very well optimized!)? Since your homepage is outdated I am unsure what TASes you are working on obsoleting.
Projects: Interested in TASing N64 Mario Golf. GBA Mario Tennis: Power Tour is on hold.

Bad ending:
  • No true final boss
  • Gets ???'s above Mario's head and asked where the princess is
  • No completion time nor completion percentage
  • After returning to title screen, hitting continue you seem to have all your previous items and progress.
Good Ending:
  • True final boss
  • Rescues princess and gets a "Thanks for playing"
  • Completion time and completion percentage are displayed
  • After returning to title screen, hitting continue you seem to lose all your items but have invincibility.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjq3-KunWcE Now I understand the nature of that Area-Sp. Since the player loses all power-ups after the good ending but gets invulnerability, they can choose to get all of them along with the 8 keys in Area-Sp, which you can't enter without invulnerability. Since the currently published good ending run only gets 2 of the 5 power-ups, I have been wondering: would it be faster to get the best ending ASAP and then head to Area-Sp to get all power-ups and keys and then beat the game again than to get all power-ups before beating the game for the first time in an "all power-ups" / "100%" run?

"100%" would also get all 20 1-Ups. Sistermind's TAS from 2010 or so, which gocha linked above back around when I made this thread, does that in only about 32 minutes, and then takes about another 16 to do Area-Sp and beat Bowser a second time.

Link to video Since those videos are no longer available, I made an encode of the entire movie with the input file.
