Post subject: Debug Modes, Unused Stuff, Etc.

OK, so I'm a total junkie for unused things in games, debug modes, etc. Stuff that can be directly accessed if I want to look at it. I notice that a lot of info on various games and stuff is really all jumbled around the 'net, some info lingering in forums, a few things put up in sites, sites that used to be around but just linger in stasis (I'm looking at BMF's 'The Cutting Room Floor' as an example), and so-on. Are there any current sites that are actively putting up information about this stuff? If there aren't, I was thinking about doing something like that in a Wiki format, because I think there's a lot of other people who'd be interested, not just myself.

I know http://sonicretro.org/ has a lot of info. about the Sonic games, and http://smwcentral.net/ is a comprehensive resource to Super Mario World, but I don't know about a "GameFAQs for videogame detritus"...

Thanks, upthorn! I've actually decided to just go ahead and request a wikia wiki for this kind of information. Links like that'll be useful. At the same time, I'll finally get to figure out how to mess with a wiki to make it all nice and stuff. This should be pretty cool. I hope there's interest!

Super Smash Bros. Melee got a debug-menu that's quite known throughout the community. More information here: http://ssbm.detstar.com/debug/ It sounds like a potentially interesting site, although I don't think I would have anything to contribute.

FF7 has a hilariously weird debug mode with notes from programmers etc. and plenty of menu options that just crash the game. Look around, it's pretty sweet.

Aye, I've known about The Cutting Room Floor for a while. It's a shame he doesn't update, and it's actually one of my big reasons for wanting to do my own wiki thing. I e-mailed him asking if I could use his content in the wiki. In the meantime... BMF54123 is actually my roommate. By the way, something else he found a while ago: try viewing the last area of RAM in Super Buster Bros. (SNES) ;) (Namely around ~7FFE00, if my memory serves)

No kidding! That's really awesome! I'll keep that in mind, though, I'm assuming that this has to do with a hex viewing program or something? I haven't been able to find one on the 'net that acts kinda like the one for the N64 Gameshark, so I haven't gotten one. By the way, I do hate to impose, but you mind asking him (if he hasn't seen the e-mail I sent him) if he minds about the content use on the wiki? I just don't want to up and steal stuff from him. I think it'd be rude. =/ I also found a few things poking around Acmlm's board thing that I gotta ask people about too.

I was able to get in touch with GoldS on the Sonic Retro forums, and he let me use the stuff he found while hacking Mega Man X. It's extremely interesting stuff. I got a PM last night and he sent me some stuff about some unused text, and I thought that was really cool of him to do. ^o^ Also, thanks, Truncated, for the Streets of Rage 3 and Kid Chameleon stuff. I'm gonna see if I can get in touch with them for permission as well. I also found a few things for Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, but I can't seem to find a way of contacting the person who found it. Same with the discovery of an unused enemy in Zelda: A Link to the Past. I'm also gonna get in touch with David Wonn next time I see him around AIM and see if he'll give me the OK to use the Debug Mode stuff on the wiki, though I'm sure he'll say "Yes", since we've known each other on the 'net for a long time. :D

Oh man, if someone posts that shit up, it's immediately going down. I would, however, like to see if I could find someone to maybe hack MK2 or something so that playing as the hidden characters and bosses actually is a possibility. I've seen it done on the Genesis. For now, I'm kinda interested in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. If you look at the game in a hex editor thing like the Gameshark's memory editor, it shows that there's text for a few options, such as rounds that end in one hit, that weren't actually included in the final version. I'm very curious to know if any other stuff exists.

Excuse the double post and bump, but I did have a couple of questions, since I've been getting back into doing work for the Wiki again now that Spring Break has come about. Does anyone know of some sites where I might be able to pull off a link exchange with that are similar to this? I sent an e-mail to the guys at Unseen64, but I'm not really sure where else to go looking. Secondly, I believe somewhere on the FAQ, there's mention of, in the Metroid passwords thing, the NARPAS SWORD password being a debug mode code. Could I get permission to toss that on the wiki as well? If so, who should I credit it to?

Oh I love this idea. Totally awesome. :) I remember when I played Ultima 8 when I was a kid. There was a way to enter a debug state in that game as well. Better late than never on this, I suppose. Heh! I did actually put up a PC section. I never thought to include it until you said it, so maybe I can find a way now to poke through the Duke Nukem 3D art files. Thanks, Highness! Also, I got permission to post this awesome little gem up on the site. Also, I got the OK from gocha to make mention of an unused tune in Ninja Five-O.

I don't know how BUILD works (because I don't know how to work with it), but I guess it could. I'm kind of hoping there's something Tile Layer Pro-ish out there. I have a site I can check, so searching shouldn't really be a problem.

The help provided with it is quite good, actually (Buildhlp.exe, wasn't it?), and there's a couple of maps that show you how the important things (doors) are supposed to work. - and you select objects/walltextures/etc. from the entire set of sprites/textures. The default texture is a butt-ugly brick wall which shouldn't be anywhere in-game. There's an unused door-type or two, if I remember right. I don't think there were any actual unused enemies or items. Dang, so long ago...but yeah, it's pretty simple to access the texture listings (displayed as a thumbgrid many, many pages long- you get ALL the animation frames, in all angles) from the editor.

I know that there's a number of unused sprites in the game too, such as a robotic version of the Pig Cop, some map screen enemies, and some other miscellany knick-knacks hanging around the game. Would I be able to see those too?

I'm fairly positive NARPASSWORD was done by Ice Man in his disassembly of Metroid.

I thought it was by Parasyte, he was good at finding "button sequel" code and password stuff. I can't remember but I do recall that he posted on gscentral website that one of "code" was stolen from him (he wasn't credited). I can't find out in search engine if Parasyte did discover NARPAS SWORD code or someone else did. Might be him?
