Yeah, I think mz has an emulator workaround for disc changing in 0.0.7, which is what I'm using.
Anyway, here's the updated Ocelot fight with a new C4 room route and no SOCOM ammo left *huzzah!*
Also mz, I've been getting requests from some people on IRC to see encodes of my runs, so...if you can, could you encode this update? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks :)

I've progressed a lot further, up to the Raven Tank fight. This is, without a doubt, the single most frustrating boss fight I have ever attempted. The PXM I've linked to contains one of my horrid attempts aborted before I could endure any further embarrassment. I might change my route and pick up a claymore, but for now this fight is my personal torture chamber.
Let me say it again...
KOJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The rest of it went very well, especially the laser room ;)
EDIT: I've beaten the tank (finally) and I'm now on my way down to B2 to fight Gray Fox. Here's my progress. Also mz, if you could encode what's new (from and including the Ocelot fight onwards) I'd appreciate that, thanks :)

Gah *facepalm* I made a really stupid tactical error that wastes so much time in the no-weapons room right after the tank fight. I have since fixed it and moved on. I will post again once I reach Psycho Mantis. It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say about my run, maybe I'll include that cutscene separately as an extra ;).

As promised, here's my new WIP up to the Psycho Mantis fight! I'm going to switch controllers when Mantis says "BLACKOUT!" because apparently that's the best time to do it.
Also mz - when you encode this, could you include the hilariously inaccurate cutscene of Mantis analyzing my performance? That would make for an awesome easter egg :D

Now it's Psycho Mantis' turn to have his way with me. Whenever I try to unplug the first controller and plug in the second (reassigning the keys obviously) PCSX resets the PlayStation. This also happens even if I insert Controller 2 in the middle of a movie and just leave Controller 1 alone.
mz, any suggestions from a PCSX perspective?
If PCSX really doesn't support mid-movie controller swapping, this leaves me with two options, both of which will look retarded in the movie:
1) Use the very slow method of beating Psycho Mantis with Controller 1 (I know it's possible and that it's slow, but I don't know how)
2) Call Mei Ling, save, switch controllers/soft reset, reload my save file and continue from there, which is completely pointless and will take a lot of time.

I think MGS needed a bunch of SPU hacks to sound good, but it seems they can't be enabled in "Movie Sync" mode. :P
I don't think any emulator records controller swapping, that would be completely useless, except for this game. :P
I think PCSX always records both players, you can't unplug one. I'd recommend just playing with controller 2 during this part, without (un)plugging anything.
So, just make sure you have Pad 2 enabled in your PAD Plugin configuration before you start recording, and use those keys; I don't think Psycho Mantis will care if controller 1 is plugged in, as long as you don't use it.
Hi kids. Well, as promised, I've defeated Psycho Mantis. Actually, I've gone way further than that.
So here's my PXM, 127,243 frames on the first frame of fadein when submitting to torture (I'm obviously going for the bad ending just for time reasons).
So, I've made a decision about this run: this will be a test run. I will not be submitting this run to TASvideos; rather, I will use this run to help plan a much more optimized route (and sections like the cave will be much better optimized). If I play through the game as tightly optimized as I can, I will be able to create a route for a hard or extreme run (depending on the predefined save rules).
So I hope you guys don't take this in a negative way. I'd still love support and suggestions for creating the ultimate MGS1 route. For now, this is what I want to do, and so far I love doing this testrun.

Why can't we take a few frames to get all three cardboard boxes and use them for warps?!
Box A for the nuclear disposal facility, box B for warhead storage, and C for the snow field by the entrance to the underground base?
If we do this, how many more frames can we pull?
Pardon my asking, but I can't find an answer... what kind of codecs do I need to view the .avi encodes? Opening the file right now just gets me a 10 minutes of mute black nothingness. :(

I just realized something. When entering the building, would it be faster to crawl through the lower air duct instead of the second floor air duct? It would put you on the bottom floor, save a chaff grenade, and I'm sure that you don't have to skip a cutscene since it doesn't play if you took the bottom air duct inside.

By the way, isn't it faster to hold down the button when inputting a new codec address instead of rapid-firing? (Maximum speed when rapid-firing is 30 per second, whereas after 20 frames or so when holding it down, the speed becomes 60 per second.)
It doesn't work like that, since all but one of the codec conversations are burst transmissions.
Also you probably watched the AVI and didn't see the input - I alternate between X and O, since both skip a line of codec. So in essence I am rapidfiring at 60 fps (or rather, 30 fps from 15 if I was RFing X).
EDIT: Here you go kids! I'm making a ton of progress; some sections aren't optimal, but it shares the same route as the optimal version. Remember that I'm simply planning a route here; I'm not going to waste an hour saving 10 frames on a testrun.
Either way, I hope you enjoy it!
EDIT2: this pxm has a desync as I start the Communications Tower. Sorry about that, but there's no way I can fix it. I'll just have to start that part over again.
EDIT3: Here's my new synced version which finishes just after the communications tower. I'll do the building rappel etc. tomorrow.
EDITSIXBILLION: Rappel and three-goon encounter complete. I end it just after picking up the stingers. I need to study for my upcoming exams so the Hind D fight won't be for a while. Sorry :(
