Post subject: Using level editors in runs (especially warpless)?

I came up with this question when I was TASing some old non-sidescroll games. Some of them allow you to edit a certain level (usually the first one) and play through it, then proceed onto the following original ones. Therefore, you can create new shortcuts in that level at will. However, it can be argued that a level editor is something like a password to skip to a special level, or even an unlocked debug mode. Generally, we don't use passwords or debug modes. So I'd like to ask: Is it acceptable to use an in-game level editor to modify a game level and play through that level and the others? Is that compatible with "warpless" and/or "no password"?

I doubt it, it's akin to playing a slightly different game or a romhack. I would like to see some of those 'construction kit' games used for TASes though, by creating an entire game and then TASing it. RPG Maker comes to mind. :)

One possibility would be to create our own romhack of some game, for the sole purpose of making it as difficult to TAS as possible. Bisqwit wrote some years ago tools to customize all the levels in Rockman. His original goal was just to make a different version of the game, playable normally, but they could well be used for this purpose. It could be one possibility.

I remember Excitebike, Wrecking Crew, Eggerland: Souzouhe no Tabidachi, and Fire 'n' Ice having in-game level editors. Maybe use them to show off lots of glitches that don't show up in the built-in levels? If you want to see a hard Rockman hack TAS'd, I'd say do the hard mode patch of Deus Ex Machina. It gets pretty ridiculous at times... :p
