I'm pretty sure he was referring to dialing Meryl's address and not speeding through the conversations.
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

Disc 1 is complete and synchronizes beautifully! I'm particularly proud of how the Sniper Wolf 2 fight came out. See for yourself :D. Now on to download Disc 2 and continue the run (the serial is SLUS-00776, any version of it will work)

It looks good and cool, but I still have to give this two massive thumbs down. Snake looks so cool when he smokes. :(

Okay, either something's not right with the disc switching or I'm a horrible ass who doesn't know how to use PCSX. Probably both. Here's a new version of the pxm - http://files.filefront.com/metalgearsolidalt+tas+thenpxm/;13247558;/fileinfo.html - where I prompt the player to insert disc 2, but the game doesn't recognize that the discs are switched. Weird. mz - I'd appreciate some help on this.

Heh, your movie worked for me. :P I think it might depend on the CDR-plugin/CD-drive you're using... Or even something else. Like when you use "Start Playback": sometimes it shows the current CD-ROM ID, and sometimes it doesn't. There are some plugins that do this bug for me (the ISO plugin, I think). So... What's probably happening for you is that the CDR plugin is not updating the CD ID, so the game can't know when you insert CD2, since it still thinks CD1 is in. Maybe you can force an update of CD ID by pressing "Esc" key and then "Emulator"->"Run" once you've inserted CD2 in your drive. You will have to do some trial and error until I can fix this, sorry. (Other things to force a CD ID update you can try are: pressing the "Reset" hotkey, using the "Run CD" menu entry, etc... After this, and once the correct CD ID is in memory, just reload your savestate and keep recording. I hope you can get the point: the important thing is just to force an update of the current CD ID, you can then keep doing everything else normally.)
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

If you're using Daemon Tools you may have to 'Eject tray', then 'Unmount image' before mounting the second disc.. It used to get stuck for me during game installations, though that might have been fixed.

Guys, what's the problem with running the ISO on the emulator instead of mounting it using DEMON Tools?! =/

I'm not saying he is, but he would be if he has the game in another format such as CloneCD, BlindWrite or raw (bin + cue).

I've been using Daemon Lite for this run. I don't actually think PCSX supports unmounted ISO's (just something called PSX-EXEs). I'll try some of those other hosting tools you mentioned when I'm not studying for exams >:(

You mean CloneCD and BlindWrite? Those are for reading in (and burning) CDs/DVDs, I just mentioned them because they have their own file format. (img + ccd [+ sub (optional)] for CloneCD/CloneDVD, b6i + b6t for BlindWrite) The only other CD/DVD image mounting tool I can think of is Alcohol 52% (or Alcohol 120%), but that isn't free. Did you see the steps I posted for Daemon Tools? (eject, unmount, mount instead of mounting the second CD directly)

Yes I did. Same result.

Wow, quick response. Alright, here's a good list I guess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_image_software Although I wouldn't bother to try more than one or two alternatives.

Okay, I see the point. ePSXe can run unmounted images, but doesn't have TAS features. Thanx! :)

It seems that mounted images just won't cooperate with the PXM when it comes to disk changing. I downloaded two brand new ISOs of the discs for MGS1, switched, and...nothing happened. AGAIN. Halifax doesn't have many game stores and none of them sell old PS1 games. I've already tried (and failed) to obtain a copy before realizing that the Essential Collection version was modified for the PS2. Online shopping is not an option for me. In other words, I'm stuck, folks. I really don't know what to do.

Burn the iso if all else fail, but you can probably do it without that if mz did it... i dont see the point of buying the game

Yeah, buying the game or downloading more copies won't change anything. Just make sure one of your ISOs work in pSX or ePSXe, and then just do some trial and error in PCSX with it. I did some more tests, it looks like the CD-ROM ID gets updated randomly or something... I've looked into PCSX's and CDR plugins' source code, but I couldn't find a way to fix this. So, you will need to find a way to make it work as I said, or keep working on the movie from a savestate I could give you, or just drop the TAS until a better coder or emulator shows up...

I'm not sure if I'm understanding things right, but PCSX is capable of running ISOs right off the hard drive without having to mount it to a virtual drive. You'll just need the Linuzappz ISO CDR Driver 1.4 plugin. And yes, I have recorded a movie from a disc and played it back from the ISO, so it should hope. Hope this is useful. :<

Well, I've thought about what you guys have been saying on the thread, and I've decided to put run progress on hold, and instead rethink my Disc 1 strategy (hopefully with an Extreme savefile if I can get a usable one from GameFAQs). I might also help antd with his VR Missions run. Just because the run proper is stalled doesn't mean I won't continue working on route planning and tricks! Look for a huge update of the first post in the next couple of hours, with all my Metal Gear Solid TASing knowledge for public discussion/debate. Unrelated addendum: Ferret! Nice to hear from you, man. You should come on IRC occasionally :P

I've been doing some fooling around with save files and I finally came across one that worked with PCSX AND had a cleargame already stored! So now I can start work on a Disc 1 extreme run. Here's a PXM of the first room - I focused much more on exploiting stupid enemy AI for your enjoyment so you don't fast forward through this part :P. I'm not going to be working on this as frequently as my Hard testrun due to real-life commitments, but I hope to greatly increase the optimization so that it's absolutely perfect this time! Oh, and you'll need to set the memory card in Slot A to a special *.mc I made for this movie to play in order to play the PXM in sync. Here it is. I want to make this first room as entertaining as possible. Please give feedback on how to make this even more hilarious :D

Does the throw cancel work if you do not have any weapons? I couldn't get the throw cancel to work in VR missions.

Unfortunately the throw cancel doesn't work if you don't have weapons on you. That's why I don't throw cancel in the first room. The whole point is that the game always does a check to see if you have a weapon on you, and if you do, the game automatically calls the "weapon drawn" function disrupting anything else you might be doing.
